Club legend attends match two weeks after minute's silence held for his death

Reuters02-04-2025

April 2 (Reuters) - Bulgarian side Arda Kardzhali invited club great Petko Ganchev and feted him at their first division match on Wednesday, two weeks after they held a minute's silence for their former player thinking he had died.
When Arda played Levski Sofia last month, players from both sides lined up at the centre circle to honour Ganchev.
But before the day was done, the club posted a message saying they had received "incorrect information about his death" and that the 78-year-old was very much alive.
On Wednesday, the club said their 'legend' was a special guest for their match against Cherno More, where the home side won 4-0. Ganchev also received a jersey with his name and the number nine.
"Before the match Petko Ganchev saw the sport director Ivaylo Petkov, who gave him a jubilee jersey... He watched the match in the company of other ARDA veterans," the club said.
"Once again we apologise to Petko Ganchev for the gaffe two weeks ago."
Ganchev said he received several phone calls when the club held a minute's silence while his wife was in tears when he got home late to watch the match.
"When I heard the terrible news, I poured myself a little brandy," he had told Bulgarian outlet Blitz.
"To bury you alive is very stressful. Truthfully, the situation was not pleasant."

Watch moment Scots golf ace Robert MacIntyre wins new fans with ‘pure class' gesture live on TV after US Open heartbreak

But you wouldn't know it from the look on his face - because it was all class. MacIntyre, 28, posted a round of 68 (-2) on the final day for the clubhouse lead as he kept his cool when others lost theirs during a wild day at the Pennsylvania venue. The course had been showing its teeth all week with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau all struggling to get to grips with it. A rain delay on Sunday made matters even more difficult but MacIntyre played some of the best golf of his life to put himself into contention for an improbable triumph - despite starting the round SEVEN shots off the lead. He clawed his way back and by the time he'd finished his round it was down to a duel between him and Spaun, as the challenges of Adam Scott, Sam Burns and Viktor Hovland wilted. With both players tied as Spaun reached the 17th, the recent PLAYERS Championship runner-up made a terrific birdie to go one shot ahead. That left MacIntyre anxiously waiting in the clubhouse in the hopes of a play-off. For that to happen Spaun would have had to bogey the 18th. Spaun nailed a drive into the fairway but his approach shot left him with a scary two-putt from 65 feet. A three-putt would have led to a play-off but Spaun HOLED the monster 65-footer to clinch the trophy in incredible style by two shots - and MacIntyre was one of the first to show his appreciation. Tearful JJ Spaun sinks monster putt on final hole as 120/1 underdog pips Robert MacIntyre to US Open crown at Oakmont Rather than sulk or be bitter about losing out on his first major, MacIntyre was caught live on TV in the clubhouse giving the American a huge round of applause. The Oban lefty looked speechless with a stunned look on his face before he said "Wow", and sincerely shrugged his shoulders as if to say 'What can you do?'. His classy act of sportsmanship was noticed by plenty of golf fans both at home and abroad, as Spaun burst onto tears on the green. The commentator on the US broadcast of the event said: "Pretty good sportsmanship there, Robert MacIntyre. 'Wow'." Fans on social media also praised the Scot for his reaction to the putt, taking into account the herculean effort he had put in to give himself a shot at glory. Not only would victory have broken MacIntyre's major duck, he would have been the first from his homeland to win the US Open in almost 100 years - and at the same course. Scots-born Tommy Armour won the 1927 US Open at Oakmont and indeed two years earlier (exactly 100 years ago) Willie Macfarlane won his only major title in the same tournament, beating the legendary Bobby Jones in a play-off. While it wasn't to be for MacIntyre, viewers loved his display of sportsmanship. One fan said: "A true sportsman and a gentleman. Robert MacIntyre epitomises golf at the highest level." Another said: "Pure class after a tough defeat." "Some boy. This shows class," came another comment. And a fourth said: "Mac put on a great show also, he held it together beautifully." One viewer went even further, saying: "I'd give the win to Robert MacIntyre for the absolute class he showed in the clubhouse. That display was the most impressive thing I've seen today." MacIntyre will rise from 20th to 12th in the world rankings and also jumps up to fourth in the European points list for the Ryder Cup. Not only that, he appears to have won himself a few more fans with his display over the weekend at Oakmont. US Open golf SUSPENDED due to dangerous conditions as players take cover and Oakmont course starts flooding "Robert MacIntyre, what a classy individual," said one viewer. "Robert MacIntyre is just a good guy man," said another. "I'm now a huge fan of MacIntyres," came a third comment. While this observer said: "He became a new favourite, class." A fifth said: "Class. Totally changed my opinion of the bloke." Other responses came in commending MacIntyre for showing Scotland in a good light. "What a man. Proud he is a Scot," said one Scottish fan. While this American fan said: "Them Scot's are damn good guys. Can't wait til my next boys trip abroad." Another supporter reckons MacIntyre is now primed for a good run at Royal Portrush in a few weeks' time when The Open comes to town. "Class act from the Champion Golf of the Year in a few weeks," came one response. MacIntyre himself followed up his classy gesture with words of congratulations for Spaun. The reigning Scottish Open champion said: "He won the golf tournament. "I mean, he's dreamed of it. I've dreamed of it. Everyone's dreamed of that moment. "For him to pour in the winning putt, there's nothing I can do. "Fair play.' 7 MacIntyre applauded Spaun for his efforts in victory 7 He could only say 'wow' as Spaun holed the 65-footer against the odds Credit: US OPEN 7 He was clearly stunned by the outcome but showed his class Credit: US OPEN 7 The Scot accepted defeat magnanimously Credit: US OPEN Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Tearful JJ Spaun sinks monster putt on final hole as 120/1 underdog pips Robert MacIntyre to US Open crown at Oakmont

Spaun had got off to a horror start on Sunday SPAUN WINNER Tearful JJ Spaun sinks monster putt on final hole as 120/1 underdog pips Robert MacIntyre to US Open crown at Oakmont ROBERT MACINTYRE suffered the same Oakmont heartbreak as boyhood hero Colin Montgomerie as JJ Spaun pushed him into second place at the US open. At the fearsome course where Montgomerie was edged out in a play-off by Ernie Els in 1994, MacIntyre looked like going one better after a brilliant closing round of 68 saw him take the clubhouse lead at one over par. 5 American JJ Spaun won the US Open at Oakmont after a thrilling final round Credit: Getty 5 Spaun sparked wild scenes on 18 as he holed the longest putt of the whole week to win the US Open Credit: Reuters 5 Spaun celebrated with his wife and kids after his incredible Major win Credit: Reuters 5 Spaun shared a kiss with proud wife Melody Credit: Getty Spaun, who was also on one over with two holes to play, was the only man with a realistic chance of denying the young Scot. And he produced a wonder shot at the driveable par four 17th, smashing a 309 yard drive to within 18 feet of the flag. The eagle putt rolled past the hole, but Spaun showed nerves of steel to sink his three footer for birdie, and claim the outright lead. The stocky American still needed to make at least a par at the ultra-tough 18th to avoid a play-off. Spaun left a putt for victory at Sawgrass hanging in the jaws of the final hole - and he was blown away by Rory McIlroy when they returned for a three hole shoot out the next day. He made absolutely sure that could not happen again by sinking a bomb from 65 FEET at the last for a two shot victory. At one under par he was the only man to finish in red figures. He hung tough after that, produced a fantastic finishing flourish, and the world No 25 is now a worthy Major champion. Eagle-eyed fans spot Rory McIlroy's 'unrepeatable' magic trick in furious fit of rage at US Open It was hard on MacIntyre, who was the only player in the final SIXTEEN groups on the course to break par on day four. His weekend rounds of 69-68 would have made him a worthy winner, if world No 25 Spaun had not shown such grit after a horror start saw him drop five shots in the first six holes. MacIntyre knew he could not have done any more. He commented: 'All I can say is that I'm absolutely delighted with the way I played today. 'I got off to a rough start with a couple of early bogeys, but sinking a sixty footer for eagle on the fourth showed you can never tell what is going to happen next here 'I could see no-one was getting away from me among the guys who started out in front of me, so I had to dig in, dig in, and dig in some more. I did that. I did my best.'
