There Was a Major WNBA Upset on Friday
There Was a Major WNBA Upset on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On Friday, the Connecticut Sun had a major 84-76 victory over the Atlanta Dream. Coming into the contest, the Sun had just secured one win in the 2025 WNBA season, which was against the Indiana Fever. That was followed by an embarrassing 100-52 loss against the New York Liberty. Advertisement The team regrouped during their five-day break and collected themselves for their match against the Dream. It was effective as it changed their approach against Atlanta. This snapped the Dream's four-game win streak. They had a longer break since their latest contest, which was on May 30. Unfortunately for Atlanta, the extended interval disrupted their flow. Connecticut Sun center Tina Charles and guard Bria Hartley celebrate with guard Marina Butler II-Imagn Images Ahead of the contest, the Dream was favored to win, according to Action Network. Atlanta had -10.5 odds to win the matchup. The Sun, however, performed better than expected and pulled off an upset. The Sun was led by veteran guard Marina Mabrey, who had 34 points in the win. Mabrey added four rebounds and four assists on 37.5% shooting from deep. In the first half, the 5-foot-11 guard showed signs that she'd have an outstanding game with 15 points. Advertisement Veteran star Tina Charles helped with 19 points and four rebounds on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. Late in the fourth quarter, rookie Saniya Rivers had an excellent defensive performance. She blocked Rhyne Howard's 3-point attempt to secure the victory. Rivers had two blocks to go with her three steals. The Sun's next game will be on Sunday against the Washington Mystics. Connecticut will look to add another win to its record as the Mystics are in the middle of a three-game losing streak. Fever star Caitlin Clark to miss at least 2 weeks with a left quad strain
One of the best and most exciting players in the WNBA is looking at a two-week absence at minimum. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark is expected to miss multiple weeks due to a left quad strain, the team announced Monday. The Fever released a brief statement announcing the news: "Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has suffered a left quadriceps strain and will be out a minimum of two weeks, the team announced today. Further updates will be provided, as available, following re-evaluation." Advertisement The team did not provide additional details, including when Clark sustained the injury. It's reportedly a new injury for Clark, who also dealt with a left quad strain in the preseason. Clark missed the team's preseason opener due to that injury before returning for the Fever's second preseason game. Clark played 37 minutes in the team's 90-88 loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday. She posted her usual numbers in the loss, scoring 18 points and dishing out 10 assists. 'I don't know when it happened,' Fever coach Stephanie White said, via the Indianapolis Star. 'I know [after the Liberty game] we got a message that something was going on with her leg and they were getting an MRI, and then we got the word.' Clark will miss at least four games while recovering from the injury. If she's available to play after exactly two weeks, Clark could be cleared to face the Atlanta Dream on June 10. That's the earliest possible timetable for Clark's return. She could miss additional time after being re-evaluated by the team. Advertisement After being selected by the Fever with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Clark established herself as a future superstar. She averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds in her first taste of the WNBA. That performance earned her the Rookie of the Year award, an All-Star appearance and a top-four finish in MVP voting. Clark was poised for even better things in her second season. Through four games, she was putting up similar numbers to her rookie year, averaging 19 points, 9.3 assists and 6 rebounds. 'When you think about Caitlin and her not wanting to miss games, she's obviously a competitor and wants to play, obviously everyone wants to watch her play, you know?' White said. 'But for me, it's maintaining perspective, right? It's making sure that we address this in a way that doesn't affect long term, that we take care of it. Don't over push, don't over exert, making sure that we take the long-game approach to this, so that we're not having lingering issues throughout the course of the season. Sometimes great players don't tell you when they're hurting. I'm glad that she did, because we need to nip this in the bud.' With Clark sidelined, the Fever will rely more heavily on Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell to carry a bigger scoring load. Boston ranks second on the team — behind Clark — with 18.5 points per game. Mitchell is third on the team with 17.8 points per game. The Fever (2-2) will play their first game without Clark on Wednesday, when they travel to take on the Washington Mystics.

Troubled WNBA Team Gets Bad News on Friday
Troubled WNBA Team Gets Bad News on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. WNBA fans have been treated to two games on the docket on Friday night. The Paige Bueckers-less Dallas Wings host the Los Angeles Sparks in a late 9:30 pm ET tip-off, which is preceded by a matchup between the Atlanta Dream and the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena. Advertisement In the first game of the evening, the Sun are looking to secure just their second win in what has been a troubling start to the season. Connecticut entered Friday's matchup against Brittney Griner and Co. with a 1-6 record and in dire need of a victory. Unfortunately for the Sun, they got some bad news in the first half of the game. This came in the form of starting center Olivia Nelson-Ododa suffering a concerning ankle injury. It was later revealed that the 24-year-old would not be able to return to the game due to the ankle issue. Connecticut Sun forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa (10) looks to shootMatt Krohn-Imagn Images The Sun have yet to provide the details of Nelson-Ododa's injury as well as whether she will be forced to miss time because of the same. However, the fact that the former UCOnn star was quickly ruled out from returning to Friday's game does not exactly bode well for her status moving forward. Advertisement Nelson-Ododa is not exactly a superstar, but she has been integral to the Sky's rotation this season. In seven starts prior to Friday night, the 6-foot-5 center has averaged 9.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in 24.1 minutes per game. Rookie Kariata Diaby got the nod to start the second half for Connecticut in Nelson-Odada's place, and this unwanted turn of events could mean more playing time for the undrafted rookie.
