Wyndham Clark Apologizes for Behavior During PGA Championship
It wasn't the best day on the golf course for one of the PGA's top athletes. The final round of the PGA Championship turned out to be a frustrating one for 2023 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark. At the 16th hole at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC, on May 18, the 31-year-old golfer wasn't playing his best. By the 16th hole, he had reached his limit. After another bad shot, Clark turned around and whipped his driver, launching it out of his hands. Advertisement The golf club broke through a wall behind the tee box with the head coming right off the shaft. Clark then tossed the broken driver off to the side in anger and left it there, narrowly missing one of the volunteers. The poor day of sportsmanship required an apology which he delivered via X on May 19. "I would like to sincerely apologize for my behavior on Hole 16. As professionals, we are expected to remain professional even when frustrated and I unfortunately let my emotions get the best of me," Clark wrote. "My actions were uncalled for and completely inappropriate, making it clear that I have things I need to work on. I hold myself to a high standard, trying to always play for something bigger than myself, and yesterday I fell short of those standards. For that, I am truly sorry. I promise to be better the way I handle my frustrations on the course going forward, and hope you all can forgive me in due time." Clark didn't want to hear input from fans, so he cut off access to his comments below the post. Several social media users went around that social media device by adding their thoughts in a repost. "Putting others at risk is very reckless," wrote one follower. Advertisement Another golf fan added, "I've smashed clubs and thrown clubs trust me we all have. One difference there are only 3 others around me not hundreds. Keep your emotions in check. Try not to harm someone." Clark finished the PGA Championship with a tie for 50th place at 4-over — another disappointing result for the athlete who has struggled with the sport since his 2023 U.S. Open win. He could also face punishment from the USGA for violating the Rules of Golf which require a specific "code of conduct" on the course.
