US Congressmen urge Marco Rubio to secure Imran Khan's release
Listen to article
US Congressmen Joe Wilson and August Pfluger have sent a joint letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging him to engage with Pakistan's military regime to secure the release of former prime minister Imran Khan.
The letter, dated February 25, stated that Khan's imprisonment, which began in August 2023, is the result of politically motivated charges. It refers to Khan's ouster in 2022 through a vote of no-confidence as a "suspension of democracy" in Pakistan, leading to strained ties between the two countries.
Wilson, a prominent member of the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committees and a close ally of US President Donald Trump, along with Pfluger, chair of the Republican Study Committee, expressed their concern about Khan's imprisonment and its implications for US-Pakistan relations.
In the letter, Wilson and Pfluger assert that Khan is widely beloved in Pakistan and that his release would mark the beginning of a new era in US-Pakistan relations based on shared values of freedom. They likened Khan's situation to that of Trump, suggesting that Khan, like Trump, is a victim of judicial abuse.
The congressmen also called on Rubio to work with Pakistan to restore democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and the fundamental guarantees of due process, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech in the country.
They stressed that Khan deserves to be treated like any other politician and should not be imprisoned for his political views.
Wilson had previously posted on his X account calling for Khan's release and shared a copy of the letter to Rubio, expressing hope that US-Pakistan relations could be strengthened through respect for freedom.
The letter concludes by stating that the strength of US-Pakistan relations hinges on the freedom of Imran Khan, with Wilson and Pfluger urging Rubio to act decisively.

PARTLY FACETIOUS: Why did FBR Chairman cancel usual press conference after budget speech?
'A universal rule prevails: lessons need not be learned if they go counter to a declared strategy.' 'I would have you know I do learn lessons - if my strategy is not working, I adjust….' 'I was not referring to a common person like you, but politicians.' 'OK but do the selected qualify as politicians?' 'Of course, once you jump into the cesspit, the cesspit owns you.' 'You haven't heard of any successful rescue missions that have extracted individuals from the cesspit?' 'Not in the cesspit of politics. Anyway, if you were referring to the Budget presented on Tuesday being the same o same o, then let me assure you that the numbers game was won even more conclusively this time, almost as conclusively as the West was won.' 'Pretty dated comment, isn't it.' 'I don't understand…' 'Today the West does not bring to mind cowboys but refers to a US- led alliance which we are wooing or trying to woo and…' 'China will have to change its immigration and investment laws and….' 'Shut up, the Finance Minister said that the FBR collected 390 billion rupees from enforcement measures and next fiscal year would bring in much more and…' 'So then, why did the FBR Chairman cancel the usual press conference after the budget speech?' 'He must have developed a medical condition, but nonetheless I would urge the Finance Minister to verify it as he then over-exposed himself by giving interviews on several channels. A word of advice: give interviews after the post budget press conference.' 'That's the politician's way - any opportunity for exposure even if it goes into the realm of over exposure must be seized with both…both…' 'Hands?' 'I would go a step further, seize the opportunity with all limbs. Anyway, when I said lessons are not learned by politicians I wasn't referring to the locals but to Western politicians. Ursula von der Leyen announced the eighteenth sanction package against Russia. Shouldn't someone ask her what she reckons the eighteenth would achieve if the first seventeen did not work? Russia's growth was over 4 percent in 2024 while that of all Europeans countries floundered…' 'The number 18 brings to mind the intent to levy a tax on the traders.' 'Or the attempt to actually cut government expenditure instead of relying on a lower discount rate to reduce outlay.' 'As I said, politicians never abandon a strategy no matter how many times it fails.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

US, China reach deal to ease export curbs
WASHINGTON/LONDON: A deal getting the fragile truce in the US-China trade war back on track is done, US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, after negotiators from Washington and Beijing agreed on a framework covering tariff rates. The deal also removes Chinese export restrictions on rare earth minerals and allows Chinese students access to American universities. Trump took to his social media platform to offer some of the first details to emerge from two days of marathon talks held in London that had, in the words of US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, put 'meat on the bones' of an agreement reached last month in Geneva to ease bilateral retaliatory tariffs that had reached crushing triple-digit levels. 'Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me,' Trump said on the Truth Social platform. 'Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China. Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!). We are getting a total of 55% tariffs, China is getting 10%.' A White House official said the 55% represents the sum of a baseline 10% 'reciprocal' tariff Trump has imposed on goods imported from nearly all US trading partners; 20% on all Chinese imports because of punitive measures Trump has imposed on China, Mexico and Canada associated with his accusation that the three facilitate the flow of the opioid fentanyl into the US; and finally pre-existing 25% levies on imports from China that were put in place during Trump's first term in the White House. Lutnick said the 55% rate for Chinese imports is now fixed and unalterable. Asked on Wednesday on CNBC if the tariff levels on China would not change, he said: 'You can definitely say that.' Still, many specifics of the deal and details for how it would be implemented remain unclear. China's commerce ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment and more information.

PCJCCI president expresses satisfaction over Economic Survey, federal budget
LAHORE: Nazir Hussain, President Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI), appreciated the government's launch of the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024–25 and Budget 2026, calling them strong indicators of Pakistan's commitment to economic stability, investment, and regional connectivity through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He emphasized that CPEC was playing a transformative role in building infrastructure, boosting trade, and creating job opportunities, especially through key projects in road, port, energy, and urban development. He added that the completion of several major infrastructure projects under CPEC, including the Multan-Sukkur and Hakla-D I Khan motorways, and the operationalization of the New Gwadar International Airport was already improving logistics, reducing travel time, and opening new trade corridors. Brig Mansoor Saeed Sheikh (retd), Senior Vice President PCJCCI particularly praised the progress in Gwadar, where the Gwadar Port and Free Zone have seen over $250 million in investment from the China Overseas Ports Holding Company Limited (COPHCL), enabling operations in logistics, manufacturing, fisheries, and finance. With generous incentives like a 23-year tax holiday, full foreign ownership, and one-window facilitation, Gwadar is rapidly becoming a strategic commercial hub for the region. Zafar Iqbal, Vice President PCJCCI said that Budget 2026 had also allocated significant funding under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for ongoing and new CPEC projects, including infrastructure development in Gwadar, land acquisition, and the second phase of the East Bay Expressway. He also highlighted achievements in social infrastructure, such as the completion of a 1.2 million-gallon-per-day desalination plant to address water scarcity in Gwadar, and progress in digital connectivity, including the completion of a cross-border optical fibre cable. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General further welcomed signs of macroeconomic stabilization, with inflation recorded at 4.6 percent and GDP growth at 2.7 percent in the outgoing fiscal year. These are positive signs for investor confidence. Chinese businesses are already showing renewed interest, and CPEC's next phase will focus on job creation, industrial development, and local empowerment. The PCJCCI reaffirmed its commitment to promoting bilateral trade, facilitating business partnerships, and supporting the government's development goals under CPEC and Budget 2026. 'CPEC is not just an economic corridor it's a symbol of long-term cooperation and shared prosperity. The foundation has been laid. Now it's time to build on it, together.'
