Benefits cheat mum ordered to repay £22k after Facebook posts exposed her

Benefits cheat Sara Morris has been ordered to repay thousands of pounds after exaggerating the extent of her MS and being exposed by her own Facebook posts
A benefits cheat mum has been ordered to repay more than £20,000 after she was exposed by Facebook posts. Sara Morris, 50, claimed the money while competing in scores of running events
The mum-of-three was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2005. However, she exaggerated the extent of her condition in 2020 and claimed Personal Independence Payment (PIP). She claimed she was unable to stand at her cooker or get out of a bath unassisted. She also claimed to be so anxious when she left the house and even a trip to the pharmacy to collect her medication left her in tears.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard she was paid £2,292.63 in PIP a month, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports. But she failed to mention to the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) that she was in fact a member of the Stone Master Marathoners and regularly ran 5km and 10km races. She was caught out by her own Facebook posts of her running.
Morris, of Walton Way, Stone, was overpaid £20,528.83 between October 20, 2020 and April 25, 2023. She pleaded guilty to dishonestly making a false statement to obtain a benefit and was jailed for eight months last July.
Now she has reappeared at the same court for a Proceeds of Crime hearing. Judge Graeme Smith was told Morris benefited from her criminality by £22,386.02. He ordered Morris to repay £22,386.02 within 28 days or serve nine months in prison in default.

The court heard investigators carried out surveillance on Morris from February 5 to February 20, 2023. Prosecutor Regan Walters said: "On February 5 she took part in a five-mile race and was seen running without assistance and showed no signs of balance problems. On February 11 she was seen running with the Stone Master Marathoners and showed no signs of discomfort."
The investigation uncovered that Morris competed in 73 races between May 2019 and December 2022. The defendant was interviewed on May 11, 2023 and she stated her MS had worsened and she was suffering from fatigue.

But she confirmed she had been a member of Stone Master Marathoners running club prior to making her claim. She added she filled in her PIP form on her worst day.
Paul Cliff, mitigating, said Morris was diagnosed with MS 19 years ago and the 'severity of its impact ebbs and flows to a degree'. Mr Cliff said: "But it is accepted by her that the application did not give the full picture. It crossed over into the realms of dishonesty."
He said Morris's marriage broke down in the spring of 2020. He said Morris did not enjoy a lavish lifestyle as a result of her fraudulent claim. Mr Cliff said: "She lost her home because of financial problems and was struggling to keep her head above water financially.
"The application did not give the full picture. She did say running was one of the ways she tried to manage her MS. She has found it difficult to come to terms with her dishonesty."
Morris must also pay a £187 surcharge.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office asking for help in locating missing Lake Charles, Louisiana, woman

July is supposed to be an exciting time for the Watley family, filled with birthdays and family celebrations. And everyone could count on one thing: Tameika Watley would never miss a family birthday. But last year, after the family didn't hear from Tameika on any of those summer birthdays, her younger sister Miranda Watley began to feel something was very wrong. 'She never missed holidays. She never missed birthdays,' Miranda told Dateline. Miranda's concern grew when she learned their mother hadn't heard from Tameika since June 5, 2024. 'So I'm like, 'Mama, something's not right,'' she said. At the time, Tameika was staying at her mother's house, but Miranda says it wasn't unusual for her to be gone for periods of time. Miranda called everyone she thought could have seen or talked to Tameika, looked in places she was known to frequent, and even went door-to-door asking people if they had seen her. But there was no sign of her. ' It's just like some type of feeling came over my body,' Miranda said. Miranda eventually decided it was time to bring in law enforcement. She went to the sheriff's office and reported Tameika missing on July 23, 2024. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office issued a press release on its Facebook page on August 6, 2024, which states they are 'looking for a 37 year old Lake Charles woman, Tameika S. Watley, who was reported missing to CPSO on July 23. During the initial investigation family members advised detectives the last time they spoke with Watley was on June 5, by phone.' The release noted that Tameika does not have a permanent address or a working cell phone and is 'known to frequent several areas in Lake Charles including See Street, Railroad Avenue, 12th Street and North Booker Street.' They asked for the public's help in locating Tameika. According to Miranda, after Tameika was reported missing, a friend told the family she had seen and spoken to her after June 5, which is when the family last heard from her. On June 25 the friend spotted Tameika on 12th Street and 9th Avenue in Lake Charles. The two spoke through the friend's car window. The friend didn't remember what Tameika was wearing, but she told the family she had a bag on her shoulder that looked like a beach bag. Dateline reached out to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office for an update on the investigation into Tameika's disappearance. Public Information Officer Kayla Vincent responded via email. 'Since the report was filed, detectives have conducted numerous interviews, initiated multiple searches, and used a variety of investigative methods and techniques to try and locate Watley. We have also coordinated with other law enforcement agencies regarding unidentified individuals to rule out any possible connections,' she wrote. 'At this time, we have found no evidence to indicate that foul play is involved, but we continue to follow up on any and all possible leads,' Vincent told Dateline. Miranda says that while she tries to maintain hope, she cannot escape the many rumors that she says swirl around the town about what happened to her sister. ' The rumors [are] bad,' she said. 'All I hear — I just hear that she's deceased. That's all I hear.' This has also been especially difficult for Tameika's six children, who are being raised by her two sisters. 'It affects them bad to know that their mom is missing,' Miranda said. ' It's been almost a year, come next month,' Miranda said, which means summer is around the corner, the time of year the Watleys used to fill with joy and family birthday celebrations. Until they bring Tameika home, it will be tinged with sorrow and heartache. Tameika is 5'4' and weighs 140-170 lbs. She has black hair and brown eyes. She has a tattoo on her chest that reads 'Derrick', one on her wrist that reads 'Anita', one on her left leg that reads 'Tayvia', one on her right leg that reads 'Ja'Quaylon', and two others on her upper back. If anyone sees Tameika or has any information on her whereabouts, please contact the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office at 337-491-3605 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 337-439-2222.

Scot cops insist ‘no intelligence' to link Spanish gang shooting to Scots turf war

SCOTTISH cops have said there is nothing to suggest the double assassination of two gangsters in a Spanish bar is linked to the gang war raging across Scotland. Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan were shot to death by a masked assassin in Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola on the Costa Del Sol. Advertisement There were fears the killings were an escalation in the underworld feud raging across Scotland. But cops have since revealed they believe it is not related. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police. "Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police where requested, however at this time we have no officers deployed within Spain. Advertisement "There is currently no intelligence to suggest the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge. "Any misinformation or speculation linking the events in Spain are not helpful to the ongoing investigations in either country. "There is also nothing to suggest that the shooting in Fuengirola was planned from within Scotland." More to follow...
