Osaka, March 1970. Japanese crowds rush to the opening of World Expo and Australia is on show. It's all bronzed surfers, bikini-clad blondes, sheep shearers and Driza-Bones, projected from 10 giant screens in the Australian pavilion. This footage opens Australia: An Unofficial History, a new three-part documentary starting on SBS on Wednesday night.
Such was the World Expo 70's success that Australia's Liberal government decided to recruit a team of film-makers with a tightly controlled remit: to create an official portrait of Australia on celluloid to sell across the globe. Agriculture, immigration, business, leisure, employment: the official footage that came out of the Commonwealth Film Unit showed a carefree, young, white – and invariably masculine, unless a bikini was required – nation.
It was also instructive. Through film, Australians were effectively told by the government who they were and what they stood for. All footage was carefully screened by government bureaucrats before release.
Australia: An Unofficial History, hosted by Jacki Weaver, is a three-part documentary that explores how Australians came to see their own lives reflected on the small and large screen and began hearing their own voices and stories in their living rooms and cinemas.
Seventies Australia witnessed the emergence of land rights, gay rights, feminism and organised resistance against governments who sent their young men to die in foreign conflicts. But it is only after viewing long-buried archival footage from the Commonwealth Film Unit – which became Film Australia in 1972 – that viewers come to understand just how drastically the nation changed in a decade.
At the same time, young baby boomers had begun co-opting their uni mates to make their own unofficial portraits of Australia. 'Film Australia was a little staid compared to the group that I'd been mixing with, who felt that film was for self expression,' says director Phillip Noyce in one of the documentary's interviews. '[Film] wasn't to teach anything. It was the opposite. It was to teach nothing. It was for sensation.
'I guess I sort of had a little bit of disdain for the people who were locked up out there in the madhouse of Film Australia,' he says.
While Australia's official film-makers were recreating a Menzian utopia, Noyce – now known for such films as Newsfront, Patriot Games, Rabbit-Proof Fence and Dead Calm – and his contemporaries were pushing the boundaries of a fledgling avant-garde art form.
While the Australian government was using the medium of film to woo a new wave of (white) immigrants in 1971, Noyce, as part of the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op – a collective of independent young film-makers – was covering the emerging hippy scene in Australia. His coverage of the 1971 Aquarius arts festival held (surprisingly) in Canberra resulted in his first major documentary, Good Afternoon, which suggested to the world that Australia had the perfect climate for growing a plant called can-aar-bus.
An uber-cool 21-year-old Noyce may have been doing the country's official film-makers a slight disservice, however. Former employees of the 1970s version of Film Australia interviewed in the documentary including Rod Freedman and Bruce Moir (the latter rose to become chief executive of the department) recall a workplace where security guards had yet to be invented.
When they bundied off at 5pm, the studios became a hive of unauthorised activity with employees experimenting with the medium by 'borrowing' then state-of-the-art government issued equipment. These public servants even found a way of getting around Canberra's bureaucrats, who had the final sign-off on all scripts: make a film without any dialogue.

Archival footage from the early 1970s shows a young Jacki Weaver relaxing dreamily on her sun-drenched breezy balcony, watching her male and female laundry engaged in a rapturous dance of courtship on the clothesline. Not a word is spoken. The government's official image of Australia was fracturing before its very eyes.
Then, in December 1972, everything changed. The ushering in of the Whitlam government transformed White Australia into Multicultural Australia. The government film unit's remit was drastically overhauled: no longer would they tell Australians what to think or how to behave. In reality, Australians weren't all beachgoers, they weren't all Anglo and they weren't all happy.
'I joined [the film unit] at the height of the Whitlam government, one year from its demise, but at the height of its revolutionary legislation,' Noyce tells the Guardian Australia. 'It was a time of tremendous rapid change in attitudes and the films that we made reflected that. They were made as discussion starters.'
The Mike Walsh Show became the 'Oprah of its day', he says, seeking to catch the zeitgeist – warts and all. Documentaries appeared, interviewing young migrant women resisting pressure to adopt the paternalistic ways of their parents. Young men confessed to feelings of loneliness and hopelessness. An Indigenous voice emerged as the microphone was handed to First Nations leaders such as Gary Foley who, in the SBS documentary, watches footage of himself being bashed unconscious by police at the tent embassy on the lawns of Old Parliament House in 1972.
Noyce's commission was to make 10-minute documentaries for high school students – 10 minutes being considered the average attention span of a teenager in 1973. One of those was a fly-on-the-wall documentary featuring 17- and 18-year-old urban boys preparing for a night out 'poofter bashing'. Noyce never expected to find himself filming in the back seat of a Holden sedan with boys cruising for prey.
Two years earlier, Dennis Altman, an Australian academic and gay rights activist, had shocked viewers when he appeared on the ABC's Monday Conference show – akin to today's Q&A – and proclaimed that the heterosexual nuclear family construct was not the only possible form of human happiness.
'I'm no longer going to lead the double life most homosexuals lead,' he says in the documentary. 'I'm no longer going to pretend that I am, in fact, straight. I'm going to be in public as I am in private, and people are going to have to accept me for what I am.'
Altman tells Guardian Australia that when he first left Melbourne for New York in the late 1960s, it was 'like that moment in The Wizard of Oz, where black and white becomes Technicolor'.
In 1975, four years after Altman's television appearance, South Australia became the first state or territory in Australia to decriminalise homosexual activity. It would take another two decades for the last Australian state, Tasmania, to follow suit in 1997.
'Everyone thinks of the time when they were young as the golden age,' Altman says. 'I suspect many people of my generation like to think that way. But I do think that it was certainly, in terms of sexual politics, a time of extraordinary change.'
At the close of the 1970s, such was the feeling of buoyancy within the gay community that even the possibility of same-sex marriage was no longer a fantastical thought. And then the 1980s were ushered in – and with it, the scourge of Aids.
When the Whitlam government was dismissed in 1975, the film-making community entered paralysis. 'We didn't know if there would be a tomorrow, if this would continue, because we knew the vagaries of politics meant that at any moment it could all be taken away,' Noyce recalls. 'So we had to make use of what we were given. We had to push the boundaries while we could.'
As it turned out, the Fraser government's focus was on Australia's economy, not monitoring the mores of its citizenship. But in just three years, the cultural and social floodgates had been opened too wide – it would never lock shut again.

Big Country released Why The Long Face 30 years ago with Stuart Adamson delivering a powerful anti-war and pro-Earth message. Big Country were revitalised in 1995. Why The Long Face was the follow-up to the critically acclaimed sixth studio album The Buffalo Skinners, which got to number 25 in March 1993. The album took three weeks to record. Adamson opened up about the unusual place he found inspiration in a forgotten interview in June 1995 that has been uncovered from the archives. 'I've always been a traditional folk song writer and I've had my material performed by many artists across a wide spectrum from ABBA to a bizarre Japanese beer commercial,' he said. 'Good things have happened to us with amazing regularity. 'I am hopeless at organisation. 'A lot of songwriters are. 'Lyrics come to you at the most bizarre times. 'I was out for a run in Lincolnshire, and all of a sudden I'd got this lyric. 'I ran back to the studio where we were recording and wrote the entire lyric for I'm Not Ashamed, which became the first single.' He described the album as 'modern day folk and country played on loud guitars'. 'I have been trying to write songs that are much more personal, again using contemporary folk as an influence in the writing,' said Adamson. 'It's more about people relating to each other than worldly events.' You Dreamer and I'm Not Ashamed were the first two singles. They were songs with anthemic chorus which also became live favourites. Charlotte, Send You and Wildland In My Heart were heartfelt ballads. Post Nuclear Talking Blues spread the anti-war message. Adamson, guitarist Bruce Watson, bassist Tony Butler and drummer Mark Brzezicki were still making sense in a changing musical landscape. Why The Long Face was released during the Britpop era when the radio was full of bands like Blur, Dodgy, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, Pulp and Supergrass. The hedonistic rock 'n' roll lifestyle that defined the Gallagher brothers held no attraction for Adamson, who said he preferred to get his kicks in the studio. 'I have seen any amount of burning out on gratuitous sex, wild parties and all that goes with that side of rock 'n' roll,' he said. 'But I've been in it for most of my life and not lived the lifestyle. 'It didn't interest me. 'I get my kicks out of the creative side and still love performing. 'I get my high out of writing a new song, recording it, playing it, and seeing that it gives people enjoyment.' The band went on a record store tour across the UK to promote the album. Adamson's biographer, Allan Glen, said this was an interesting period for the band and a real test of their resilience and commitment to making music. He said: With NME, Melody Maker and the radio saturated with Britpop, creative thinking was required to promote a country-flavoured introspective album heavy on the threat of nuclear war amid the loud, brash and life-affirming sounds of acts such as Oasis and Blur. 'Big Country still had an incredible reputation as a live band. 'The band's long-standing agent, John Giddings, was keen to take advantage of it. 'Strong sales of Why The Long Face in Germany coupled with the band's live reputation paid off when Giddings booked the band to play with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in Dublin and for nine dates as support to the Rolling Stones.' Big Country performed nine dates in Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands on the European leg of the Rolling Stones' Voodoo Lounge tour. They played in front of a combined audience of 800,000 people. Mick Jagger hailed Big Country as one of the Stones' best-ever opening acts. Bruce Watson returned the compliment when he said the Stones were the only band Big Country had supported that he wanted to watch every night. Not everything went to plan. Watson found himself locked up inside Colditz when the band were travelling from Leipzig to Berlin to open for the Stones at the Olympic Stadium. Big Country decided to investigate the castle 'high on yonder hill' that became infamous as a Second World War prisoner of war camp. Watson wandered into another part of the castle and got locked in a wine cellar. The only way out was through one of the ill-fated tunnels. He was later freed by a guard. The band returned to the UK. The Why The Long Face tour started in Norwich in September 1995 and included dates at the Rothes Hall in Glenrothes and Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow. Adamson led a Greenpeace march in Edinburgh before the Rothes Hall show and handed over a petition of 10,000 signatures to the French Consulate. He was protesting against nuclear tests by France in the South Pacific. Big Country dedicated their tour to Greenpeace and the tour programme included a leaflet urging people to 'stop nuclear tests' and donate to the charity. There was a Greenpeace stand at every concert to gather support. The band also released the EP Non, which featured the tracks Blue on a Green Planet and Post Nuclear Talking Blues with all proceeds going to Greenpeace. Big Country also provided pre-match entertainment to 40,000 fans at Hampden Park in November 1995 for the League Cup final between Aberdeen and Dundee. '1995 was another example of Big Country as a classic rock band with an innate ability to survive the vicissitudes of the ever-fickle music industry,' said Allan. 'It also set them up a few years later for arguably their finest single of the 1990s. 'Fragile Thing was the track that would have kick-started their career had someone not screwed up. 'On the night of its release, chart regulators CIN informed the band that the CD2 format and its jack-in-the-box style lid had one too many folds. 'It denied them a spot in the Top 40. 'Yet that compulsion throughout the '70s, '80s and '90s to make music, regardless of the external circumstances, was what made Stuart Adamson such a gifted – but often tortured – songwriter.'

The spectacular Nagaoka Fireworks Festival to be broadcast live in cinemas across Japan

Fireworks are an essential Japanese summer tradition, with pyrotechnic festivals held across the country from July to September. Among them, the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival in Niigata prefecture is considered one of Japan's top three. It's renowned not only for launching some of the largest shells and fireworks, but also for its grand finale, which spans an impressive two kilometres along the riverbank, making it one of the widest fireworks displays in the world. Now held annually on August 2 and 3, this roughly two-hour-long spectacle was first launched in 1946 to commemorate the lives lost in the World War II air raids the previous year. The festival's signature five-minute-long Reconstruction Phoenix Fireworks, synchronised with Ayaka Hirahara's song 'Jupiter', were introduced in 2005 and have since become an annual highlight. Serving as the emotional centrepiece of the event, the segment was created as a symbol of recovery for the Chuetsu area following the devastating 2004 Niigata Earthquake. Nagaoka is an immensely meaningful and symbolic fireworks display, and this year more so than ever – 2025 marks both the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 20th anniversary of the Reconstruction Phoenix Fireworks. With this in mind, the festival is expected to draw particularly large crowds. Attending in person requires careful planning. While there are both paid and free seating areas, the free spots are often claimed very early. So, to allow more people to experience and share in the significance of the event, the organisers are also hosting a live broadcast in cinemas across Japan. In Tokyo, you can catch the live screening of the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival at Shinjuku Piccadilly, Aeon Cinema Itabashi, Aeon Cinema Tama Center, Aeon Cinema Musashi Murayama and Aeon Cinema Hinode. In Osaka, Movix Sakai and Aeon Cinema Shijonawate will be participating in the event. Tickets are priced at ¥3,000 for general admission and ¥1,500 for high school students and younger children. The pre-reservation lottery is ongoing until July 21, with general sales commencing later from July 26 to July 31 – all online via Ticket Pia.
