Steven Gerrard fumes at Liverpool teammate during charity match as icon can't hide anger

Yahoo22-03-2025

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard failed to hide his frustrations with Jay Spearing as he fumed at his ex-teammate during a legends charity match.
The former Reds skipper was desperate to open his account on just ten minutes into the first half of the exhibition game versus Chelsea. Rolling back the years with lung-busting charge into the opposition box, the Kop hero looked to get on the end of a cross from Dirk Kuyt.
Spearing had found the former Netherlands stalwart on the right-wing after Gerrard had held up the ball on the half-way line. However, the Blues cleared the ball away from danger following Kuyt's searching lofted pass as the Reds academy coach failed to join the attack.

After this, Chelsea regained possession, with Spearing's efforts clearly having left Gerrard irked as the latter threw his arms up in the air in frustration as the attack broke down. The burst of anger from the ex-Aston Villa and Rangers manager left commentators Peter McDowall and Phil Thompson amused.
McDowall referred to Gerrard's outburst during the coverage, as he referred to the Reds legend giving Spearing what he called a "right talking too". This inspired chuckles from European Cup winner and former Liverpool assistant manager Thompson - who saw the funny side of the episode.
Gerrard was joined by former teammates including Peter Crouch, Sami Hyypia and Jerzy Dudek at Anfield in a game which was arranged to raise funds for the LFC Foundation. While those stars graced the Anfield turf once more, Sir Kenny Dalglish took charge of the Reds, alongside assistants Ian Rush, John Aldridge and John Barnes.
On the opposing side, legends including Claude Makelele, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Gianfranco Zola made the trip to Merseyside to take part. Prior to kick-off, ex Reds striker Crouch spoke of his excitement of returning to Anfield, as well as training at the new AXA Training Centre.
He also discussed the form of the current crop of Liverpool stars, as he gave his verdict on Arne Slot's first season in the managerial hotseat. As the Reds close in on a second Premier League title in five years, Crouch said: "Yeah I think it's been an unbelievably successful season. One week of football doesn't determine [anything].
'I think obviously it's not been a great week after Paris Saint-Germain. I think over the course of the two legs even the staunchest Liverpool fan would say they probably deserved it.
"I was at the Carabao Cup final and again it was just it wasn't the Liverpool we've seen this season, but I mean, if you go back to the start of the season and said you'd have a lead like this and you'd be out you have the competitions, every Liverpool fan will have bit your arm off.
'That's where they are now I think we need to take stock of that. After Jurgen left, the fact that Arne Slot has come in and done what he has done has just been a revelation. Everyone just needs to be a bit calm about it and look at it in the positive way it should be.'

Uriah Rennie, the Premier League's first Black referee, dies at 65

SHEFFIELD, England (AP) — Uriah Rennie, the first Black referee in the Premier League, has died. He was 65. 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former chair and trailblazing referee, Uriah Rennie," the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association posted Sunday on X. Advertisement 'Uriah made history as the Premier League's first Black referee, officiating over 300 top-flight matches between 1997 and 2008," the statement said. "He broke down barriers, shaped our football community and inspired generations to come." The Jamaica-born official grew up in Sheffield, northern England, and oversaw hundreds of matches starting with his breakthrough appointment when Derby hosted Wimbledon in August 1997. That game was abandoned, however, because the stadium lighting failed. Rennie told BBC News in April how, while on holiday in Turkey last year, he felt severe pain in his back and doctors discovered he had an inoperable neurological condition that confined him to a wheelchair. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Liverpool star now EXPECTS contract extension

One Liverpool star admits he expects a contract extension at Liverpool. The Reds have a free option to do so. Liverpool have dealt with complicated contract situations for over a year now. The entirety of last season was dominated off the pitch by Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all playing on expiring contracts. Advertisement Two of those situations were then resolved the way we all hoped - Salah and Van Dijk each signed two-year contracts to remain with Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, left the club for Real Madrid (although, technically, he was sold to them). This summer sees another couple of deals dominate. Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson are both on course to leave on free transfers in 2026. Liverpool certainly want to agree new terms for Konate, though it largely depends on wages. Robertson is a different matter - he's now past 30 and the club are actively hoping to replace him. However, they're not the only players entering the final year of their contracts. Alisson Becker is, too, but with a catch. Alisson Becker on his contract Alisson's contract technically expires in 2026. In fact, as things stand, he'll also leave on a free transfer. Advertisement Liverpool, though, did have an option in there to extend the deal by one year. Alisson expects them to do so, as he admitted in a press conference this week. "Now, I have one year left on my contract and another year [as an] option," said Alisson. "[Liverpool] will probably exercise that. "I think about what I have in my hands and doing my job well. It's a decisive moment in my career with a World Cup approaching. "I want to be focused and not planning to get in the way of that. I also have big goals with Liverpool." Liverpool would, of course, be absolutely mad not to extend Alisson's deal by another year. We believe he was the world's best goalkeeper last season and not someone who should be allowed to leave cheaply. The real question is whether he signs a new deal beyond that. Liverpool have already moved to replace him, with Giorgi Mamardashvili joining the squad this summer after signing a year ago.

(Video): Chelsea player fighting for his first team place shows impressive long ball skill

All the talk around Chelsea and their goalkeeper situation in the last week has been about one man – Mike Maignan. The Frenchman is pushing for a move to Stamford Bridge, and it seems like it's all about to come down to a final hectic 48 hours before the Club World Cup window closes. Petrovic signs off season with another great showing Djordje Petrovic playing for Chelsea. (Photo by) If we don't sign him, the shirt will be battled for between Robert Sanchez, who had it this season, and Djordje Petrovic, who had it the season before. The Serb has put himself in a strong position to come back to Chelsea and start after a brilliant season on loan at Strasbourg, and he helped his chances further with a great showing in the fiery Albania – Serbia game of Saturday night. Advertisement Petrovic made some great saves, some important high claims under immense pressure from the crowd in Tirana, and then saved a crucial penalty with a superb leap and strong right hand. You can see his highlights from the game in the clip embedded here: Petrovic happy to go long when situation calls for it One thing we note from this compilation is how often Petrovic is going long. Now this is nothing to do with him, of course, this is clearly what he's been told to do by his national team coach. It's hard enough for a club team manager to teach his team to play out from the back, one can only imagine how tricky it is for an international coach, Advertisement Still, we saw plenty of evidence from Strasbourg that Petrovic has levelled up that part of his game compared to when he was last at Chelsea. Impressively, he actually completed 11 of the 13 long balls he played in the game.
