Sony Music Publishing Acquires Hipgnosis Songs Group

Sony Music Publishing Acquires Hipgnosis Songs Group

Yahoo4 hours ago

Sony Music Publishing has acquired Recognition Music Group's publishing and administration company Hipgnosis Songs Group, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The acquisition comes five years after Recognition Music Group — which used to be known as Hipgnosis Songs Fund until the company rebranded three months ago — purchased music publisher Big Deal Music in 2020, rebranding that company as Hipgnosis Songs Group shortly after. Hipgnosis Songs has stakes in hits like Alex Warren's 'Ordinary,' and Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso' and 'Bed Chem' among others. The publishing company is the only asset Sony acquired from Recognition.

Recognition Music was originally founded by music executive Merck Mercuriadis, with Mercuriadis leaving last year after private equity company Blackstone purchased the company. Recognition had been a major driver in the music acquisition boom of the past six years, with the company buying up catalogs from superstars like Justin Bieber, Neil Young, Mark Ronson, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shakira among others. Those were not part of the Sony acquisition, and Recognition still owns those catalogs.
The news was first reported by Billboard.
In an email addressed to Hipgnosis's songwriters, composers and clients and obtained by THR, Sony said it was acquiring Hipgnosis Songs Group 'effective immediately,' and that 'over the next few months, we will be transitioning the company to SMP's services and systems.'
'With a unique roster of contemporary songwriters and timeless classics, HSG aligns with SMP's mission to elevate and support the work of the world's most impactful songwriters, and we are honored to represent you and your songs,' Sony wrote. As the transition begins, writers' royalty payments will continue to be administered through Hipgnosis for now, Sony said.
'We look forward to working with you in this next chapter,' Sony said.

'Harry Potter' actor stands by JK Rowling at Tony Awards amid criticism of transgender views

"Harry Potter" actor Tom Felton defended JK Rowling at Sunday night's Tony Awards after being asked about the fierce liberal backlash she's received for her views on gender and biology. The British actor was on the red carpet at the awards show Sunday, where he was interviewed by Variety about reprising his role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway play, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." The play, based off an original story co-authored by Rowling, takes place 19 years after the final "Harry Potter" novel. Felton was asked if the controversy surrounding Rowling's transgender views had affected his work at all, which he denied. Rowling has been a strong advocate for single-sex spaces for women and repeatedly been labeled as transphobic by far-left activists. "No, I can't say that it does. I'm not really that attuned to it," Felton said before praising the series' author. "The only thing I always remind myself is that I've been lucky enough to travel the world — here I am in New York — and I have not seen anything bring the world together more than 'Potter,'" Felton explained to Variety. "And she's responsible for that, so I'm incredibly grateful." Felton previously expressed his admiration for the author in a 2022 interview as she faced criticism from transgender activists for her views. "I am quick to remind myself and others that 'Potter' for some reason has brought more people together across the world and more generations than probably anything else has in the past 20 years, and I'm quick to celebrate that," he told The Times of London in a 2022 interview. "It came from one person, and that's her, so I'm very grateful." Rowling's hugely popular book series, which launched the hit film franchise which Felton starred in, has not lost its appeal with fans. Beyond the Broadway play, the series is also being adapted into an upcoming HBO television series. Felton shared his excitement at reprising his Potter role all these years later with his Broadway debut. "I think we all thought that the fandom flame might be doused over the years, but clearly it's not," he said. "The most exciting part is to do it live. It took nine months, more or less, to shoot a film, and this is all compact. This is all reimagined into a very loving, new type of story. And I get to be a dad, which is really fun."

Everything We Know So Far About HBO's Controversial New Harry Potter Series

HBO's forthcoming adaptation of the Harry Potter books has inspired discourse ever since it was first announced back in 2023—due in no small part to author and series producer J.K. Rowling's noted transphobia. But this spring, fans of the franchise recieved a few important casting updates. Arabella Stanton, Dominic McLaughlin, and Alastair Stout Photo: Courtesy of Aidan Monaghan/HBO In late May, it was announced that newcomer Dominic McLaughlin would take on the role of Harry Potter, while Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout would co-star as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron,' showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and episodic director Mark Mylod—both known for their work on Succession—said in a statement. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' John Lithgow Janet McTeer Paapa Essiedu Key members of the adult cast were announced back in April, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. On Monday, June 9, however, a whole new batch of actors joined the project, including Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge. The new series has been touted as 'a faithful adaptation' of Rowling's original material, and even amid the controversy surrounding it—what with Rowling apparently no longer on speaking terms with her original Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), or Hermione (Emma Watson)—it's hard not to root for these actors to have as successful (and normal!) an experience as possible, entering one of history's biggest young-adult franchises ever.
