HamCo prosecutors file to move charges to adult court for teen accused in Mason Alexander death
The Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office filed to transfer their case against the driver accused in 18-year-old Mason Alexander's death to adult court.
On March 1, 2025, Alexander was a passenger in a 2016 BMW 340 traveling south on Florida Road near 113th Street in Fishers. The BMW's 17-year-old driver tried to pass another vehicle just before the crest of a hill but spotted oncoming traffic, swerved to avoid a collision and veered off the road.
The BMW struck a tree and caught fire. Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities declined to comment on reports of an arrest last week, but on May 5 confirmed that a juvenile court petition alleges reckless homicide, reckless driving and false government identification.
Though Alexander's family confirmed the driver has turned 18 since the crash, Indiana law requires the case to begin in juvenile court. Under state statute, adult criminal courts only have automatic jurisdiction for minors charged with specific crimes, none of which are alleged in this case.
The prosecutor's office confirmed the teen is in custody as of May 5.
"As prosecutors, we are committed to seeking justice in a way that honors Mason's life and respects the seriousness of this tragedy," Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Kocher wrote.
The defendant's name will not be released unless the court agrees to move the case out of the juvenile system. The prosecutor's office did not immediately respond to a question about when the judge's ruling will be made.
Alexander's family has been vocal in their search for answers. On April 21, his family and friends rallied outside the sheriff's office holding signs demanding justice and accountability.
Alexander, a star football player, graduated early from Hamilton Southeastern High School to play as a cornerback for the University of Pittsburgh.

Accidents: Accident damages three parked vehicles
Jun. 4—No citations were issued Monday in a domino-effect accident involving four vehicles in Creston. According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 9:49 p.m. a 2008 Pontiac G6, driven by Jason A. Lohoff, 52, of Creston, was southbound on Elm Street when Lohoff says three people ran into the street and caused him to swerve. As Lohoff swerved, the Pontiac clipped the driver's side mirror of a 2021 Cadillac CT4, then struck a 2013 BMW 328XI, both legally parked on the west side of the street. The BMW was pushed forward causing it to hit a 2022 Hyundai Kona, parked in front of it. Damage to the Pontiac was estimated at $1,500; damage to the Cadillac was estimated at $300; damage to the BMW was estimated at $1,500 and damage to the Hyundai was estimated at $400. — — — — — No injuries were reported in a single-vehicle accident Tuesday in the Iowa State Savings Bank parking lot off of Taylor Street in Creston. According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 11:17 a.m. a 2023 Chrysler Voyager, driven by Ashely M. Hysell, 38, of Corydon, was exiting the parking lot when Hysell realized she had forgotten something. Hysell put the van in reverse and began backing up through the lot and struck a concrete pole. ‘Simple' traffic stop in Vallejo over high beam lights leads to fugitive's arrest
(KRON) — A BMW driving with its high beam lights on caught the attention of Vallejo Police Department patrol officers over the weekend, leading to an arrest for multiple firearm violations, according to authorities. The officers observed the silver BMW X5 on Saturday driving with its high beams activated, which police said is 'used as a common tactic for some drivers to conceal a malfunctioning headlight.' The car then allegedly made an illegal U-turn over double solid yellow lines before officers initiated a traffic stop for both violations. The woman who was found behind the wheel had a suspended driver's license for driving under the influence, VPD said. Her passenger, a San Pablo man, had a felony warrant out of Fairfield for possessing an illegal firearm. During a search of the man, officers said they found a fully loaded, unregistered firearm with a high-capacity magazine tucked into his waistband. The man was arrested and booked into the Solano County Jail for the felony warrant and multiple firearm violations. The driver was cited for driving on a suspended license and released at the scene. Her BMW was towed. 'This case is a testament to the fact that even a simple traffic stop can lead to the removal of illegal firearms from our streets,' Vallejo police said.
