Lawyer Tom Girardi sentenced to 87 months in prison for wire fraud

Reuters2 days ago

June 3 (Reuters) - Disbarred attorney Tom Girardi, whose pollution case against a California utility inspired an Oscar-winning film, was sentenced to more than seven years in prison on Tuesday for stealing $15 million in settlement funds from his clients.
U.S. District Judge Josephine Staton in Los Angeles sentenced Girardi to an 87-month prison term, fined him $35,000 and ordered him to pay more than $2.3 million in restitution, according to the Los Angeles U.S. attorney's office. A federal jury found Girardi guilty of four counts of wire fraud in August 2024.
Girardi turned 86 on Tuesday. He was admitted to the hospital last month due to liver dysfunction, and his lawyers have argued he suffers from dementia.
Staton sided with prosecutors who argued that Girardi should receive a significant sentence in prison. His lawyers had argued that Girardi would likely die in prison, and that he should have be confined to a medical facility for the rest of his life.
"This self-proclaimed 'champion of justice' was nothing more than a thief and a liar who conned his vulnerable clients out of the millions of dollars," Los Angeles U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in a statement.
Girardi, whose lawsuit against Pacific Gas and Electric inspired the 2000 film "Erin Brockovich," was accused of deceiving his clients and pilfering from settlement funds they had obtained in personal injury cases.
A federal judge in Chicago last month dismissed separate criminal charges there against Girardi, after prosecutors sought their dismissal in light of the pending California sentencing. Those charges stemmed from Girardi's alleged misappropriation of more than $3 million in client funds owed to families of the victims of the Boeing 737 MAX Lion Air Flight 610 crash in 2018.
At trial in the California case, Girardi blamed the fraud on Christopher Kamon, the former chief financial officer of their law firm Girardi Keese.
Girardi's lawyers also argued that he suffers from dementia and should not be prosecuted. Staton ruled last year that Girardi was competent to stand trial.
Kamon pleaded guilty to counts of wire fraud and was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison in the California case. He is set to plead guilty to parallel charges in Chicago federal court next month.
Federal prosecutors said they still plan to go to trial in Chicago against David Lira, Girardi's son-in-law, on July 14. Lira has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud, criminal contempt, and making false statements to a judge in connection with the Lion Air case.
Girardi was once a leading figure in the U.S. plaintiffs bar. He is the estranged husband of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Erika Jayne Girardi.

NFL star wide receiver Rashod Bateman signs new $37m, three-year contract

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman has signed a new three-year, $37million contract with the team through the end of the 2027 season. Bateman has spent his entire professional career with the Ravens after being the team's first-round draft pick in 2021. This is Bateman's third NFL contract after a rookie deal and an extension last offseason. Last year, Bateman signed a $15million extension over three years, with Baltimore nearly giving the wideout that value each season through 2027. Bateman's 2024 speaks in large to his uptick in value with 756 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Before the start of last season, Bateman only had four career NFL touchdowns. Bateman will slot into the Ravens' starting lineup as one of the top trio of wide receivers alongside Zay Flowers and DeAndre Hopkins. The Ravens' backfield of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry should provide plenty of opportunities for wide receivers, even with the guaranteed touches two of the best players in the NFL will get every week from John Harbaugh. Bateman was also effective in the postseason last year, scoring two touchdowns before Baltimore's divisional-round exit against the Buffalo Bills. Heading into 2025, the Ravens look to be ready for another run at a Super Bowl, as is the case when one of the best quarterbacks in the league is under center. Bateman now will be integral to those efforts for years to come.

BREAKING NEWS Trump says he'll visit China with Melania after 'very good' phone call with Xi Jinping to work out trade deal

President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday that he had spoken by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid trade uncertainty. China 's state-run news agency Xinhua was first to report the talks, saying the talks came at Trump's request. Trump posted to Truth Social mid-morning Thursday saying he had a 'very good phone call' with Xi. He also said that Xi invited the U.S. president and first lady Melania Trump to visit Beijing, while Trump reciprocated the offer, inviting Xi to Washington, D.C. 'As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing,' Trump said. The president said they discussed 'some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal.' 'The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries,' the U.S. president said. 'There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products,' he added. In April China had suspended exporting a wide range of critical minerals and magnets needed by automakers, military contractors and computer chip manufacturers globally. Trump said the American and Chinese teams will be meeting shortly. 'We will be represented by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer,' Trump said. Trump acknowledged that the 'conversation was focused almost entirely on TRADE.' 'Nothing was discussed concerning Russia/Ukraine, or Iran,' he said. The president said he would alert the media soon about the timing and location of the U.S.-China meeting. 'Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Trump said, signing off. Trump's tone in the post was much different than when he vented his frustrations about Xi in the early hours of Wednesday. 'I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!' Trump posted to Truth Social at 2:17 a.m. In mid-May the U.S. and China paused the escalating trade war for 90 days, with the U.S. reducing tariffs on Chinese imports from 145 percent to 30 percent. In turn, Beijing reduced tariffs on U.S. imports from 125 percent to 10 percent. Since then, both sides have acused the other of violating those terms.

Mom of three sisters 'suffocated by their dad in the woods' breaks silence - as ex-commando remains on the run

A mother whose three daughters were allegedly suffocated to death by their father has broken her silence as her Army veteran ex-husband remains of the run. Whitney Decker believes 'something broke inside' of her ex-husband Travis Decker and that he 'would not have done what he did if he was himself', her attorney revealed in a heartbreaking statement early Thursday morning. 'He clearly had some sort of break and everything that he had been living with, everything that had been bottled up inside of him for so long as far as trauma, just won out,' Whitney's attorney Arianna Cozart told the Seattle Times. Travis is wanted on suspicion of murder of his daughters Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia, five, in Wenatchee, Washington State. He remains at-large and is considered dangerous, given his extensive military training and propensity for violence.
