Veterans project reviving partnership with Rangers FC
The initiative, Glasgow Veterans United (GVU), is a football and social programme aimed at the city's veteran community.
The project is a collaboration between Glasgow's Helping Heroes (GHH), a partnership between Glasgow City Council and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, and the Rangers Charity Foundation.

GVU previously operated as a football team, but its format excluded many fans of the game who couldn't play at full speed.
Now, the initiative will take the form of walking football, in order to be accessible to veterans of all ages and abilities.
Elsa Geeraedts, project and office coordinator at GHH, said: "We're excited to get started and bring Glasgow Veterans United back to the community.
"It's been a popular programme in the past, and we are excited to be able to bring football to veterans of all ages, genders, and skill levels.
"With GVU, we want to attract an audience that wouldn't be comfortable asking for help in any other setting.
"We want this to be an inclusive and open environment, where people can open up about any issues they're battling."
The sessions will be held at the Ibrox Community Centre on Tuesdays from 11am to 1pm during term time, just across the street from the home of Rangers FC.

The first hour will focus on warmups and a friendly walking football match, led by Rangers Community Coaches.
Following this, the second hour will allow people an opportunity to socialise over teas and coffees, and to connect with the GHH team.

Strathaven pupil scoops top prize in national sport science poster competition
Strathaven Academy pupil Ross Munro was the winner of the national competition consisting of 32 Outreach Hubs across the UK. A star pupil from South Lanarkshire has taken the top prize in a national poster competition, illustrating how sport and exercise science research is helping to improve health and sport performance. A thought-provoking initiative delivered by The Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) and the Division of Sport, Exercise and Health at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) saw students, who are studying sport and exercise science-related subjects, from over 100 schools and colleges take part in various activities through CASES Outreach Hubs. Fifth-year Strathaven Academy pupil Ross Munro, whose winning poster competition entry wowed judges, attended a CASES Outreach Day of Sport Science activities at University of West Scotland Lanarkshire campus in November 2024. Along with 120 pupils from schools across Lanarkshire, Ross learned about supporting athletes. Activities including learning about athletes training in extreme environments, how talent is identified and developed, and how to promote inclusion for athletes with disabilities. Pupils then designed a poster summarising their learning on any of the topics. Ross was the winner put forward from UWS, who had his poster entered into the national competition consisting of 32 Outreach Hubs across the UK. Prof John Dickinson PhD, FCASES, CASES Accredited Applied Sport Scientist is chair of the CASES Outreach Panel. He said: "This year we have seen a significant expansion with over 30 CASES Outreach Hubs engaging with over 100 schools and colleges. 'We had a significant number of high-quality posters submitted. We are delighted with the winning poster that Ross submitted to the CASES School and College poster competition. The judges were particularly impressed with use of data at the start that added depth to the content, clear take home messages, and overall poster design.' By winning the overall UK-wide competition, Ross has the opportunity for his school to receive a visit from a high-performance athlete. As Ross is a keen runner, he has asked for a Scottish middle-distance runner to attend his school. Dr Hayley McEwan and Dr Mia Burleigh from UWS who lead the Outreach Hub will work on engaging an athlete and supporting an event for the school to celebrate the success. Ross says would like runners from his local community to be involved as he also volunteers at his Junior Park Run. Raith Rovers announced on Tuesday, June 10, that they had three friendlies lined up before kicking off their Premier Sports Cup campaign next month. Just two days later, though, Rovers have had to rejig their preparations following advice from authorities. The first scheduled tie against Stirling Albion has been scrapped due to road closures in Kirkcaldy for the planned march. The club confirmed they were advised by Police Scotland and Fife Council that they could not play the home fixture. Formed in 1872, they are of Scotland's oldest senior clubs and their storied history includes two league championships (one shared with Rangers) and a Scottish Cup win. The Sons won the old First, Second and Third Division titles and as recently as last year they won promotion to League One via the play-offs. But they were plunged into administration in November, which saw them docked 15 points and they were relegated back to League Two. Manager Stevie Farrell has been in post since 2021 but his future could too now be up in the air. Advertisement The club was bought over by Canadian businessman Mario Lapointe and there was hope they would exit administration via a creditors voluntary agreement. However, with the new season just a month away (Premier Sports Cup fixtures start on July 12) there were fears a deal wouldn't be reached in adequate time, A progress report by administrators Quantuma, first seen by The Herald, has now confirmed that the club will be dissolved and replaced by a new company. It will be called Dumbarton Football Club 1872 Ltd, and is wholly owned by Lapointe. Advertisement Rangers went through a similar process in 2012, with the club going into administration and then the company being dissolved. A statement, first reported by The Herald, said: 'The proposed exit route (from administration) is now dissolution. 'A funding requirement of circa £140,000 was highlighted for the team to complete the season. This funding requirement increases to c. £200k when carried through to the end of June 2025.
