Lifeboatman steps down after 20 years
A Plymouth-based volunteer is stepping down from the RNLI after 20 years.
Richard Gibson joined Plymouth Lifeboat Station in 2004, aged 29, and said it "was one of the best decisions" he ever made.
Mr Gibson who volunteered on 19 out of 21 Christmas days, served as a helm on the inshore lifeboat (ILB), a navigator on the all-weather lifeboat, and as senior ILB helm.
"Life-boating has been a massive part of my life, and not just mine, but my family's too," he said.
"I've spent time on the crew in my 20s, 30s, 40s, and into my 50s, and it's hard to put into words what it has meant to me," he said.
He said he had attended "hundreds of shouts", adding "one that stands out was the recovery of a family with a baby cut off by the tide in Wembury Bay".
"Over the years, I've made lifelong friends, some of whom I've stood beside in the toughest conditions," he said.
"I've had the privilege of being part of a crew that's more like a family, and I even met my wife through the social side of the station.
"I've shared in the joy of successful rescues, and I've experienced some of the more difficult sides of the job too.
"It's been emotional, exciting, humbling and unforgettable."
Lifeboat operations manager, Nigel Gray, said Mr Gibson had been an "integral" part of the station.
"He can now look forward to a well-deserved retirement to spend time with his family without interruption from the pager," Mr Gray said.
"I'd like to say a huge thank you from us all at Plymouth RNLI and wish him a long and happy retirement."
The RNLI said Mr Gibson was invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party to mark his 20 years of volunteering.
The Lord Mayor of Plymouth also presented him with coronation and long service medals, honours he said he would always treasure.

Search for missing yacht skipper called off
The search for a missing skipper of a yacht which was found on the Cornish coast has ended with no-one being found. HM Coastguard said it was called to Chapel Point, between Portmellon and Gorran Haven, at about 20:15 BST on Friday after the boat had been discovered run aground. It said Mevagissey Coastguard Rescue Team, a Coastguard search and rescue helicopter, a Coastguard fixed-wing aircraft, RNLI lifeboats and Devon and Cornwall Police conducted a large search of the area. A Coastguard spokesperson confirmed on Sunday that the search had been called off and no-one had been found. The BBC understands the yacht had travelled from Roscoff and UK Border Force officers were also called out to the scene. Images shared by Mevagissey Coastguard on Facebook included a map showing rescue teams went miles out from the coast during the operation. Oswego trustees examine results of community survey
Oswego trustees recently reviewed results of a community survey conducted last winter. The survey process is intended to gather information to improve municipal services and help guide long-range planning as well as respond to the needs of the community, officials said. This is the fourth survey administered for Oswego by ETC Institute. Previous surveys in the village were done in 2023, 2018 and 2016, according to Oswego officials. The Kansas-based ETC Institute is a marketing research firm that specializes in community surveys for government entities. The survey was mailed to a random sample of households within the municipal border of the village. Residents could either return their survey by mail or complete one online. The survey generated 606 responses, ETC Institute Director of Community Research Jason Morado said. The primary goal of the survey was to get an objective assessment of how satisfied residents are with village services and what they view as the top priority of the community. The analysis can compare Oswego with other communities across the country as well, the consultant said. 'We found residents have a very positive perception of the village – 88% of respondents rated Oswego as an excellent place to raise children and 87% rated Oswego as an excellent place to live,' Morado said. 'We also found the village is moving in the right direction. Satisfaction ratings have increased in 68 of 113 areas since your last survey two years ago in 2023,' Morado said. Compared to survey results in 2018, the satisfaction ratings increased in 71 out of 113 areas since 2018. 'We have seen an overall increase in satisfaction both short-term and long-term,' he said. Satisfaction concerning village services is higher than in other communities as well, Morado said. The village is above the national average in 55 out of 60 areas, Morado said. Satisfaction with the overall quality of village services is 20% above the U.S. average, he said. One of the areas Oswego rated the furthest above the national average was customer service from village employees. The ratings were 39% above the national average, he said. The overall quality of police and fire district services, local ambulance service, library services and feelings of safety in the village were among the areas that received high ratings. Areas of new development in the village, availability of affordable housing, job availability and transportation options received low ratings on a scale of one to five, Morado said. Overall flow of traffic and congestion management received low satisfaction ratings. 'This is typical for a fast-growing community,' Morado said. While the survey shows high ratings for overall municipal services, Village President Ryan Kauffman acknowledged traffic improvements remain on Village Hall's radar. 'We do have our work cut out for us because traffic is a problem – we know that and see that. Residents reach out to us about traffic all of the time,' Kauffman said. For a community as rapidly growing as Oswego, traffic will continue to be an issue, however, strides have been made, officials said. One of the primary solutions is the widening of Wolfs Crossing to five lanes, he said. 'That will decrease some of the burden on Route 34,' he said. 'Our message to the community is that we hear you and we are working on it.'

RNLI volunteer recognised in King's Honours list
A dedicated volunteer has been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours. Nick Hayward, from Lymington in Hampshire, has been honoured with a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of 44 years of unwavering commitment to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Aged 18 when he joined the Lymington lifeboat crew in 1981, he was appointed helm (in command of the boat) three years later. "When the [honours] letter arrived from the Cabinet Office, I had to read it several times before it sank in. I'm still reading it to make sure it's correct," he said. Mr Hayward added: "I don't think I could have been more elated and humbled at the same time. "It would not have been possible without my family, friends and all at Lymington Lifeboat Station who have supported me over the last 44 years. "Being part of the RNLI family is a privilege." Throughout his time with the RNLI, Mr Hayward has trained many other members of the crew. In 1995, he took on the role of station mechanic, ensuring the lifeboat, launch vehicle and equipment were maintained to the highest possible standard and ready at a moment's notice. In 2011, he also became a deputy launch authority, providing a critical link between the Coastguard and lifeboat. Steve Billett, Lymington's lifeboat chairman, said: "What Nick has - and continues to achieve - is a shining example of what volunteering and commitment to the community really means." RNLI chief executive Peter Sparkes said: "I am so pleased to see this national recognition right across the RNLI, from the frontline delivery of our lifesaving services to our shops and fundraising groups."
