Police make 180 arrests in knife crime crackdown
Officers made 180 arrests and seized 30 bladed weapons during a week-long knife crime crackdown in West Yorkshire.
West Yorkshire Police conducted 55 "knife sweeps" in parks, fields and in urban centres in search of weapons as part of the national Sceptre initiative.
High visibility patrols were also deployed in 66 knife crime hotspots in the county, with police visiting 43 schools to carry out awareness campaigns.
A force spokesperson said the initiative was part of its "longer term work to dissuade young people from carrying knives in the first place".
During the seven days of targeted action, weapons including knives and a sword were uncovered after a search of an address in Batley.
Other avenues included visits to retailers to test if they were willing to sell knives to children.
One shop in Calderdale was found to be selling blades without carrying out age checks.
Ch Supt Lee Berry, of the West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Partnership, said: "I hope residents have been reassured by all of the highly visible action which has taken place in our communities.
"Anyone who has information about persons carrying knives or the illegal sale of them is urged to contact either their local neighbourhood policing team or the independent Crimestoppers charity."
Alison Lowe, West Yorkshire's deputy mayor for policing and crime, said: "This is a vital part of our collective ambitions on knife crime here in West Yorkshire.
"This dedicated awareness week offers just a window into the ongoing partnership work taking place, day in day out, to keep our communities safe."

‘I'm not going anywhere': Baton Rouge man survives shooting while improving his community
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — One man is recovering from his injuries after someone shot him in broad daylight. Robert McKey was renovating a home for the Mid-City Redevelopment Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Mid-City. But he didn't think his passion for the community would land him in the hospital. 'I'm not going anywhere. I got shot in the face and spit out a bullet, nothing is going to take me from you,' said Robert McKey to his mother. On May 14, McKey was fixing a fence with his stepdad and friend on North 24th Street in Baton Rouge. 'It was a completely senseless act of violence,' said McKey. McKey said he was only trying to better his community that day, but the unthinkable happened while he was working. McKey said two men approached them, and one was wearing a mask. They reportedly asked McKey for cash, but he said he didn't have any. Yet, McKey moved and tried to grab the gun from the man. 'He emptied the clip when I was wrestling back and forth and whenever they ran out of bullets, the next thing I knew it felt like my head was a pinball machine. I was like, 'Did I just spit out a bullet?' I was like no way; there's no way like be real. I walked inside and my stepdad is trying to call 911,' said McKey. Bullets also hit his forearm, chest, neck, abdomen, and more. McKey's friend was also hit, and his stepdad was grazed. 'After they ran out of bullets they took off running, they weren't at all expecting me to do what I did, and they left in fear,' said Mckey. McKey is now out of the hospital, but the road to recovery will be a long one. 'They didn't take anything from us. They took my ability to build that fence, which I love, my job, and they took my ability to teach all these youth. They took that from them,' said McKey. McKey said he would go back to mentoring young kids in the area. The incident will not stop him from making Mid-City a better place to live. 'I am going back, I am definitely going back,' said McKey. Man identified after deadly shooting on playground in the Bronx
SOUTH BRONX, The Bronx (PIX11) — A man has been identified after he was fatally shot on a playground in the Bronx on Friday, according to police. Authorities say Irvin Provitt, 21, was killed just after noon on Friday in Crotona Park near East 173 Street. More Crime News Emergency teams found the 21-year-old with a gunshot wound to the head and pronounced him dead at the scene, officials report. Police say they're looking for two people who were seen running away from the park after the incident. Three men arrested and two injured in fight
Three men have been arrested after two others were injured during a fight in Sutton Bridge on Friday evening, Lincolnshire police said. The force said it was called just after 19:50 BST to reports of a fight on Bridge Road near the Curlew Centre, which then spread near to New Road. A man in his 20's was taken to hospital with injuries caused by a knife. Police said his condition was not believed to be life threatening. Three men, aged 20, 28 and 37, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remain in custody. Ch Insp Richard Nethercott said: "I think the local community will be concerned when they hear the details of the incident last night. "I can reassure people that we have those involved in custody and our officers will be speaking to them over the course of the day and maybe longer." The force appealed for any witnesses to the incident to get in touch.
