Ligeti: Violin and Piano Concertos, etc album review – As always, Faust's performance is perceptive and immaculate
The huge stylistic shift that György Ligeti's music underwent in the late 1970s and early 1980s was one of the most remarkable and unexpected changes of direction of any composer, perhaps only comparable with Stravinsky's shift into neoclassicism in the 1920s and his adoption of serial techniques in the 1950s. The language that Ligeti invented for himself, which invested tonality with a whole new set of relationships and incorporated elements from a variety of non-western musical traditions, was unveiled in his Horn Trio of 1982, but it was in the two major concertos that followed, for piano in 1988 and violin in 1993, that the full power of his new language was revealed.
Both are remarkable works, which seem utterly fresh and original, yet identifiably remain part of the concerto tradition. It's no surprise that the violin concerto particularly has been taken up by a number of soloists, or that Isabelle Faust should have wanted to add her reading to the series she has made for Harmonia Mundi. It is a typical Faust performance, perceptive, technically immaculate, and just a little on the cool side, and it's paired with an equally accomplished, if a little more mechanical, account of the piano work with Jean-Frédéric Neuburger as soloist. Neuburger also includes Ligeti's early, Bartókian Concert Românesc, while Faust leads performances of two of György Kurtág's Aus der Ferne sequence, as exquisite interludes.

On the boards the girls see descriptions for this year's boys: Ben, Dejon, Harry, Conor, Blu and Tommy. And in a huge twist - the girls have to decide who they'd like to couple up with based on these key stats with the boys' name, age, job and a headline. Quotes such as 'I like to play hard and work harder! I love to play, so I work very hard' are also given to help them decide who to pick. The girls then have a moment to discuss the profiles and try to work out who might be right for them. Then Maya counts to three and they must run to a heart, with only one girl allowed to stand by each heart. With only seconds to make a decision, will they all get the boy they wanted? 'Day of the Jackal' author Frederick Forsyth dies at 86
Frederick Forsyth, the British author of 'The Day of the Jackal" and other bestselling thrillers, has died after a brief illness, his literary agent said Monday. He was 86. Jonathan Lloyd, his agent, said Forsyth died at home early Monday surrounded by his family. 'We mourn the passing of one of the world's greatest thriller writers," Lloyd said. Forsyth served as a Royal Air Force pilot before becoming a foreign correspondent and a novelist. In 2015, he told the BBC that he had also worked for the British intelligence agency MI6 for many years, starting from when he covered a civil war in Nigeria in the 1960s. 'The Day of the Jackal,' published in 1971, propelled him into global fame. The political thriller about a professional assassin was made into a film in 1973 and more recently a television series starring Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch. He wrote more than 25 books including 'The Afghan,' 'The Kill List,' 'The Dogs of War" and 'The Fist of God" that have sold over 75 million copies, Lloyd said. His publisher, Bill Scott-Kerr, said that 'Revenge of Odessa,' a sequel to the 1974 book 'The Odessa File" that Forsyth worked on with fellow thriller author Tony Kent, will be published in August.

Love Island fans ‘work out' who gets sent home in savage twist after spotting clue from US bombshell Toni
LOVE Island fans are convinced they have already worked out who will get sent home in the first twist of the series. The Sun told earlier today how one girl has got the boot after bombshell Antonia Laites - who will be known as Toni - strutted into the villa. 4 4 And excited viewers think whoever is coupled up wit h Ben will be sent packing after Antonia revealed her celeb crushes. Before entering the villa, Toni explained that she had soft spot for Bradley Cooper and Kim Kardashian 's ex Odell Beckham Jr. Discussing who she might go for, one person speculated: 'I would say whoever is coupled up with Ben or maybe Connor is probably in trouble no girls were interested in sam last year when he got dumped , possibly the girl who gets dumped has no boys interested in her as it makes no sense dumping a girl who is popular with the boys.' A second said: 'I feel like the bombshell would go for ben or blu so i fear it might be Shakira , meg or helena.' While a third added: 'Shakira is going home. I think she picks Ben and then Toni picks Ben dumping Shakira. Put it this way if it is her she better be coming back.' Tonight's episode is set to start with a bang as Maya makes a huge announcement shortly after the girls arrive. She tells them: 'This year things are slightly different. You've told me what your type on paper is, but does that match your ideal man in reality? Come and join me by the pool.' As the girls line up, Maya explains: 'Girls, in front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts - shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?' On the boards the girls see descriptions for this year's boys: Ben, Dejon, Harry, Conor, Blu and Tommy. Love Island shock as girl is dumped from show in most brutal launch twist EVER After discussing the profiles and trying to work out who might be right for them, Maya counts to three and they must run to a heart, with only one girl allowed to stand by each heart. Once the boys arrive and meet their match, it doesn't take long until they get another surprise. Maya makes a shock return to the Villa with some huge news - someone new is already on their way. 4 4 Suddenly, the series' first bombshell Toni makes a dramatic entrance into the Villa. The Islanders are quick to realise she's come all the way from the US as Toni teasingly says: 'Good evening UK! Surprise!'
