Panthers' watershed win comes at a cost

Panthers' watershed win comes at a cost

Yahoo5 hours ago

Penrith's best win of the NRL season has come at a cost with Scott Sorensen handed a two-game suspension for the tackle that injured Warriors winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.
Second-rower Sorensen was not penalised on-field for his hip-drop style shot from the first half of Penrith's 28-18 win in Auckland.
The tackle left Watene-Zelezniak with a syndesmosis injury, with the Panthers scoring their second try while the winger was hobbling in backplay and unable to defend in position.
Watene-Zelezniak then watched from the dressing sheds as his former side waged a huge upset without their five NSW stars.
On Sunday morning, the match review committee handed four-time premiership winner Sorensen a grade-two dangerous contact charge for his tackle.
It means Sorensen will sit out of next week's match against ladder leaders Canterbury and the rivalry clash with Parramatta by accepting an early guilty plea.
If he unsuccessfully disputes his charge, Sorensen will miss a further match against South Sydney.
But a challenge appears unlikely given the 32-year-old has already lost one judiciary hearing this season.
Sorensen also received a grade-one careless high tackle charge for a shot on Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad but can accept a $1800 fine.
The defeat of the fourth-placed Warriors was only Sorensen's third match back from a three-game suspension for his shoulder charge on Manly forward Nathan Brown.

The veteran's absence is a big blow for the resurgent Panthers, who are keeping pace with the top eight following a dismal start to the season.
Sorensen was among their best in Saturday's boilover, scoring two tries including the go-ahead four-pointer in the second half.
He also made the try-saving tackle that allowed the Panthers to seal their previous win over Wests Tigers.
The Panthers' five State of Origin representatives will return to face the Bulldogs on Thursday night, with Isaiah Papali'i and Luke Garner both options to start in Sorensen's absence.

Warriors reporter set to make big ESPN move

The post Warriors reporter set to make big ESPN move appeared first on ClutchPoints. Longtime Golden State Warriors reporter Anthony Slater is set to leave The Athletic and join ESPN later this summer, as reported by Front Office Sports. This transition brings a significant voice to ESPN's NBA coverage. Slater will keep his focus on the Warriors while also expanding his reporting to cover the broader league. Advertisement Slater's departure signals another big change at The Athletic's Bay Area bureau. This office has experienced numerous staff changes over the past two years. Former colleagues Tim Kawakami and David Lombardi joined the San Francisco Standard in 2023. Meanwhile, Ethan Strauss left in 2022 to start his subscription service. The once-trailblazing Bay Area team at The Athletic played a crucial role in the site's early subscription success, especially during the Warriors' championship runs. Before his time at The Athletic, Slater reported on the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he closely followed the early careers of stars like Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. At The Athletic, he became a prominent voice in the outlet's Warriors coverage, hosting popular podcasts such as Warriors Plus Minus and All-82, and providing in-depth reporting during multiple title runs. He also contributed to national playoff and Finals coverage. His move to ESPN comes as the network plans to refresh its NBA team. Recently, ESPN lost several notable talents, including Zach Lowe, Adrian Wojnarowski, and Kevin Arnovitz. The network is focusing more on regional coverage, with Slater joining current contributors Tim MacMahon, Tim Bontemps, and Kendra Andrews. Each of them will cover specific areas or teams, rather than traditional national roles. The NBA media scene is getting more competitive by the day. With big players like NBC Sports and Amazon Prime Video stepping into the ring just before the new media rights cycle kicks off in 2025, ESPN is making moves to keep its crown as the go-to source for NBA news and analysis by bringing in seasoned reporters. Advertisement On the flip side, Slater's exit leaves a gap at The Athletic's Warriors desk. Although the New York Times-owned outlet still focuses on major-market teams, its strategy has shifted, sometimes leaving specific team roles vacant as it undergoes reorganization. Still, given that Golden State remains one of the league's most beloved franchises, we can expect some form of coverage for the team to carry on. Slater's move to ESPN marks not just a personal milestone for him but also signals a larger shift in the NBA media landscape as networks gear up for what's next. Dell Curry makes eye-opening Stephen Curry retirement claim

The post Dell Curry makes eye-opening Stephen Curry retirement claim appeared first on ClutchPoints. It does sound like Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry will retire soon, at least according to his dad, Dell Curry. Advertisement Speaking to Curry discussed his son's future. Make no mistake, Stephen Curry is 'not even close' to making the decision to retire since he wants to win another NBA Championship before hanging it up. 'He still loves the game, 'Dell Curry said of Stephen. 'He's a competitive guy. He wants to win another title, so we're not even close to that window yet. But when the time comes, I think he'll make the right decision.' The decision will not come down to Stephen's skills declining. It may come down to his stamina and willingness to undergo a grueling NBA season. 'I think it'll come down to—not necessarily skill or what he can do in a game in the same,' he rationed. 'I think it's a matter of, can he go through the rigors of preparing himself to play in an NBA season?' Advertisement He then explained that that was a factor in his own retirement. 'I know when I retired, that was a big factor. I just didn't feel like I had the energy [or] the effort to work and train throughout the summer. So I wouldn't short myself, my teammates, or the fans and give my all during that season,' he explained. Stephen, 37, remains one of the best shooters in the NBA. His father thinks his playing style could lend itself to him playing deeper into his 40s. 'Absolutely [he can play into his 40s], just because he can shoot the basketball, and he's going to require attention,' the elder Curry explained. 'Even if you put him in the corner at 40, 41 years old, you have to guard him. That means that he's creating space for other guys around him. 'If you can shoot the basketball, there's a team that can use you in today's NBA. But if you're Steph Curry, I think you're going to be able to play until you say, 'I'm done,'' he continued. When will the Warriors' Stephen Curry retire? It is unknown when Curry plans on retiring. The Golden State Warriors legend will be able to make the decision whenever he feels it's right, according to his father. Advertisement Dell Curry played in the NBA from 1986-2002, averaging 11.7 points per game, while his son, Stephen, is heading into the 17th season of his career. The Warriors made it to the Western Conference Semifinals during the 2024-25 season. They lost the series against the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. Brisbane storm home to bite Sharks, with Walsh on fire

Brisbane have stormed home from a 16-point deficit to beat a wasteful Cronulla 34-28, with fullback Reece Walsh igniting the comeback. When Sharks hooker Blayke Brailey darted over from dummy half to secure a 28-12 lead in the 56th minute, the Broncos appeared cooked in front of 39,042 fans at Suncorp Stadium. Instead the Broncos scored four tries in 18 minutes, with Walsh setting up two, to usurp the Sharks in fifth position. Sharks forward Teig Wilton went to hospital in the first half after suffering blurred vision from an eye injury, before winger Sione Katoa had a brain explosion on the cusp of halftime. He was sin-binned for a ridiculous touch on Ezra Mam when he was laying in the ruck. The Broncos were too daft to make the most of it. Instead Brailey darted over from close range and the result appeared secured, but the Sharks then fell apart. Winger Ronaldo Mulitalo was ruled to have knocked on and Walsh made the Sharks pay with a bullet pass to centre Gehamat Shibasaki. Sharks five-eighth Braydon Trindall kicked out on the full and Broncos winger Josiah Karapani stormed in despite Sharks half Nicho Hynes falling over and claiming an obstruction. Skipper Adam Reynolds then darted and weaved in traffic and threw a basketball-style pass for Karapani to score his second try double in as many weeks. Reynolds landed it from the sideline for a 30-28 lead. When Walsh carved through Hynes to set up Shibasaki for his second, it was all over. The first half was a bizarre affair, with the Sharks leading 22-12 at the break. Brisbane's kicking game and line speed were poor, with fullback Walsh giving up two seven-tackle sets. The Sharks attacked with freedom, halves Trindall and Hynes both playing leading roles. Trindall laid on the pass for centre Siosifa Talakai to score. He was at it again to put Wilton through a gaping hole, and fullback William Kennedy finished it off for a 10-0 lead. The Sharks opened the scoring through Talakai after Broncos winger Jesse Arthars spilt a bomb. Kennedy scored his second with a classic after Hynes sent second-rower Briton Nikora on his merry way. Trindall did the same for Hynes to stroll through for a 22-6 lead after Broncos hooker Cory Paix darted over from dummy half for the softest try you will ever see. Mam scored on the cusp of halftime to keep the home side in it.
