‘I don't have vertigo anymore': Hans Zimmer on his new documentary, Glastonbury, and his on-stage proposal

Independent22-03-2025

Hans Zimmer used to have vertigo, but has overcome it to the point that he was able to perform from the helipad of the Burj Al Arab, one of the tallest hotels in the world.
The revered composer, 67, features in the jaw-dropping scene for his new documentary, Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert, which opened this week to a limited release in select global cinemas.
Directed by Paul Dugdale with Jerry Bruckheimer serving as executive producer, the film captures a live performance by Zimmer and his orchestra of some of his best known works, including the scores to films such as Gladiator, Dune, The Lion King, Interstellar and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Interspersed between footage of the concert at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai are dramatic performances such as the one at the Burj Al Arab, along with interviews with some of the German musician's close collaborators, from directors Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan to actors Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.
'I think I have the best band in the world right now,' Zimmer told The Independent 's new podcast, Roisin O'Connor's Good Vibrations. 'We were in the Middle East and Denis [Villeneuve] was shooting Dune around the corner, so we thought… you know, why not?'
He said it was important to be able to capture the sheer scale of his tour operation, which now includes '15 articulated lorries and 13 buses', so that fans can enjoy it 'all over the world'.
'I used to get vertigo,' he said, while discussing the scene at the Burj Al Arab, 'but I also, for 40 years, wouldn't set foot on a stage either because I got stage fright.
'And the whole thing of being terrified by 20,000 people every night and at the same time, loving everything that's going on… suddenly I don't have vertigo anymore. You just know how to plant your feet. And I went right up to the edge!'
Zimmer is now so accustomed to the stage that he was able to summon the courage to propose to his partner, hotelier and film producer Dina De Luca, during a live show at the O2 Arena in London, back in 2023.
The romantic gesture was not planned, he revealed: 'I just had to do it. She looked so beautiful. I knew what I wanted to do, but I didn't dare to do it. And so I said, 'I have some, I have some important questions to ask you… Uh, did you put the milk back in the fridge? Did you lock the back door? Will you marry me?'
He confirmed that she accepted, and praised his partner for being 'incredibly supportive' of his career.
In the same interview, Zimmer discussed how he continued writing music after completing the score for Villneuve's adaptation of Dune starring Chalamet and Zendaya, only to learn later that this made him ineligible for the Oscars when Dune: Part Two was submitted.
'I got disqualified by the Oscars because the music that Dune 2 used was created before the movie,' he said.
'One of their reasons was because I used the tunes again from the first movie, but of course I used the tunes again from the first movie, since it was the completion of a story with the same characters!'
He joked: 'Maybe we should have recast [the sequel] as well.'
Zimmer won the Oscar for Best Score in 2022 for his work on the first Dune film. His first Academy Award win was in 1994 for The Lion King.
The current Academy rules for music eligibility from sequels state: 'In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20 per cent of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.'
Villeneuve also hit back at the idea that Zimmer's second score should be deemed ineligible, telling Variety's Awards Circuit podcast that he did 'a tremendous amount of music' and that Part Two was a new score.
The composer is the first to admit that he has, on occasion, had to be persuaded to do things, such as when Pharrell and Johnny Marr first convinced him to take his music on tour. The trio discuss their conversations in the documentary, with Marr joking that Zimmer now tours more than him.
Meanwhile, Marr's son Nile, also a musician, was apparently the one who told him to 'get over himself' and perform the score to The Lion King at Coachella festival in 2017.
'I didn't want to play it. I'm going, no, this is a kid's movie,' Zimmer explained. 'And Nile goes, 'Hans, this was the music of my youth, get out there.' And we played it, and 80,000 people started crying.'
Zimmer's daughter, graphic artist, photographer and model Zoë Zimmer, has also been telling him he should perform at Glastonbury: 'I think it's on the cards,' he said. 'I'd love to be the weird guy who drags an orchestra and a choir around.'
The full episode of 'Good Vibrations' with Zimmer will be available from Wednesday 26 March on all streaming platforms. 'Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert' is in cinemas now for a limited time.

Who is playing in the Baller League final?

BALLER LEAGUE is coming to its captivating conclusion - and one side will finally get their hands on the first-ever title. The influence-led league, headlined by KSI, saw former Premier League stars, futsal players and celebrities face each other in a 12-team group stage format. 2 And the indoor six-a-side tournament has consistently kept fans on the edge of their seats by providing bags of entertainment from Matchday 1. Deportrio which is managed by footballing icons Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and Gary Lineker currently top the leaderboards and are heavy favourites to win it. But they've been given a run for their money by second-place MVPs United who are being led by popular TV host Maya Jama and Swiss footballer Alisha Lehmann. However, those two above are not the only sides that can make it in the highly anticipated final. Who is in the Baller League final? The two teams that will feature in the Baller League final will be decided once the semi-final matches have been contested. Deportrio, led by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, topped the standings on goal difference after 11 rounds of action-packed fixtures. Alisha Lehmann and Maya Jama 's MVP United narrowly missed out on top spot by one goal, but they have secured their place in the final four. Yanited and SDS FC complete the sides competing for Baller League glory next Thursday night - and fans are treated to even more thrilling action at the O2. Here are the semi-final fixtures: Semi-final 1: Deportrio vs SDS FC Semi-final 2: MVPs United vs Yanited Final: SF1 winner vs SF2 winner 2 What are the rules? Leading up to the big final day, in the event two teams are tied after 11 matches, the order will be first decided by goal difference, then goals scored, followed by the result between the two sides in question. If, after these three stipulations, the two sides are still level, a shootout will determine who progresses. IHowever, in the event of a draw in the Final Four after the regular 30 minutes, a penalty shootout is held in which each team initially provides three takers. What do you get for winning the Baller League final? Besides lifting the title, it has not been revealed what the winning team would earn from being crowned champions of the UK Baller League. However, reports suggest that players earn £400 for every match that they participate in. So doing the maths, any player that played in all 11 group stage matches, the semi-final and then the final, would earn a minimum of £5200.

A new look for Centre Court?Wimbledon serves up its most fashion forward clothing collection yet

For over a century, watching tennis at Wimbledon has come with its own unspoken dress code. Spectators traditionally reached for Panama hats and starched linen jackets as instinctively as players pulled on their all-whites. But this year the chic woven headwear is making way for an array of trendy bucket hats while denim jackets now sit comfortably alongside heritage blazers. Launching today (Thurs), the All England Lawn Tennis Club's 2025 collection marks its biggest shift from genteel, old-school chic towards the fashion-forward, semi-formal 'tenniscore' aesthetic. The 'Court to Club' capsule is said to be a curated edit designed to allow customers to move seamlessly from court-side to post-match socialising and country club style . The collection comprises 174 pieces, priced from £10 to £155, and includes items such as navy and green hoodies, a beanie, £139 striped joggers, and crepe jackets. It has ten different styles of bucket hats on offer - compared to just the one Panama - having only introduced the item for the first time last year. This includes a £39 white option, a new addition to the popular strawberry collection first launched in 2024 in a nod to the SW19 staple - which is embroidered with a giant strawberry. There has been a subtle move in the Wimbledon Shop towards the preppy tenniscore trend made popular by Zendaya's Challengers movie sending sales sky-rocketing Meanwhile sculpting gym leggings and cycling shorts have made their first appearance at the Club alongside long-standing traditional tennis skirt pleats. There has been a subtle move in the Wimbledon Shop towards the preppy tenniscore trend made popular by Zendaya's Challengers movie sending sales sky-rocketing. Last year's collection which featured stylish bomber jackets, strawberry logoed sweaters and vintage cardigans was the Club's best selling ever at both SW19 and online with each seeing double-digit growth. 'This year's collection is inspired by the entire Wimbledon experience—from the intensity of the game to the social atmosphere of the Club,' said Daniel Ashmore, AELTC's Head of Retail and Merchandising. 'We've drawn inspiration from our archives and the evolving trends in tennis fashion, designing a collection that caters to everyone – from serious players looking for the best performance wear, to those who simply enjoy the social side of the sport, and want to look the part. 'All of the pieces blend performance functionality with a touch of country club elegance, perfect for both on and off the court,' he said. The collection also draws on the Club's rich heritage with a newly developed Wimbledon wordmark, inspired by a flowing script discovered on an early 20th-century croquet box from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum's archives. The release comes as new data from the AELTC shows tennis is experiencing a cultural resurgence in the UK fueled by fashion. Of the 2001 Brits polled, 43 per cent say the sport is becoming a stronger part of national identity, rising to 70 per cent among 25 to 34-year-olds. Last year's collection which featured stylish bomber jackets, strawberry logoed sweaters and vintage cardigans was the Club's best selling ever at both SW19 and online In that same age group, 57 per cent say they are following the tenniscore trend, and 64 per cent already own tennis-inspired clothing. The 2025 Wimbledon Retail Collection is available now in-store and online, ahead of The Championships, which take place from 30 June to 13 July.

Twins who played Ross and Rachel's baby daughter on Friends dish behind-the-scenes secrets

They had their first taste of Hollywood at only six months old - but over 22 years later Alexandra and Athena Conley have taken off in a different direction. The twin sisters, 23, were both cast to play Emma Geller-Greene in the ninth season of Friends, appearing in six episodes of the famous sitcom. The duo went viral last month after Alexandra posted a TikTok video, revealing their secret sitcom past as Ross Geller and Rachel Greene's daughter. The clip, which has now been viewed over 2.2 million times, began with a recent picture of Alexandra striking a pose, with overlaid text that read: 'Told him I was on TV as a baby.' The next slide was a picture of one of the girls in a coat with a pink bow in her hair, being held by David Schwimmer, with Jennifer Aniston standing nearby. A selfie followed which read, 'Oh so you did like Gerber commercials?' The post then ended with the photo of them from Friends which has the hashtag, '#holyairball.' While the girls, who grew up in Long Beach, California, were having fun looking back at their showbiz days, they admitted their video received 'a lot of mixed reviews.' 'Well, a lot of people thought that we weren't the actual twins, because we were only on it for a little bit,' Alexandra told The girls, who made their debut in the episode The One Where Rachel Goes Back To Work, explained they only appeared in a handful of episodes before their time on screen was cut short. 'Alexandra actually got us kicked off,' Athena exclaimed. 'We got it, and then she cried too much, and they couldn't use me the whole time because of child labor laws.' The girls were replaced by Noelle and Cali Sheldon who took over playing Emma from 2002 to 2003 - whom the girls are now quasi friends with. 'We follow each other on Instagram,' Alexandra quipped. 'We've followed each other for a really long time since you were younger.' Despite a short time on set, they still walked away from their experience with some good stories - or at least that's what their mom has told them. 'She just said that all the cast members were super friendly, and all of the guys were hilarious like they'd be cracking jokes the whole time,' Athena recalled. 'She's like, "Oh, yeah, they would just say lines on the spot, and half of it would get put in the show" which that was something to me where I was like, wow, that's awesome,' she continued, adding the cast was all 'super sweet and welcoming.' They also revealed their on-screen mom - Jennifer Anniston - had a hand in selecting them for the role. '[Our mom said] they had actually shown photos of us to Jennifer Aniston — that's how she ended up choosing us,' Alexandra shared. While they haven't met anyone from the cast yet as adults, they have been back to the set to see where it all began. 'We did do a Friends tour at Warner Brothers a while ago. We were hoping there'd be a cast member there, but it was really cool,' Athena explained. 'We got to see the set and everything, but we have not gotten to meet anybody.' Despite their early start in the TV show, neither one of the girls have pursued a career in showbiz. Alexandra now works as a marketing and social media coordinator for a beauty company. Athena became a cheerleader for the Denver Broncos last year and also works as an investment control reconciler for a financial services company. While neither one of the Conleys pursued a career in the limelight after their stint as baby actresses, they loved what the show has given them and are huge fans. 'I have been a fan ever since I watched it for the first time and, to this day, it is still my all time favorite show,' Athena gushed, with Alexandra agreeing. She added: 'Each character brings something so unique and hilarious to the group — I see a bit of myself in all of them, which is what makes this show so special. No matter how many times I've rewatched the series, it still makes me laugh like it's my first time seeing it. It always lifts my mood and will forever be my favorite show.'
