Title: Preamble
Content: The Club World Cup has reached its business stage. Saturday provided the first two last 16 ties, with Palmeiras winning the battle of Brazil, defeating the the South American champions Botafogo, while Chelsea overpowered Benfica. No doubt the Fifa suits will be licking their lips at the thought of this next last 16 encounter… it's the Champions League winners against the Team Lionel Messi Plays For. Paris Saint-Germain versus Inter Miami.
In fairness, there's no shortage of narrative for this one in Atlanta, given it's Messi against his former employers – the team at which he never looked or felt particularly comfortable – and against his former Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique. Inter Miami have a good few others of an ex Barça persuasion, too. You may not give them a prayer and that may prove justified, but hey this could be lots of fun!
You suspect the team that beats PSG might become team that wins the Club World Cup. Let's see what the MLS outfit can do to nullify Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele et al. Dembele is expected to feature, most likely from the bench, after missing the CWC group stage with injury.
Kick off is at 5pm (BST), which is midday local time in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

EXCLUSIVE From homelessness to training Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes... how Quincy Avery became the NFL's quarterback guru

Football jerseys line the walls where Quincy Avery sleeps. Just as they did nearly two decades ago, when he drove his Mustang out west to California. Avery had graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta when, in 2008, he talked himself into a role as an assistant with the UCLA Bruins. It was a first step. But it was also unpaid. So Avery set up camp in the locker room. 'You got a shower, an air mattress… your whole setup,' the 39-year-old says. He couldn't ask his mom to fund an apartment. He wouldn't have had much time there, anyway.

NBA's Malik Beasley under federal investigation over gambling allegations

NBA free agent Malik Beasley is under investigation by the US district attorney's office regarding gambling allegations tied to league games, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the matter. ESPN was the first to report on the investigation and said the allegations are believed to be related to the 2023-24 season when Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks. 'We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors' investigation,' NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement released on Sunday. 'There have been no charges against Malik,' Steve Haney, Beasley's attorney, told the AP. 'It's just an investigation at this point. We hope people reserve judgement until he's charged – or if he's charged. It's not uncommon for there to be a federal investigation.' The probe into the 28-year-old comes 14 months after the NBA issued a lifetime ban for Toronto's Jontay Porter, who was linked to a prop bet investigation and eventually pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud. This past season, the Wall Street Journal reported that Terry Rozier – then of the Charlotte Hornets – was under investigation for activity related to unusual betting patterns surrounding him in a March 2023 game. Rozier, now of the Miami Heat, has not been charged with any crime, nor has he faced any sanction from the NBA. Porter's ban came after a similar investigation into his performance and 'prop bets' – wagers where bettors can choose whether a player will reach a certain statistical standard or not during a game. The Porter investigation started once the league learned about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter's performance in a game in March 2024. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior to the game and said that another individual – known to be an NBA bettor – placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1m. US sports leagues have also come under criticism for promoting gambling during games, while simultaneously applying heavy punishments to players found guilty of betting. Beasley signed last year with the Pistons, taking a one-year contract for $6m in the hopes of cashing in this summer as a free agent. A second person, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity because no deal was announced, said Detroit was 'very interested' in re-signing Beasley to a multi-year contract – which ESPN reported to be worth $42m – this summer. Those talks may be in jeopardy, given the uncertainty regarding the federal probe. He has $59.5m in career earnings. Beasley made a single-season, franchise-record 319 three-pointers in the regular season. He helped Detroit make the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and end an NBA-record 15-game postseason losing streak in the first round against the New York Knicks. Beasley averaged 16.3 points last season and has averaged 11.7 points over his career with Denver, Minnesota, Utah, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee and Detroit. He scored a career-high 19.6 points a game during the 2020-21 season with the Timberwolves. The Atlanta native played at Florida State and the Nuggets drafted him No 19 overall in 2016.

Dean Kremer, Orioles quiet Rays' bats

June 29 - Dean Kremer threw seven shutout innings and the Baltimore Orioles, after giving up 19 total runs in the first two games of the series, won the rubber match by defeating the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 on Sunday afternoon. Ramon Laureano and Gary Sanchez both had two hits for the Orioles, who won for only the third time in their last eight games. Kremer (7-7) limited Tampa Bay to three singles and one walk while striking out six batters. He picked up his second victory against the Rays this month. Keegan Akin and Felix Bautista each threw one inning of relief for what became a combined five-hitter. Bautista surrendered Brandon Lowe's home run to lead off the ninth. The Rays rarely threatened, going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. They made a habit of producing early offense in the first two games of the series, but never got cranked up in the finale. Tampa Bay starter Taj Bradley (5-6) took the loss, charged with five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Bradley struck out two and issued one walk. The Orioles scored first on Colton Cowser's single in the second inning. Baltimore got two more runs in fifth with Coby Mayo's single and Ramon Urias' sacrifice fly driving in the runs. The margin went to 5-0 in the sixth on Sanchez's single and Cedric Mullins' sacrifice fly. Baltimore was largely efficient, stranding only five runners on base. Laureano scored two runs. Lowe's 18th home run of the season got the Rays on the board. Yandy Diaz followed with a walk before Bautista struck out Jonathan Aranda, Jake Mangum and Curtis Mead. No Tampa Bay player had more than one hit. Tampa Bay completed a six-game road trip with a 4-2 record. The Orioles have won four of the seven meetings so far between the American League East teams this year. --Field Level Media
