Reese Witherspoon's Legally Blonde prequel Elle is branded a 'pointless money grab' that 'nobody wants to see' by disgruntled fans
As casting announcements continue to be made about the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel, disgruntled fans have dubbed the Reese Witherspoon-produced series a 'pointless money grab' that 'nobody wants to see'.
Titled Elle, the production is set to sashay onto screens in summer 2026, and features 24-year-old rising star Lexi Minetree as a young Elle Woods.
But while some fans are keen to see their favourite Harvard-bound heroine in her formative years, others are asking: do we really need to see what Elle was like before she knew what 'habeas corpus' meant?
The new show promises to explore Elle's early life, presumably in the sun-drenched halls of her Beverly Hills high school, before she turned heartbreak into Harvard acceptance.
But if early internet reactions are anything to go by, not everyone is buying the glittery reboot.
While there's certainly excitement around the casting of fresh-faced Minetree, critics have taken to social media to call out what they see as yet another example of a sequel/prequel/spin-off nobody actually asked for.
One user on X said: 'This is so funny to me because why does Elle Woods need a prequel?
'She is one of the most fully formed characters. We fully understand her whole deal and where she came from basically instantly.'
Echoing this sentiment, another person added: 'Also there's no room for good character arc!
'Nobody wants to see how Elle became the person she was at the start of the movie… the movie has her arc, so any arc they give her in the show is going to ring false.'
The original 2001 film Legally Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon in arguably her most well-known role, was praised not just for its bright visuals and punchy dialogue, but for its portrayal of Elle's transformation.
From ditzy fashion student to rising legal star, her backstory isn't a mystery, it's clear from the first five minutes, argued fans.
Another user said: 'Doesn't even make sense… The entire point of Legally Blonde is to show Elle's character arc from superficial to empathetic.
'She wouldn't have had a major character growth story before the events of the film or else it negates the entire point of the film.'
Others questioned the narrative logic. If viewers know Elle's long-time boyfriend Warner Huntington is going to dump her, do they really want to watch them date, they asked.
'Are we supposed to cheer for her and that man when we know what's going to happen?' one commenter asked.
Having already been stretched into three additional films and a hit musical, the prequel series is the latest reimagining. Pictured left, Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, and right, Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods
Another said: 'There is no depth to cover.'
Legally Blonde has already been stretched across three films, a successful Broadway musical and countless Halloween costumes.
The idea of mining the character further suggests, for some, less a hunger for storytelling and more a hunger for nostalgia-fuelled profit.
'It's just a money grab,' one viewer wrote.
Others have suggested the new show is aimed at a younger demographic - perhaps those who weren't yet born when Elle first stood in her pink power suit and told the Harvard admissions board, 'What, like it's hard?'
The series might bring a beloved story to Gen Z viewers who didn't experience the original in real time.
And with the growing popularity of female-led coming-of-age series, perhaps the producers are hoping Elle will follow in the footsteps of shows like Gossip Girl (rebooted), The Summer I Turned Pretty and XO, Kitty.
'I think the reason we see so many sequels, prequels, remakes, live-action remakes, etc. is that our culture is stagnating, and creativity is on the decline,' said one commenter.
But many have questioned whether another iteration of the Legally Blonde series is really necessary
Whether the series turns out to be a fun addition to the Legally Blonde universe or simply another unnecessary spin-off, Elle Woods remains as beloved as ever.
Meanwhile, filming of the new series is well underway and the cast were spotted shooting a scene in Los Angeles earlier this month.
Minetree, who Reese cast as the young Elle Woods after a four-month nationwide search, was seen filming shopping scenes with her co-stars on the iconic Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
Reese will executively produce the show, 24 years after starring as the well-known character in the first film.
In February, Reese announced the news that Lexi got the role of Elle and in May, 2024, Reese reprised her role as Elle Woods to announce the new series.
The star is developing the Legally Blonde spinoff with the help of her production company Hello Sunshine.

Jennifer Lopez makes shock dating life confession after THAT lesbian kiss with backup dancer
Jennifer Lopez has made a shocking confession about her dating life after she kissed both a female and make backup dancer during the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday. The On The Floor songstress, 55 - who is giving her new lavish $21 mansion a 'sexy glow up' - shared her response to comedian Tiffany Haddish saying she wanted to go 'manhunting' together during an interview with Access Hollywood. 'She said that to me,' Lopez said with a laugh just moments after the event came to an end. 'I said, "Girl I'm not looking for no man." I'm happy right now. I'm not trying to ruin it.' The star's divorce from Ben Affleck was officially finalized earlier this year in January - following only two years of marriage. Haddish also took to the stage after Jennifer's opening performance at the AMAs to announce the first award of the evening - but first gave a message to Lopez. SUBSCRIBE to our new Showbiz newsletter for all the latest on Jennifer Lopez. 'Our host just danced to 23 hits in six minutes. Just from that opening number alone, Jenny From the Block got all her steps in for the day. 'Save some dancing for me JLo, d**n. You ain't the only one out here that's single,' she jokingly added to the live audience inside the Fontainebleau hotel in Las Vegas. Lopez not only performed at the awards ceremony earlier this week, but also took on hosting duties. Her opening number showed the star taking part in energetic choreography as she grooved to a mashup of hit tracks from artists nominated during the night. At one point, Jennifer was seen sharing a kiss with both a female and male backup dancer - which left some fans cringing. One social media user on X penned, 'Jennifer Lopez has lost the plot,' while another added, 'Why is Jennifer Lopez kissing everyone at the AMAs?' 'Why is Jennifer Lopez kissing everyone at the AMAs?' a fan typed out, as others labeled the moment as 'disgusting' and 'desperate.' Following the backlash, a source exclusively told how the singer really feels and explained she 'followed the direction of her PR and she did exactly what she was told to do for her post-Ben [Affleck] comeback.' The insider continued, 'She is living her best life and has zero f***s to give right now. She dealt with so much uncertainty, but she was brave. 'She did not allow the negative commentary to bring her down. Instead, she kept going and living her life.' During the AMAs, Jennifer also announced that she is set to return to Las Vegas for an upcoming residency called Up All Night Live. She will take to the stage at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on select dates beginning from December 30 through March of next year. Lopez is also headlining the WorldPride Music Festival in Washington D.C. next month in June alongside singer Troye Sivan. While recently talking to People, the beauty opened up about her excitement for a 'free and happy' summer. 'I'm excited to tour. I'm excited first to go do Pride. I'm super excited about that. I'm working on that show right now too as we speak, and crafting the tour as well. I'm excited to get back out there.' The performer added, 'It seems like a perfect summer to celebrate being free and being happy. 'Just everything in my life right now just feels really healthy and good, and I'm ready to get out there and make people sing and dance and have a good time. That's always my goal.' Lopez was also previously married to Marc Anthony - whom she shares twins Max and Emme, 17, with. The singer shared to the outlet that her children will also possibly accompany her to the WorldPride Music Festival. 'I think my kids are going to come to Pride because I'm doing more of a concert [at WorldPride], so I'm excited about that. They're sweet. They're the best.' Jennifer then explained why her twins were not at the AMAs this week and said it was due to them both being at 'school.' Ahead of her hosting gig on Monday, Lopez notably suffered a nasty injury to her nose during rehearsals. She was required to get stitches but also got help from celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Jason Diamond. In regards to the injury, the star also told People, 'I hurt my nose. I hit it in rehearsal and I had to get stitches. It was fine. 'A few of us have gotten hurt in rehearsals. We're doing a very high-energy athletic number so it's, I guess, bound to happen.'

Heidi Klum looks fabulous at 51 as she flaunts figure in TINY string bikini
Heidi Klum used Instagram to share a new bikini-clad photo with her 12.5 million followers on Friday. The 51-year-old mother-of-four bared her washboard abs in a black and white two-piece swimsuit while standing near a large pool. Klum — who attended the American Music Awards with her 19-year-old son Henry — wrote in the caption, '86 *F ☀️ Los Angeles.' The German supermodel will celebrate her 52nd birthday on June 1, but looks years younger thanks to a healthy, active lifestyle. In addition to Henry, she shares son Johan, 18, and daughter Lou, 15, with ex-husband Seal. The 62-year-old British singer also helped her raise 21-year-old daughter Leni, who she has from a previous relationship. Heidi was married to musician Seal from 2005 until 2014. She is now married to Tokio Hotel music artist Tom Kaulitz, who is 35. Ahead of her 50th birthday two years ago, the blonde bombshell told Entertainment Tonight, 'To be honest, I don't let this number change my path or what I do. It is, for me, just a number, you know?' She added, 'Because I don't feel 50, internally. I mean, sometimes I look in the mirror and I'm like: "Oh yeah, I am 50." But internally, I feel like I'm 25.' Heidi, who is also known for judging America's Got Talent in addition to modeling, gushed at the time: 'I'm full of energy. My husband is 33 and I know I have more energy than him!' She noted that 'the birthday doesn't change anything for me. My passions are the same passions — I love to travel and be there for my family.' The Germany's Next Top Model host takes fitness and diet seriously to maintain her figure. In a 2021 interview with Body and Soul she said, 'I try to eat super healthy. We eat at like 6 to 6:30pm, [and having] home-cooked food, knowing what you're eating is super important. 'I love healthy food; I don't really eat much junk. I like to be fit and I like to feel fit. I know that when I gained a little bit [of weight]... I felt sluggish. I was like, "No, I have to get back into shape."' Klum and Kaulitz, who is also German, got engaged after only one year of dating. They tied the knot in a private ceremony on February 22, 2019, exchanging vows on a luxury yacht. The catwalk favorite often shares outtakes from her life with her husband on social media. And the pair have been known to frequent nude beaches while vacationing outside of the states. Last summer the former Victoria's Secret Angel called her choice to go without a top in St. Barts 'no big deal.' She told that she 'grew up with a lot of nudity' and encourages others to strip off on the beach. 'Even though I am American, I'm also very much European, so I grew up with a lot of nudity on the beach,' the multihyphenate explained. 'So for me, this would be no big deal. Plus I was on a French island, and if you look around, most girls are topless, so it's just a very common thing,' Heidi emphasized.
