At 5:45 A.M. on the opening day of H&H Bagels' Santa Monica shop, company CEO Jay Rushin was making his way to the new location from his hotel. It was dark and chilly amid thick fog.
'I had no idea how many people were going to be there,' Rushin says. 'I turned the corner on Montana and the line was two blocks long. I was pretty blown away.'
Founded in 1972 by Puerto Rican immigrants Helmer Toro and Hector Hernandez, H&H Bagels was born on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It has been one of the most iconic brands in the city, making TV cameos on Seinfeld; Sex and the City and The Office.
Rushin acquired the company in 2014, after a 20-year career on Wall Street. The self-proclaimed 'world's worst salesperson,' says he wanted a product that could sell itself. His aim: to take H&H nationwide, with a current location already in Boca Raton, Fla., and plans to expand to Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Orange County; and San Diego.
'I would say we're getting a bigger reception outside of New York than we do in New York,' says Rushin. 'It's really incredible.'
The signature bacon, egg and cheese
New products are also in the mix. The brand's spicy scallion cream cheese debuted April 4 and is available online and in stores. A blend of peppers provides the added kick.
For Mother's Day, H&H is offering a 10% discount on all nationwide shipping. Bundles range from $59 to $244 and include up to two dozen bagels, spreads and Nova Scotia smoked salmon.
'We're constantly iterating. We're constantly trying to improve everything about the brand,' says Rushin. 'Whether it's the quality of products or whether it's the customer experience. … One of the driving forces of our culture is constant improvement and constant change."

Former rivals Baker Tilly and Moss Adams just merged as private equity reshapes accounting. Their CEOs explain why they did the deal.
Baker Tilly and Moss Adams merged this week in a deal that marks another shake-up for mid-market consulting firms and emphasizes the role being played by private equity in US accounting. The two firms, which are both in the tier below the Big Four, have a combined annual revenue of over $3 billion. By joining forces, they've catapulted themselves above BDO, Grant Thornton US, and CLA to become the 6th largest accounting firm by revenue in the US. The move brings together 11,500 employees into one firm that will keep the Baker Tilly name and be an independent member firm in the Baker Tilly International network. In a joint interview, the two CEOs of the merged firms told Business Insider that the move is mutually strategic and will help them navigate the challenges facing the mid-market. "We just added a bunch of arrows into our quiver," said Jeff Ferro, CEO of Baker Tilly. The deal also offers an insight into how private equity is reshaping the industry in the US. In 2024, Baker Tilly sold a stake to the private investment groups Hellman & Friedman (H&F) and Valeas, in the second-largest deal in the sector at the time. Baker Tilly is now, thanks to the merger, the largest firm in the industry to be partly owned by private-equity investors. It's a trend that is redefining the culture and business model of traditional accounting firms. Firms have typically paid out profits to equity partners, who also get a vote on how they are run. Private equity offers an influx of capital to help firms evolve their technology and data, but requires firms to divest the control historically promised to partners, shaking up their culture. Ferro told BI that Baker Tilly's strategic plan had been to grow through acquisition, and was a key part of what H&F bought into when they signed the deal. H&F will also make a "meaningful additional strategic investment in the business" as part of this transaction. "Our chances of executing our strategy were good, and now I think they're great," said Ferro. A merger that expands the firms' reach Combining firms also created strategic advances in geographic reach — Moss Adams is West Coast-focused, while Baker Tilly mostly covers the East, central, and has some international clients. The two firms bring specific industry strengths to the table and different tools and service capabilities to offer clients, Ferro said. "I see us being a $6 billion revenue organization in five years," Ferro said, which would mean doubling their current combined revenues. "It's quite a win," agreed Eric Miles, the former CEO of Moss Adams, who will take over from Ferro as CEO of Baker Tilly when Ferro retires at the end of the year. The needs of the mid-market client base are changing, and they require more scale and breadth of services than they used to, he said. At the same time, the firms themselves are seeing increasing demand for true fixed costs like training and development, and AI. Those kinds of pressures require large organizations to scale to be competitive, he said. Neither firm had to do the merger, Miles said, "But we had this strategic lens on it, saying, 'how can we be stronger? What's going to be required to be a leading competitive firm in the future?'" "The partnership with Baker-Tilly helped us meet all those long-term strategic objectives, which helps us not only deal with these forces, but get out in front and lead in the market," Miles said.

However, some people — especially on Reddit — questioned his path to wealth, accusing the billionaire of scamming people to achieve his fortune. Cuban's initial riches didn't come from 'Shark Tank' or owning a basketball team. You need a lot of money to have those types of opportunities. The entrepreneur's big payday came in 1999 when Yahoo acquired his internet radio startup for $5.7 billion. Cuban knew that his startup and most of the dot-com companies were overpriced. That's part of the reason he was eager to sell his company to Yahoo for $5.7 billion. Yahoo was making acquisitions left and right and lost a lot of money on a lot of deals. just happens to be a stand-out that is connected with Cuban. It's similar to when an investor sells a stock before it drops by 80%. It's not a scam, but the investor wanted to part ways with an asset before it lost significant value. Cuban knew this risk and used options to hedge his position in Yahoo stock. He received $1.4 billion in shares that he couldn't sell right away, so he bought Yahoo stock puts and sold calls leading up to the crash. See Next: Furthermore, was only started in 1995, so a $5.7 billion selling price is phenomenal after just two years of work. Financial markets rarely present those types of opportunities and Cuban was quick to pounce on it. It's not like Cuban forced Yahoo to buy his company for $5.7 billion. The company's executives had plenty of time to conduct due diligence and if they rushed the process, then that's on them. Not every business investment pans out and doing some due diligence can minimize the chances of making a mistake. Yahoo made several acquisitions during the dot-com bubble. It was a period of great irrationality that hurt many investors, but a few investors made out of that environment with a lot of money, including Cuban. It's well known that Yahoo executives also had the opportunity to buy Google for $1 million in 1998 but turned it down. They also had another chance to acquire Google for $5 billion in 2002. You can't miss out on more money than Yahoo did, even if you tried. The same management team that refused to buy Google at $5 billion in 2022 gave Cuban and his team $5.7 billion to acquire It's hard to call Cuban a scammer when the executives didn't do sufficient due diligence. There's nothing wrong with Cuban accepting a favorable deal if a company provided it to him after doing their research.
