Sex offender travelled 150 miles to rape girl
A convicted sex offender who travelled from England to Scotland to rape a young girl has been given a life sentence.Wayne Phillipson, 48, contacted the 12 year-old on Snapchat and later met her in a park in West Lothian, having travelled 150 miles from Consett, in County Durham.The vulnerable child was left so traumatised she has yet to return to school more than three years after what police called a "horrendous ordeal".At the High Court in Glasgow Lord Mulholland imposed an Order for Lifelong Restriction and told Philipson he must serve a minimum of seven years behind bars.
The attacker - previously guilty of offences against children - was convicted of rape and communicating indecently with the girl in September 2021 following an earlier trial in Livingston.The judge told Philipson: "You groomed, manipulated and exploited her by false pretences about yourself which culminated in sending her obscene messages."This escalated her into your web of deceit. You travelled from Durham to West Lothian where you waited on her in a local park.""You have shown no remorse whatsoever - it is clear to me that you are a danger to young girls."The judge said a phone call between the pair played at the trial was "degrading and humiliating" towards the victim.Lord Mulholland: "I am satisfied that an Order for Lifelong Restriction should be made in your case."
'Dangerous predator'
Det Insp Craig Higgins at the Child and Adult Protection Unit in Livingston described Philipson as a "dangerous sexual predator" who would now face "the consequences of his actions."He added: "I commend the girl for her strength in reporting his offending and throughout the legal proceedings and hope that this can bring her and her family closure as they continue to move forward with their life."Katrina Parkes, Scotland's procurator fiscal for high court sexual offending, added that she hoped the verdict would give "some comfort" to the victim and her family.Phillipson - who admitted breaching bail after evidence was completed at the trial - was told it would be up to the parole board if he was ever released.He was previously jailed in 2023 for eight and-a-half years in connection with a series of child sex offences.Phillipson used Snapchat and an app called Wink to befriend 12 to 14-year-old children across the country and get them to send indecent images.He was homeless and travelled across the country attempting to meet children, before ultimately being arrested in Wrexham in June 2022.Upon arrest, his mobile phone was found to contain in excess of 100 indecent images and North Wales Police were able to evidence contact with 29 children across the UK.

Her pals helped her put her bedding and clothes in black bags in case she wanted to go to the cops, the court heard, and she reported the alleged incident the following day. Mitchell denies rape plus physically and verbally abusing his ex-girlfriend between July 2021 and November 2022. The trial continues before Judge Graham Buchanan.

Habibur Masum, 26, allegedly launched a 'ferocious' knife attack on Kulsuma Akter, 27, while she pushed their baby's pram in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The mum had fled to a hostel in Bradford 'to escape' her husband's 'violence, jealousyand controlling behaviour', Bradford Crown Court heard. He then sent her a photo of the refuge where she was staying, adding: 'I know that you are living in this place. I knew from the first day you moved here. 'If I had any wish to kill you, I could have from the first day. You do not know what you have lost, but one day you will understand. Nobody will love you like I do.' On the day of her death on April 6 last year, however, Akter 'felt safe to leave the refuge' because she had heard from Masum's relatives that he was in Spain, jurors were told. The mum was out walking her seven-month-old son in a pram with a friend when Masum walked with her into a shop. Masum had tracked down his wife in Bradford in the days leading up to the attack and had tried to lure her out of the hostel by pretending to be from a GP's surgery, the prosecution also said in court. He then pulled out a knife from his jacket and began violently attacking Akter, the court heard. Prosecutor Steven Wood KC said: 'He grabs Kulsuma and pushes her into a wall, stabbing her to the body. You will see that Kulsuma then goes to the ground only for the defendant to launch a ferocious and deadly attack. 'When the defendant had finished stabbing her, as a final act of sheer gratuitous violence, he kicks Kulsuma before moving away, but not before ensuring that he disposed of the knife. 'The [prosecution] say this was cold-blooded, calculated, pre-meditated murder. 'Why would the defendant take a knife with him to meet his estranged wife unless he planned to use it?' Akter had escaped previous threats on her life from her partner, who had been married for 18 months in November 2023, the court heard. Mr Wood said: 'Generally, the relationship had been good, but there were already warning signs. Jurors were told a 'completely innocuous' message from a male colleague to Akter, Masum became violent by slapping her and pulling her hair. The court also heard 'a chilling prediction' made Masum, when he told his wife: 'I am going to murder you, and the police will be taking me'. The next day, he allegedly put a knife to her throat in their bedroom and threatened her over her relationship with the colleague. Masum was arrested that night after a female family member called the police. After denying using violence in a police interview, he was then charged with two offences of assault by beating and one offence of making a threat to kill. Masum denies murdering Ms Akter but has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and possession of a knife. He also denies two charges of assault, one count of making threats to kill and one charge of stalking. The trial continues.
