Capricorn TVET students return from China internship

POLOKWANE – Eight business management students from the Capricorn TVET College have returned after completing a 12-month internship in China, made possible through funding from the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&R Seta).
According to college spokesperson Madire Mashabela, this internship forms part of a long-standing partnership with Chinese Culture, which has been offering international opportunities to students since before the Covid-19 pandemic.
'The selection process for this prestigious opportunity was rigorous and fair and involved advertising, recruiting students and submitting their resumes and qualifications.
The Chinese Culture and W&R Seta conducted a thorough selection process, including vetting qualifications and health screenings, to ensure the most suitable candidates were chosen.'
The programme was fully funded, covering stipends, accommodation and living expenses, giving students a rare opportunity to gain international work experience and exposure to global business practices.
For student Matshukudu Katlego Joyce Marole, the experience was transformative and challenging.
'Living abroad came with immense challenges. It was a complete culture shock, unfamiliar systems and being surrounded by total strangers and I quickly realised that independence and self-reliance weren't just optional, but essential.
'I had to manage my finances, adjust to foreign food, and trust my instincts. Even my faith was tested as I had to rebuild a personal relationship with God, away from familiar church support.'
She described the work culture in China as very different from South Africa's Batho Pele principles.
'In China, productivity is prioritised over personal values. It was a major adjustment, but it pushed me to grow personally and professionally.'
Another intern, Tromocias Kgothatso Moloela, said one of her biggest challenges was the language barrier.
'Even basic tasks like online shopping required translation tools. Culturally, South Africans value open dialogue and freedom of expression. In contrast, I found that Chinese culture places a strong emphasis on following instructions without question.'
Despite the hurdles, the internship sparked a strong interest in international trade and entrepreneurship for Moloela.
After working closely with the Guangdong Baidesi Group, she developed a passion for the bathroom and kitchen accessories industry, and hopes to partner with companies like the Arrow Group to import products into South Africa for her own business.
Marole encouraged other students to embrace similar opportunities with preparation and an open heart. 'Research China thoroughly, embrace your team as teammates, not competitors, and remember, independence doesn't mean selfishness. Unity brings success,' she advised.

With a shared vision of fostering stronger bilateral ties, the consul general outlined strategic initiatives aimed at not just facilitating travel but also enriching the cultural exchange between the two nations. One of the primary focuses of the Consulate General is to promote high-level exchanges between sister cities and provinces. "These efforts help spark greater interest in China among local communities and foster closer people-to-people ties," Li explained. Efforts include enhanced communication and collaboration on tourism initiatives, underpinned by a commitment to mutual understanding and friendship. In a notable development this year, the consulate has initiated an express visa option, designed to streamline the application process for Chinese tourists wishing to visit South Africa. "The express visa can be processed within three to four working days with simple and user-friendly requirements," Li said. This is a significant improvement, especially when the visa process has previously been a major hurdle for potential visitors. For South African tourism operators eager to attract Chinese visitors, Li offered several crucial recommendations. He urged operators to tailor their offerings to better meet the preferences of Chinese visitors. "This includes providing services in Chinese, accepting payment methods like UnionPay and Alipay, and promoting destinations through Chinese social media platforms," he said. Cultural sensitivity and a welcoming atmosphere are also vital in creating memorable travel experiences for Chinese tourists. The consul general acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced in attracting more tourists due to the complexities surrounding the visa application process. "We are actively engaging with the South African Department of Home Affairs, as obtaining a South African visa remains time-consuming and difficult for Chinese citizens," Li said, As for South Africans considering travel to China, the consulate has specific travel guidelines aimed at ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. According to Li, visitors are encouraged to meticulously plan their itineraries and familiarise themselves with essential apps such as WeChat, Alipay, and translation tools, as these are critical for navigating the vast cultural landscape. He added that key destinations such as Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai are highly recommended and travellers are advised to respect local customs and be aware of the legal framework to ensure a harmonious visit. "We truly hope more South Africans will visit China to see and experience more for themselves. He highlighted that the disciplines in high demand span engineering, medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), international relations, and the study of Chinese language and culture — all areas that align closely with South Africa's developmental needs. "The Consulate warmly encourages prospective applicants, highlighting the importance of returnees as contributors to bilateral cooperation," he said. He further highlighted that collaboration is key to enhancing the educational ties between South African institutions and Chinese universities. "Opportunities for joint research initiatives, student and staff exchanges, as well as co-hosted academic programmes are flourishing. For instance, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) has established a partnership with Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University to promote skills development. Notably, the Confucius Institute at DUT has emerged as a prominent cultural and language platform, training thousands of students in Chinese language and culture. The partnership between the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and the Centers for Disease Control in Sichuan province, focusing on HIV/AIDS research and facilitating exchanges of Chinese medical students, exemplifies the potential of such collaborations," he explained. Li also added that the Consulate General is also actively involved in skills development initiatives that enhance economic cooperation between China and South Africa. A focus on technical skills training is evident through collaborations with Chinese enterprises and educational institutions. Areas covered include construction safety, welding, mechanical skills training, and innovative 'Chinese + Vocational Skills' programmes through the Confucius Institute at DUT. In partnership with Tianjin Vocational Institute, the establishment of the Luban Workshop is dedicated to vocational education, he said. He added that the introduction of Juncao technology for mushroom cultivation has empowered local farmers with practical skills while sharing China's poverty alleviation experiences.
