PD has potential as new turtle nesting site
PORT DICKSON: Port Dickson has the potential to become a new nesting site for turtles along the Lukut to Tanjung Tuan coast.
Agriculture, Food Security and Cost of Living Action Committee chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said his team also plans to gazette several locations along the coast as turtle landing sites.
"So far, eight nests have been identified as locations for turtles to lay eggs. Turtle landings here can also be used as a new tourism product.
"The state government and state Fisheries Department are discussing it (gazetting turtle landing areas). We will look for suitable methods, including the conservation and safety of the turtles themselves during the nesting period, because we want these animals to nest undisturbed in the future," he said.
Jalaluddin said this to reporters during the Port Dickson Marine Biodiversity Conservation Programme in Tanjung Biru Beach, which was also attended by Negri Sembilan Fisheries Department director Kassim Tawe.
Jalaluddin, who is also a senior exco member of the state government, said that 991 turtle eggs have been collected and incubated for conservation purposes as of this month.
He said there are two turtle species – the Hawksbill Turtle and Olive Ridley Turtle – that come ashore and lay eggs from March to October, peaking in June.
He also said Port Dickson is famous for diving activities due to its various beautiful coral reefs and marine life species, including reef fish, aquatic plants (latok), turtles as well as marine mammals, especially at Tanjung Tuan.
In a separate development, Jalaluddin, who is also the Jelebu member of Parliament, said that his team will bring up the issue of reducing the speed limit in residential areas from 50 kilometres per hour (kph) to 30 kph at the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting.
He said this after accidents that occurred at the traffic light intersection of Taman Matahari Heights, Persiaran Senawang 1, which caused four deaths in the past three months in the state.

President Marcos retains 21 more agency heads after call for courtesy resignations
MANILA: President Marcos (pic) has retained the appointment of 21 officials, including Cabinet secretaries and agency heads, Malacanang Palace said on Tuesday (June 3), following his call for their courtesy resignations two weeks ago. Ageing farmers threaten food security, productivity, says Fadillah

SERDANG : Malaysia's agriculture sector is facing serious challenges because of an ageing workforce, with nearly half of the country's farmers now aged 60 and above, says deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof. He said the issue is affecting productivity and the country's ability to sustain domestic food production. 'To ensure the sector's sustainability, we must attract more youths to agriculture. 'Without a skilled and competitive younger generation, our goal of reducing import dependence and ensuring national food security will be difficult to achieve,' he said at the launch of the 2024 Agriculture Census interim report today. The report showed that 45.4% of individual agricultural operators are aged 60 and above, while only 22.2% are aged between 15 and 45. Another 32.3% are aged 46 to 59. Fadillah said better incentives, the use of modern technology, and efforts to improve the image of farming as a career are needed to attract younger talent. Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said Sabah recorded the highest number of young farmers, totalling 6,180, aged 15 to 30, followed by Perak (5,149) and Sarawak (3,583). For farmers aged 60 and above, Sarawak topped the list with 63,452, followed by Kedah (61,886) and Sabah (57,007). Uzir said agriculture remains a key part of Malaysia's economy, not just for food supply but also for supporting the processing industry, creating jobs and raising household incomes, particularly among farmers. He said the agriculture census will now be conducted every 10 years, with shorter, interim surveys starting in 2026 to provide more timely data. The last agriculture census was carried out 19 years ago. Also launched at the event was the TaniStats portal, which aims to improve access to agriculture-related data for farmers, policymakers and stakeholders. It includes platforms such as TaniFacts, myFoodStats, myAgrochain and the MyAgroPrice dashboard. The dashboard provides monthly price data for 60 selected agricultural products at farm, wholesale and retail levels, according to states, from 2020 to 2024. Fadillah said this would help farmers plan marketing strategies and assist policymakers in tracking price trends and designing targeted interventions. Data from the statistics department showed that Malaysia imported 60% of its food supply in 2022. Only 24 local agricultural items recorded growth in production that year, compared with 28 in 2021.

New rules coming after 2 tonnes of African catfish released into lake

(Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : New regulations are to be drafted to control the release of fish, especially invasive species, into public waters. The fisheries department announced the move today following complaints about the release of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) into the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang lake in conjunction with a fishing competition organised by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi). The fisheries department said several mitigation measures were agreed upon after a site visit and discussions with relevant officials. 'The fishing competition's secretariat will install additional hapa nets, provide bins to collect African catfish caught during the competition, and disseminate awareness material while carrying out fishing activities throughout the programme. 'Mardi will ensure compliance with the installation of nets, open the lake to controlled fishing activities, and coordinate the inventory and disposal of alien fish after the programme concludes,' the fisheries department said. It said about 1,300 African catfish, weighing about 1.5kg each or a total of two tonnes were released into the lake on May 29, without any notification or request for advisory services from the Selangor fisheries office. The department said the public should seek technical advice from the state fisheries office before carrying out any fish release activities into public waters.
