'Grave concerns': India slams Bangladesh over Durga temple demolition in Dhaka; slams Yunus govt of inaction

Time of India6 hours ago

India on Thursday strongly condemned the demolition of Durga temple in Khilkhet, Dhaka, expressing deep concerns over the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government's handling of the incident and accusing it of siding with extremist elements.
Addressing a press briefing, ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We understand that extremists were clamouring for the demolition of the Durga temple in Khilkhet, Dhaka. The interim government, instead of providing security to the temple, projected the episode as a case of illegal land use and allowed the destruction of the temple today."

The MEA stated that the temple was demolished despite the possibility of protecting the premises, and that the deity itself was damaged before being relocated.
"This has resulted in damage to the deity before it was relocated. We are dismayed that such incidents continue to recur in Bangladesh," Jaiswal added.
India also reminded Bangladesh of its responsibility towards minority communities. "Let me underline that it is the responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to protect Hindus, their properties, and their religious institutions," said the MEA spokesperson.
The temple's demolition has sparked outrage among Hindu groups and rights activists, who see it as part of a recurring pattern of attacks on minority religious sites in Bangladesh

Why US wants your social media account details to grant visas: Explained

Framing every visa decision as a matter of "national security," the U.S. has mandated that applicants submit the usernames or handles of all social media platforms they have used over the past five years. The statement, which was posted on X, read, 'Visa applicants are required to list all social media usernames or handles of every platform they have used from the last 5 years on the DS-160 visa application form. Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit.' The communication continued, 'Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas.' At the weekly media briefing in capital, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked to respond to the statement of the US authorities. Jaiswal continued, 'It is our belief that all visa applications of Indian nationals should be treated on the basis of merit. And, we remain engaged with the US side on all mobility issues and consular issues to ensure that the legitimate interests of Indian nationals are safeguarded.' On June 23, the US Embassy asked those applying for an F, M, or J non-immigrant visa to switch the privacy settings of their social media accounts to "public" to facilitate vetting, which it said was necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the US under law. The embassy had also said that since 2019, the US has required visa applicants to provide "social media identifiers" on immigrant and non-immigrant visa application forms. F or M category is for student visas and J category for exchange visitor visa. In Thursday's communication, the embassy also attached two related digital posters. "Every U.S. visa adjudication is a national security decision," read the caption on the top of a poster followed by a note. The note read, 'The United States requires visa applicants to provide social media identifiers on visa application forms. We use all available information in our visa screening and vetting.' Social media vetting involves reviewing a person's online presence—especially on platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, and LinkedIn—to assess their behavior, affiliations, and public reputation. This practice is increasingly being used in immigration and visa processes. In a recent policy update, the U.S. State Department informed its consulates that foreign students applying for F, M, or J nonimmigrant visas are now 'requested' to make their social media profiles publicly accessible. The aim is to allow officials to verify applicants' identities and conduct more thorough background checks. This move signals a tightening of security protocols, with social media activity now playing a significant role in visa vetting. Applicants are advised to ensure their online profiles reflect accurate, professional, and consistent information. The recent announcements come amid a broader immigration crackdown, including enforcement action in Los Angeles, California, under the Trump administration. In a statement issued on June 24, the embassy emphasised that the US has intensified the enforcement of immigration laws, warning that violators could face detention, deportation, and permanent ineligibility for future visas. The US also cautioned that anyone entering the country illegally would be subject to jail time and deportation. Earlier, on June 19, the embassy clarified that holding a U.S. visa is 'a privilege, not a right,' and that screening continues even after a visa is issued. The statement noted that a visa can be revoked if the holder violates U.S. laws. The embassy had also said that using illegal drugs or breaking any of the US laws while on a student or visitor visa could make one ineligible for future US visa. Earlier this month, the US Embassy in India also issued statements, underlining that while people travelling legally to America were welcome, illegal entry or abuse of visas won't be tolerated by the country. The United States 'will not tolerate' those who facilitate illegal and mass immigration to the US, its embassy said on June 16. The US Embassy had said the US had "established new visa restrictions" targeting foreign government officials and violators.

All Hindus have right to narrate Bhagavad Katha, regardless of caste: Kashi Vidvat Parishad

In response to the recent incident in Etawah where a non-Brahmin kathavachak (religious storyteller) was allegedly assaulted and tonsured, the Kashi Vidvat Parishad , a prestigious council of Sanskrit scholars and experts on Hindu scriptures, has issued a strong statement defending the rights of all Hindus to recite and narrate the Bhagavad Katha. Professor Ramnarayan Dwivedi, General Secretary of the Kashi Vidvat Parishad, said, "In Sanatan Dharma, the right to speak about Bhagavat -- the divine stories of Lord Vishnu -- belongs to every Hindu. No one has the authority to deny this." He added that Hindu tradition is replete with revered figures who were not Brahmins by birth but were honoured as sages due to their wisdom and conduct. "From Maharishi Valmiki to Ved Vyasa and Sant Ravidas, our tradition respects those with devotion, truthfulness, and knowledge - not merely birth," he said. Kashi Vidvat Parishad is an authoritative religious council in Varanasi composed of leading Vedic and scriptural scholars. It is frequently consulted on theological and dharmic matters and its pronouncements hold great weight in the Hindu religious community. Live Events Professor Dwivedi emphasised that the right to narrate religious texts should be based on one's understanding of scriptures and righteous conduct, not caste. "One who is learned and walks the path of dharma is truly a Brahmin or Pandit," he stated. Criticising attempts to politicise the issue, he said, "Some people want to incite internal conflict among Hindus for political gains. Hindus should recognise and resist such efforts." Commenting on the legal aspect of the Etawah incident, Dwivedi said, "If it is true that there was a violation of the law, the administration must ensure an impartial investigation and proceed according to constitutional norms. Those found guilty must be held accountable." Vice Chancellor of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Professor Bihari Lal Sharma, echoed the Parishad's views. "There is no restriction in the scriptures based on caste when it comes to narrating religious stories. Anyone who is qualified and knowledgeable may do so. Knowledge does not differentiate on the basis of caste; it treats everyone equally," he said. "God resides in everyone. Therefore, all are equal, and no one should be discriminated against. Those whose conduct is pure and who are learned in the scriptures are to be regarded as Brahmins," he added. Days after the alleged caste-based tonsuring of a Bhagwat Katha preacher and his aide in Etawah's Dandarpur village, tensions escalated on Thursday as members of Yadav groups staged protests demanding the arrest of all accused and withdrawal of the case registered against the victims. The incident that triggered the unrest took place on the night of June 22-23 in the village. Two Bhagwat Katha preachers -- Mukut Mani Yadav and his aide Sant Singh Yadav -- were allegedly tonsured and humiliated by "upper-caste" men after it was found that they belonged to the Yadav caste. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media and was also shared by the SP chief, showed the accused purportedly saying, "You are getting punished for coming to the village of Brahmins." The victims alleged they were interrogated about their caste, forced to show identification and subjected to humiliation. "I was tortured all night. My head was shaved, and they sprinkled urine on me, saying it was to purify me," said Sant Singh Yadav. Following the video's circulation, four accused -- Ashish Tiwari, Uttam Kumar Awasthi, Nikki Awasthi and Manu Dubey -- all residents of the village, were arrested and booked.

BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar from Partur in Jalna and a former Maharashtra minister, has stirred controversy after a video of his speech went viral. In the video, he criticised local youths for speaking against the government on social media despite benefiting from various welfare schemes . What Did Lonikar Say? Speaking at a public event, Lonikar said, "Prime Minister Modi gave your father Rs 6,000 every year for farming. Your mother, sister, and wife got money through the Ladki Bahin scheme. The clothes you wear, the shoes on your feet, and even the mobile phones in your hands, all of these are because of our government. Yet you speak against us?" BJP Faces Backlash His comments have put the BJP-led Mahayuti government in an uncomfortable position. Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis criticised the MLA, saying, "Such remarks are wrong, even if aimed at a specific group. Leader of the Opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve said, "Lonikar's words reflect a British-era mindset. In a democracy, such arrogance is unacceptable." Maharashtra Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal went further, calling the remarks "disgusting" and demanded Lonikar's expulsion from the party.
