A reflection of GBV within the sporting landscape

Where is the accountability? Former Orlando Pirates attacker Thembinkosi Lorch was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend two years ago. After he served his two-week suspension, he resumed his career and earned a big-money move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he won the league title during the 2023/24 season. He then moved to Wydad Casablanca. Currently, he's preparing to represent the Moroccan giants at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which kicked off in Miami this Sunday morning. It seems that Lorch is off the hook, and his assault on his then-girlfriend has now been forgotten. Other footballers have been accused in the past, but charges were either not opened or their cases never made it to court. In a country where 33.1% of women aged 18 and older have endured physical violence in their lifetime, according to a report by the Human Sciences Research Council, sweeping Lorch's past transgressions under the rug paints a picture that the scourge of GBVF is not important. The Human Sciences Research Council report revealed that 33.1% of women aged 18 and older – amounting to over 7.8 million women – have endured physical violence in their lifetime. A fresh incident in everyone's mind is that of Manchester United player, Mason Greenwood. The forward was accused of raping and assaulting a woman. He was arrested in January 2022 after a video and images went viral. In 2023, BBC reported that the charges were dropped. According to SABC Sport, Greenwood has "revitalised his career in Ligue 1." Another soccer player, Thamsanqa Gabuza was arrested for allegedly trying to force himself on his then girlfriend. The former TS Galaxy player appeared in court and was granted Times reported that he has since moved to AmaTuks. Image: Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix Dr Zubeda Dangor, of The Nisaa Institute for Women's Development, says it's important for clubs to publicly condemn gender-based violence and femicide and make it clear that such behaviour is not tolerated. Dangor feels that while there has been progress in condemning GBVF in sport, more could be done to promote gender equality and prevent GBVF. She urged clubs to develop clear policies, provide education, and collaborate with experts. 'Sports clubs and organisations should collaborate with experts, including GBVF specialists, law enforcement, and healthcare providers, to ensure effective response and support for survivors.' The three biggest clubs in South Africa were approached for comment, and to find out what measures were in place to combat GBV in South Africa. Only Kaizer Chiefs replied and said they would need until the end of the month to respond to IOL. What Dangor would love to see is clubs using their platforms to raise awareness and shift public attitudes towards GBV. She said social media campaigns can be used to share educational content, personal stories, and resources related to GBVF. 'By leveraging their platforms, sports clubs can play a significant role in raising awareness, shifting public attitudes, challenging myths, and supporting existing GBVF services,' she said. IOL

PSL transfer news: Rapoo, Zwane, Saleng, Appollis, Shalulile

There's plenty of transfer action blossoming in the PSL, spearheaded by Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. The PSL big three have wasted no time in their pursuit of top talent, with each club linked to some serious firepower, such as AmaZulu star Tshepang Moremi. Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are in the race for SuperSport left-back Neo Rapoo . . Midfielder Samkelo Zwane is reportedly exploring options after recording just thirteen appearances (across all competitions) this season. Insiders believe the 23-year-old is eyeing a loan move rather than a permanent exit. is reportedly exploring options after recording just thirteen appearances (across all competitions) this season. One of PSL's greatest mysteries remains what the future holds for Monnapule Saleng , who is yet to attract any substantial interest but looks certain to depart the Buccaneers. , who is yet to attract any substantial interest but looks certain to depart the Buccaneers. Mamelodi Sundowns have offered three-times PSL winner Peter Shalulile a contract extension. A decision from the player has yet to be made. Rapoo is fast becoming one of the PSL's brightest prospects, and such a tag usually (and has on this occasion) ignites interest from one of South Africa's biggest clubs – this time, he has both the Sowetan giants after his services. 'Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are both keen to sign SuperSport United left-back Neo Rapoo ahead of the new season,' an inside source revealed. 'His performances as he led South Africa U20 to the Africa Cup of Nations title earned him interest in Scandinavia and the Gulf but sources as Matsatsansa have confirmed Chiefs and Pirates are both seriously after the player who is seen as future senior national team left-back.' 'With Orlando Pirates having released Paseka Mako and the retirement of Innocent Maela, their interest on the promising full-back comes as no surprise, while Chiefs are looking to remedy a position that has plagued them in the last couple of seasons.' Makola gives two names for the Orlando Pirates job

Orlando Pirates still haven't named the next coach to replace Jose Riveiro at the Betway Premiership giants next season. Several names have been touted, including Mamelodi Sundowns' legendary former coaches Rulani Mokwena and Pitso Mosimane and AmaZulu FC's former coach Pablo Franco Martin. In the meantime, former Buccaneer Mpho Makola has explained why Mokwena and Mosimane are the top candidates for the job. Famous player's brother announces Kaizer Chiefs move? Rulani Mokwena at the Athlone Stadium during Cape Town Spurs vs Mamelodi Sundowns. Image: IOL 'The best two options are Rulani [Mokwena] and Pitso [Mosimane],' Makola said via FARPost . 'For me, it's clear and obvious. They are the best. Whoever is coming has a big task at hand. As a matter of fact, the team needs a tried and tested candidate,' the former Orlando Pirates ace added. 'The previous coach [Jose Riveiro] won key titles for the team but couldn't win the league title. It has been elusive for a long time. So the new coach must be someone with fresh and unique ideas to win the league title. Jose Riveiro: 'Why I left Orlando Pirates' 'Coach Rulani knows the system very well, considering that he has been there before. It's an added advantage, and coach Pitso is tried and tested both locally and on the continent. 'Those are the undoubted and straightforward candidates for the team's job. It's the league title that is needed and missed at Orlando Pirates,' Makola concluded. Meanwhile, the latest reports have suggested that Mokwena has reached advanced talks to make a return to the Sea Robbers next season. 'It's 11 vs 11, Sundowns will do well' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.
