SL Navy arrests 8 TN fishermen, Stalin writes to EAM for their release
Chennai, June 29 (UNI) Eight fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy
while fishing in the high seas today, even as Chief Minister M K Stalin urged External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar to initiate proactive diplomatic steps to secure their release along with their boat.
The eight fishermen, hailing from Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district, were fishing in a mechanised boat near Katchatheevu, when they were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel.
The Lankan Navy arrested them for fishing in their territorial waters after crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and taken to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Mr Stalin, in a Demi-Official letter to Dr Jaishankar urged him to ensure the safe repatriation of the apprehended fishermen and their fishing boat and to initiate proactive
diplomatic engagement with the Sri Lankan authorities in the handling of fishing-related issues.
"I wish to draw your urgent attention to a matter of grave concern affecting the livelihood and
safety of Indian fishermen, particularly those from Tamil Nadu" he said.
"It has been reported that the Sri Lankan authorities have apprehended a mechanised fishing
boat along with eight fishermen from Rameswaram today", the Chief Minister pointed out.
Observing that such incidents lead to loss of boats and equipment, prolonged detentions, and
exact a heavy psychological toll on the affected families, Mr Stalin sought the EAM's early
intervention to ensure the safe repatriation of the apprehended fishermen and their boat.
"With the annual fishing ban period now concluded and the season having just resumed, our fishermen have returned to sea with hopes of earning a livelihood", he noted.
"Considering that the fishing season has just begun, I urge the Ministry to initiate proactive
diplomatic engagement with the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure restraint and mutual
understanding in the handling of fishing-related issues", Mr Stalin added.
PMK Working President and former Union Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss strongly condemned
the highhandedness of the Lankan Navy in arresting the eight TN fishermen and urged Mr Stalin
to personally meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Ministers to exert pressure on them
to prevent recurrence of such incidents and ensure their safe release.
In a statement here, he said the fishermen have started venturing into the sea from June 15 after
the expiry of the 61-day annual ban period.
Stating that the fishermen would have ventured into the sea for fishing only on a couple of occasions, he said within this two weeks the TN fishermen were subjected to attacks by sea pirates and now the arrest by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Dr Anbumani also said the Chief Minister should not stop with merely writing letters to the Centre seeking their release whenever such incidents took place and instead exert pressure on the Union
government to devise a plan to ensure safe fishing by the fishermen in their traditional waters.

Embassy Clarifies Statement on IAF Role in Operation Sindoor, Calls Remarks Misrepresented
The Indian Embassy in Indonesia issued an explanation on Sunday in response to reports about remarks made by its Defence Attache, Navy Captain Shiv Kumar, in relation to Indian Air Force losses during Operation Sindoor. The Embassy said that the captain's comments were taken in a different context, and misinterpreted by media. In a statement published on X the embassy emphasized the fact that the speech given by Captain Kumar during a recent seminar was misinterpreted. "We have read media reports on a speech given by the Defence Attache at a seminar. The remarks were misquoted and media reports reflect a misrepresentation of the purpose and tenor of the presentation given by the guest speaker" The embassy stated. The statement further stated that the presentation was a demonstration of the fact of India's Indian Armed Forces operates under civilian leadership, which is different from many other countries that are in this region. The statement also clarified that the goal for Operation Sindoor was to target the terrorist infrastructure, and that India's response was non-escalatory. IAF lost "some aircraft" in Operation Sindoor: Indian Navy Captain Shiv Kumar In a speech on June 10 the India's Defence Attaché to Indonesia, Captain Shiv Kumar from the Indian Navy, disclosed that the Indian Air Force (IAF) suffered losses of "some planes" within Operation Sindoor, the May 7 strike targeting the terror-related sites of Pakistan and the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The loss, he said, resulted from the political leadership had directed the military not to strike Pakistani military infrastructures or Indian Air Force during the first strike. "Only because of the restraining order that the political leadership has placed on them to not take on the military establishment, or their air defenses," Captain Kumar said explaining the reason the reason why the IAF lost fighter jets. In addition, he said that after these defeats following these losses, the Indian military redesigned their strategies. "We focused on the military facilities... initially, we got rid of air defences of the enemy, then... all of our attacks could be easily fought by using BrahMos rockets" He added.

'No Wonder Govt Ducking Our Special Session Demand': Congress Asks For Clarity After Defence Attache's Remarks
'This is a direct indictment of the Modi Government, particularly Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. No wonder they are ducking our demand for a Special Session of Parliament like the plague,' Pawan Khera has posted on X. Representative image. In this image via PIB, Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt General Rajiv Ghai with Air Marshal AK Bharti, Vice Admiral AN Pramod and Major General SS Sharda during a press conference on 'Operation Sindoor', in New Delhi, Sunday, May 11, 2025. Photo: Via PTI. New Delhi: A day after The Wire reported that India's defence attache to Indonesia had said early in June that the Indian Air Force lost fighter jets to Pakistan on the night of May 7 during its targeting of Pakistan's terror-linked sites 'only because of the constraint given by the political leadership to not attack the military establishment or their air defences," India's opposition party, Congress, has asked for clarity on this crucial point. On June 10, Captain (Indian Navy) Shiv Kumar acknowledged at a seminar in Indonesia that even though he 'may not agree (with an earlier Indonesian speaker's claim) that we lost so many aircraft, but I do agree we did lose some aircraft.' While the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, released a statement saying Captain Kumar's remarks were taken 'out of context," there has been no official word on the matter. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, had earlier said that the real issue was not the number of jets lost, but why they were lost. Congress leader Pawan Khera noted on X that the government has misled the nation from the start in its secrecy over Operation Sindoor. The Modi government has misled the nation from the start - failing to disclose the aircraft losses during Operation Sindoor. There were oblique references to losses in air combat on 6/7 May, during a briefing by the DG Air Ops (Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti) when he said - 'we are in a combat situation and losses are a part of combat.' Then, it was left to Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan to make the first official admission of our attrition in the air while speaking to Bloomberg TV on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. And now, in another shocking revelation by Capt. Shiv Kumar, it has emerged that the Indian Air Force lost fighter jets to Pakistan on the night of May 7, 2025 during its targeting of Pakistan's terror-linked sites 'only because of the constraint given by the political leadership.' This is a direct indictment of the Modi Government, particularly Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. No wonder they are ducking our demand for a Special Session of Parliament like the plague. They know they've compromised national security, and they're terrified of what the Congress Party will expose before the people of India. Another senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said: First the Chief of Defence Staff makes important revelations in Singapore. Then a senior defence official follows up from Indonesia. But why is the PM refusing to preside over an all-party meeting and take the Opposition into confidence? Why has the demand for a special session of Parliament been rejected? The party's youth leader Srinivas B.V. and its official account wrote that Modi must answer "serious questions": The Indian Air Force lost fighter jets on the night of May 7, 2025, while targeting Pakistani terror infrastructure—'only because of constraints given by the political leadership". These are the words of India's defence attaché to Indonesia, Captain (Indian Navy) Shiv Kumar, who acknowledged the loss of India's fighter jets at a seminar in Indonesia last month. Earlier, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Anil Chauhan had also acknowledged the loss of Indian fighter jets during the Operation Sindoor. There are several unanswered questions related to the untimely ceasefire—especially when India actually had an upper hand in the escalation. Prime Minister Modi must answer these very serious questions: 👉Why is the Prime Minister refusing to convene an all-party meeting under his leadership to inform the Opposition about the truth? 👉Why was the demand to call a special session of Parliament on this issue been rejected? 👉What are PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar hiding from the nation?
