Glennon Brothers opens new €21m timber-frame plant in Scotland targeting lucrative home-building market
The family-owned company's latest investment in Scotland brings the total amount of money it has put into the country to over £80m. Glennon Brothers employs 340 people directly across four operations in the Scottish market.
The £18m investment will be ploughed into Glennon Brothers' Alexanders Timber Design business, which it acquired in 2009. The new timber-frame factory is based in Irvine, and will utilise advanced technology and design systems to deliver homes made from Scottish timber.
The factory, which has created 42 jobs, will serve the Scottish market. Like Ireland, Scotland also has an urgent need to build and construct new homes.
Speaking with the Sunday Independent, Mike Glennon, joint managing director of the business alongside Pat Glennon, said the factory had the capacity for 2,500 homes a year.
Glennon said the group has a timber-frame business in Ireland called Dempsey Timber Engineering. He said Glennon Brothers is investing in that part of the business, but it won't be on the same scale as seen in Scotland.
"We are committed to exploring that,' he said. 'Our main route to market in Ireland is via the traditional build from the builders providers.
"There is no doubt that with the pressure on climate change and greenhouse-gas emissions, it is going to mean more timber being used in traditional build or timber frame in Ireland.'
Glennon would not be drawn on how much he plans to invest in Dempsey Timber Engineering. He said the business had a turnover last year of €330m.

Gamechanger new budget train line to launch from London next year
A NEW direct train service between a central Scottish city and London is due to launch as early as spring 2026. Lumo, which is part of FirstGroup, will run four return services a day to Stirling in Scotland, with the exception of Sundays, where there will be three. Currently, the Lumo brand runs on the East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and Edinburgh.
