Kane Williamson again turns down a central contract with New Zealand Cricket
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Ex-captain Kane Williamson has again rejected a central contract with New Zealand Cricket and likely will miss the Black Caps two test tour to Zimbabwe next month.
Williamson also decided not to accept a central contract last year, to leave himself free to play in Twenty20 and other leagues around the world. He instead signed a casual contract last year and still played in nine of New Zealand's 13 tests in 2024, scoring more than 1,000 runs.
Williamson was absent from the list of 20 contracted players released by New Zealand Cricket on Tuesday, along with Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Lockie Ferguson who also are playing in T20 leagues overseas. He is expected again to sign a casual contract.
Allrounders Muhammad Abbas and Zak Foulkes, wicketkeeper Mitch Hay and spinner Adi Ashok are contracted for the first time in the absence of Tim Southee, who has retired, Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel and Josh Clarkson.
Williamson currently is playing for Middlesex in the English County Championship and T20 Blast and for the London Spirit in The Hundred. He is expected to have county commitments while New Zealand plays Zimbabwe in late July and early August.
In a news conference in London last month, Williamson said that his future on a casual contract is 'just a work in progress and New Zealand Cricket have been great with working with that and I've been fortunate throughout.'
The 20 contracted players were ranked on domestic and international performances over the past year.
'The contracts with Mitch, Muhammad, Adi and Zak reflect the incredible talent coming through our system,' New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink said.
'These players have shown they can compete at the highest level and their hunger to represent the Black Caps is exciting. We're thrilled to see this group drive our team forward.'

McDavid and Draisaitl put Oilers on their backs to beat Panthers and win Stanley Cup Final Game 1
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — When the Edmonton Oilers needed a spark to open the Stanley Cup Final, Leon Draisaitl scored just more than a minute in. When they needed the tying goal after falling behind to the defending champion Florida Panthers, Connor McDavid delivered the perfect pass. And when Game 1 was threatening to drag into a second overtime, McDavid found Draisaitl for the winner. Draisaitl and McDavid took over Wednesday night when it mattered most, delivering a series-opening 4-3 victory that put them three wins from the championship they've been working toward for a decade. 'They don't take many nights off, that's for sure,' teammate Brett Kulak said. "They usually are our top guys every single night, and the bigger the stage the better they get.' Playing through pain, Draisaitl did not score a goal in the final last year, when Edmonton lost the first three games, got back even and dropped a heartbreaker in Game 7 to fall short. Healthier now than during that run, he needed only 66 seconds to get on the board. 'There's maybe nobody better,' McDavid said. An MVP finalist from a dominant regular season, Draisaitl was one of the best players on the ice all game and finished it with a power-play goal 19:29 into OT. 'He's a top-three player in the world,' Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm said. 'He just looks very confident, very comfortable and he's doing his thing.' So was McDavid, who fed Ekholm for the equalizer with 13:27 left in regulation. 'I've seen them do it many times,' goaltender Stuart Skinner said. 'Hopefully I'm able to see them do it a lot more.'

NBA execs believe Zion Williamson's trade value has tanked to a new low
Seemingly from the moment he was selected first overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, there has been some semblance of trade rumors involving Zion Williamson. Yet, those rumors have never materialized into an actual deal. Is this the offseason where the Pelicans are finally willing to listen to offers for their face of the franchise? That remains to be seen, but some would suggest the Pelicans would be dealing the two-time All-Star at a bad time. Advertisement Not only was he limited to just 30 games this past season due to a back injury, now the soon-to-be 25-year-old has been accused of rape and domestic violence. In other words, teams may not want anything to do with the superstar talent. So it comes as no surprise to see Shamit Dua's report that Williamson's trade value is now at a new all-time low. 'There seems to be this general idea of like you kind of saw it with with like Derrick Rose and Kristaps Porzingis that like there will be teams that do not necessarily care about the reputation provided they have enough general information to know that this is going to get settled out of court and the allegations won't stick. There will be teams who do not care and but those teams who do not care need to be sufficiently desperate one and two they're not going to give you anything of value. So you're going to get really bad contracts and likely no picks. But if you do get a pick, it's a late pick. So an example would be Andrew Wiggins and Duncan Robinson for Zion and some small salary just to kind of make it even.' After the latest allegations, anything is possible.
