Automakers focus on the global market, chide the US over tariffs at Shanghai's auto show

Booths of big Chinese, German and Japanese automakers were bustling at Shanghai's auto show this week as the industry kept its focus on a wider global market not subject to steep U.S. tariffs on imports of cars and auto parts.
Signs are that U.S. President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on auto imports is causing companies to recalibrate their strategies, and in some cases find new opportunities.
"When governments up above are at odds, it's going to impact the businesses down below," Ma Lihua, general manager at Soling, a Chinese maker of domain control units and other electronics used in such things as rearview camera displays.
Soling, headquartered in Shanghai, counts Ford Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and many other top tier global and Chinese automakers among its customers. It's also setting up a manufacturing base in Vietnam, whose local EV maker VinFast has ambitions to become Southeast Asia's leading automaker.
Many of the dozens of auto parts and components companies exhibiting at the Shanghai auto show have operations spanning both the Chinese and world markets.
Metal components maker Gestamp, a supplier of chassis, battery boxes and other key auto parts, has suffered from a slowdown in the U.S. and western European markets but is expanding in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
The tariffs are now an added complication, as automakers watch to see what comes.
"In the past, supply chains usually would run like Swiss clockwork, but now it's the opposite," said Ernesto Barcelo, chief ESG officer for metal components maker Gestamp, said of the uncertainty now dominating the market.
"The lack of stability now, it's something very ... fluffy," Barcelo said.
A fundamental criteria for investing in any market is political stability, Wei Jianjun, chairman of Great Wall Motor Co., told reporters when asked about his company's plans to expand manufacturing overseas. That applies to countries like Hungary, where the company has not yet decided on whether to build a factory, he said, but also to the United States under Trump.
"If a country is not politically stable, it's very risky," said Wei, who also goes by the name Jack Wey.
With U.S. tariffs so high, Great Wall can focus elsewhere, such as on trade between China and Europe, which is bound to grow, he said. He didn't address the issue of the tariffs of up 45.3% that the EU has imposed on electric vehicles made in China.
Tianshu Xin, CEO of Leapmotor International, a joint venture of Stellantis and China's Leapmotor, said the U.S. market wasn't its first focus.
Now, "we want to monitor the regulatory environment, and also customer preferences are slightly different compared with other markets," Xin said.
Japan's Nissan plans to launch 10 new EVs in China by 2027, nine of them its own brand, and to spend an extra $1.4 billion by the end of 2026 on its expansion there. In the U.S. it has the option to ramp up its spare capacity to make up for reduced imports due to the tariffs.
"Some doors have been shut, but others have been opened," Ma said. "But any plan you make you will change it very quickly. The market changes very quickly."
Apart from higher tariffs, automakers and suppliers also must contend with national security restrictions that are an increasingly important factor in auto electronics.
Wuhan Kotei Informatics, which provides software for autonomous driving, adapted its business model to cope with sanctions. Now the company based in central China's Wuhan acts as a consultant and allows foreign customers to adapt software to local requirements, said Ye Xiongfei, general manager for the company's autonomous driving division.
"It's like I teach you how to walk if you don't know how to walk, and I will help you walk if you aren't able to walk," Ye said.
Some restrictions on technology are understandable, but too many "will hurt the innovation of the U.S. itself, hindering the speed of the development of their supply chains if it tries to only use local companies," he said.
Some attending the show said they believe that ultimately Trump will end up softening his stance.
"Trump is a businessman and he hopes to boost the U.S. economy by imposing tariffs on other countries, but I do believe those measures are temporary," said Yang Jingdi, assistant to the CEO of LvXiang Automobile Parts Co., which makes electronics including rearview mirrors and pumps.
"We'll wait and see," he said. "China has full and abundant supply chains and it is the U.S. that won't hold on if the tariff measures from both sides remain unchanged."
AOD Technology, which makes domain control units that process various commands such as opening doors and controlling running boards on SUVs, was displaying a bare-bones version of Tesla's Cybertruck equipped with its devices - evidence of its ambition to eventually sell to the EV maker.
It might not be the best time to be planning on selling such components to a U.S. automaker for production in America, Claire Deng, a senior sales manager, conceded.
But she said AOD, based in south China's Zhongshan, had bought the Cybertruck as part of a process that can take years, developing what's needed to become a supplier.
"Who knows what will happen," she said. "We want to be ready."

In a relief to Japanese automobile company Yamaha, the Bombay High Court has set aside an order refusing it a trademark similar to one already registered by Honda Motor Company and directed the registrar, Trade Marks, to adjudicate the issue afresh. A bench of Justice Manish Pitale on June 13 said while a bare perusal of the two trademarks - Yamaha's WR and Honda's WR-V - may cause confusion in the minds of the public, the authority ought to have considered the case as exceptional circumstances and issued an advertisement seeking objections from the public before rejecting Yamaha's application. The court stated the authority, in its "cryptic" order, completely ignored the claim of Yamaha's international reputation while refusing the application and the fact that the company has been using the WR trademark internationally since 1990. Justice Pitale said the authority could have passed a "detailed and well-reasoned order". Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki Kaisha had moved the high court, challenging a May 2021 order by the registrar/examiner of Trade Marks, refusing the company's application for registration of trademark 'WR'. The authority had said that there was a likelihood of confusion in the mind of the public between the trademark of Yamaha, for which registration was sought, and a similar trademark already on the register. The registrar had cited the trademark of Honda Motor Company Ltd - WR-V - registered in the same category as a conflicting mark. Justice Pitale, in the order, said on a bare perusal of the two marks - 'WR' of Yamaha and 'WR-V' of Honda - it was unable to accept Yamaha's contention that there is no possibility of confusion in the mind of the public. It is to be noted that the cited mark WR-V is registered in the same class 12, which includes motorcycles, the court said. "Therefore, invoking Section 11(1) of the Trade Marks Act , on the part of the respondent (Registrar/Examiner of Trade Marks), cannot be said to be misplaced," it noted. Justice Pitale said Yamaha has failed to demonstrate how this section, which pertains to similarity to a particular trademark leading to confusion in the mind of the public, cannot be invoked. The court, however, noted that it was incumbent on the authority to consider Yamaha's contention that it has been using the 'WR' trademark internationally since 1990. "This could be a situation creating special circumstances in favour of the petitioner (Yamaha)," it said. Justice Pitale said it was not an unknown phenomenon that identical or similar trademarks could exist on the register. The court quashed the order passed by the registrar/examiner of Trade Marks rejecting Yamaha's application for the 'WR' trademark. It directed the authority to advertise the application of the petitioner before acceptance as per provisions of the Trade Marks Act and thereafter proceed in accordance with the law. Under section 20(1) of the Trade Marks Act, the authority can advertise the application seeking objections from the public before accepting the application. The registrar opposed Yamaha's plea in court and reiterated that its trademark WR was not distinguishable from the cited WR-V, and hence, there was a likelihood of confusion in people's minds. Yamaha, in its plea, however, contended that its trademark 'WR' was in the context of its motorcycle and the trademark WR-V of the Honda Motor Company Limited was in the context of its car. It stated that the two have concurrently existed over various international jurisdictions. The company pointed out that it adopted the trademark 'WR' in August 1990 for two-wheeler and three-wheeler products, parts and accessories, has sold these products in 131 countries since 1999 and was selling them in at least 62 countries. The company intended to launch its WR range of motorcycles in India and had hence filed its application for registration of the trademark WR in 2018. It submitted to the court that the registrar passed the order rejecting its application in a mechanical manner without properly applying its mind.

New Delhi: As the armed conflict between Iran and Israel threatens to disrupt trade routes across West Asia, the government will talk to exporters to assess the impact and chart a response, three officials aware of the development told Mint. The discussions will be aimed at safeguarding India's exports to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Israel, along with major European markets, the officials said on the condition of anonymity. The conflict has escalated concerns over the safety of cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, a critical maritime corridor for Indian exports. Shipping delays, rising freight charges, and limited insurance coverage are already being flagged by exporters and trade bodies, they said. 'The discussion will be centred around finding a way out of the crisis and ensuring that trade flows are preserved to the extent possible." Export promotion councils, including those representing engineering goods, basmati rice, textiles, and pharmaceuticals, have raised an alarm. 'The geopolitical tensions will have a major impact on India's export-oriented trade to Europe and West Asia, as the Red Sea is a key route," said Arun Kumar Garodia, former chairman of the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC). 'The conflict will force shipments to take alternate, longer routes via the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), adding to the cost burden on traders and importers," he said. 'This disruption is likely to affect India's overall trade performance, which may be reflected in the coming months' export data." For trade promotion bodies, the key concern is the 50% rise in shipment costs just days after the escalation began, and these are anticipated to increase even more after 1 July, the second official quoted earlier said. Basmati exporters have raised concerns over growing uncertainty in the Iranian market, one of India's top destinations for the commodity. With consignments lying at Indian ports and many shipments in transit, exporters fear that any delay could cost them the critical mid-June to mid-July delivery window, before Iran begins harvesting its domestic rice crop. 'Iran typically imposes a seasonal import ban by mid-July to protect local farmers. If tensions persist, we could miss the shipment window entirely," said Satish Goel, president of the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA). India's rice exports to Iran rose to $757.30 million in FY25 from $689.80 million a year earlier, accounting for nearly 76% of India's total agricultural shipments to the country. Iran alone buys around one million tonnes of Indian basmati rice annually, or about 12% of India's total basmati exports, which stood at $5.94 billion in FY25. 'We are in a Catch-22 situation. With tensions escalating, many exporters have put their shipments on hold, even though consignments are already lying at the ports," Goel said. 'If the situation doesn't stabilise soon, exporters could end up bearing heavy losses." According to exporters, some ships in transit may be forced to turn back if the conflict drags on, while insurance remains another sticking point. Several other Gulf nations and nearby economies may face trade disruptions if shipping lanes become inaccessible or unsafe. The UAE, one of India's largest trading partners, could face delays in receiving food items, textiles and engineering goods. Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, and Kuwait are similarly vulnerable due to their dependence on maritime imports, the official said. 'The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict is expected to significantly impact India's trade with Europe, given that much of the cargo to the continent transits through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal," said S. Ramakrishna, former chairman and now advisor of the Federation of Freight Forwarders' Associations in India (FFFAI). India's exports to Europe stayed almost unchanged over the previous year at $98.34 billion in FY25, according to official trade data. Israel, which imports high-value Indian goods like pharmaceuticals and machinery, may also experience setbacks in port operations and air cargo services if the situation escalates.
