Student activists say two arrested under Sedition Act after Anwar caricature burned at Sabah rally
KOTA KINABALU, June 24 — Two student activists linked to last weekend's Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally were allegedly arrested today under the Sedition Act, following backlash over the burning of a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Student activist Qistina Qaisara said in a WhatsApp message to reporters that Muhammad Fadhil Kasim and Aliff Danial Badrul Akmal Hisham were detained after arriving at the Sabah police headquarters in Kepayan.
'Fadhil was called in by police to assist with a forensic investigation into the report that their car had been splashed with acid,' she said.
'But when they arrived, both Fadhil and Aliff were immediately arrested under the Sedition Act. Their lawyers had not yet arrived,' she added.
Qistina claimed the arrest was aggressive and said they had video recordings of the incident.
Yesterday, Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said some of the students involved in the rally were being investigated for allegedly violating the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
He said police had opened three investigation papers covering nine potential offences, including incitement involving race, religion and royalty (3Rs), carrying flammable materials, and open burning.
The student-led rally, held in the city centre, was largely peaceful until the burning of the caricature, which drew condemnation from several quarters.

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 25 — The death of a female teacher, Lo Kwan Fong, whose body was found at her home in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, Iskandar Puteri, on June 13, is believed to have no criminal elements involving illegal moneylending syndicates or loan sharks. Iskandar Puteri police chief ACP M. Kumarasan said although the 39-year-old victim had previously borrowed RM20,000 from a loan shark, she had fully settled the debt. He said preliminary police investigations also found that there were no incidents of paint splashing or threats against the victim. 'The deceased had previously lodged a police report, which was investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951. However, after clearing all her debts, there were no further police reports. 'Neighbours also confirmed that no loan sharks had come to throw paint at her house,' he told a press conference at the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters today. He said the police had checked with the National Registration Department (JPN) and confirmed that she was an only child and her parents had already passed away. To date, her remains have yet to be claimed by her next of kin. 'We will discuss this further with the hospital. After two weeks, the body will be released to Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) for them to appoint a private funeral service. 'We were informed that she has an aunt in Singapore, but we still do not have further information about her. Several parents of her students have expressed their wish to help with the funeral,' he said. Earlier, the media reported that the teacher was found dead at home after neighbours noticed a foul smell and reported the matter to Nusa Bestari police station. Investigations revealed that the woman, who lived alone, was believed to have died about a month before her body was discovered. Man fined for deliberate crash, reckless driving in viral Johor Hilux incident
JOHOR BARU, June 25 — A 50-year-old unemployed man was fined RM13,000 after pleading guilty in two Magistrates' Courts here today to charges of deliberately ramming a Toyota Hilux into a Perodua Axia and driving dangerously last Sunday. The accused, Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah, was fined after admitting to the charges read out by the court interpreter before Magistrates Atifah Hazimah Wahab and Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid. The court also ordered him to serve 18 months in prison if he fails to pay the fine and endorsed his driving licence. Before Magistrate Atifah Hazimah, Muhammad Firdaus was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief causing damage. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of five years, a fine, or both, upon conviction. He was accused of ramming a Toyota Hilux into a black Perodua Axia owned by a 63-year-old man, resulting in damages amounting to RM15,300. In a separate hearing before Magistrate Nur Fatin, he was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving, which carries a fine of up to RM10,000 and a maximum jail term of 12 months, along with mandatory endorsement of the driving licence. The offences were committed at Susur 6, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, at 3.10pm last Sunday. The accused, in tears, expressed remorse and promised not to repeat his actions, pleading for leniency as he is unemployed and supports a wife and seven children. Deputy public prosecutors Nik Noratini Nik Azman and Amirah Tasnim Saleh urged for a proportionate sentence, citing the losses suffered by the victim and the public interest generated by the case. For the mischief charge, Muhammad Firdaus was fined RM7,500 or 12 months in prison, while the dangerous driving charge resulted in a RM5,500 fine or six months in prison. His driving licence was also endorsed. According to the facts of the case, the victim lodged a police report claiming the accused had intentionally damaged his Perodua Axia by ramming into the rear once and the front twice before fleeing. Police arrested Muhammad Firdaus at Jalan Langkasuka in Larkin at 6.30pm yesterday, acting on information and a viral dashcam video showing the deliberate act. The widely circulated footage captured the accused's actions, sparking public outrage.

Justice for judges — Past presidents of Malaysian Bar
JUNE 25 — In less than a week, the Judiciary will bid farewell to one of its most distinguished. The first woman Chief Justice of Malaysia, Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, has reinvigorated the Judiciary by leading the third branch of government with integrity, intellect, courage, and dignity. She leaves on 1 st July 2025. Two other Federal Court Judges who are retiring soon also deserve mention: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abang Iskandar bin Abang Hashim and Tan Sri Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan. Each of them has demonstrated the sterling qualities that make a Judge of the Federal Court the crème de la crème of Judges. It is Judges of the ilk of the three mentioned, who have propelled the Malaysian Judiciary to international recognition and repute, and have made our Judiciary one of the most respected. Recent international surveys and reports testify to this. We should be proud of this monumental achievement. It is thus utterly mystifying why these three outstanding Judges appear to have been singled out to NOT receive the six-month extension under Article 125 of the Federal Constitution. That, too, at a time when we are short of senior and experienced Judges. Why the exclusion, when it is undeniable that they have acquitted themselves in the best traditions of the Bench? One only has to read their judgments to appreciate why we are incredulous, and believe that their non-extension is a profound mistake. The concern is also the negative perceptions that this failure to extend their tenure may give rise to. The Judiciary, as the third branch of government, is equal in status to the other two — Parliament and the Executive. Equal must mean equal, regardless of expediencies. — Pexels pic There is a perception that this is retribution for their having decided cases in a particular way not in line with the wishes of the powersthat be. There is also a perception that this is intended to be a chilling message to other Judges to 'toe the line'. Yet others believe it is because certain political interests must be served in return for patronage or support. Rightly or wrongly, these perceptions strike at the foundation of the Judiciary, and erode the independence of the Judiciary. Further, the incessant delays in making appointments to the Judiciary and, now, in deciding on a simple matter such as an extension, breed unnecessary speculation and uncertainty in the Judiciary and in the minds of the public. Conclusion Much is left to be desired in this unacceptable treatment of the Judges. The Judiciary, as the third branch of government, is equal in status to the other two — Parliament and the Executive. Equal must mean equal, regardless of expediencies. A Government that came into power with the support of the people for its solemn promise of building strong and independent institutions and checks and balances, will lose that trust and support if the Judiciary is undermined. We urge the Government not to allow any backsliding in preserving, promoting and protecting the independence of the Judiciary, as this would hurl us into a past that Malaysians would rather forget.
