Red Sox rumors: Alex Cora's job status amid ‘sloppy, mediocre' season

Yahoo19 hours ago

The post Red Sox rumors: Alex Cora's job status amid 'sloppy, mediocre' season appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The Boston Red Sox had high hopes for their 2025 campaign, but to this point, they have been one of the most disappointing teams in the league. As a result, fans everywhere are looking for someone to blame, and manager Alex Cora has taken his fair share of heat. While calls for his job have begun to grow, it doesn't sound like he's in danger of losing his job anytime soon.

Cora has been the Red Sox manager since 2018, although he did get fired for the 2020 season, only to get hired after his suspension for his role in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal ended. Having led the team to a World Series championship back in 2018, Cora has built a lot of good will for himself in Boston, and while the team has looked awful through the first two-plus months of the season, he's not on the hot seat for the time being.
'The Boston Red Sox may be playing sloppy and mediocre baseball, but manager Alex Cora's job is safe,' Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported.

Not much has gone right for Boston this season, and it's created a series of issues for Cora in the dugout. The Rafael Devers position drama is one thing, but they have dealt with a ton of injuries, and several key contributors have not managed to meet expectations to this point, which is why they have a 31-35 record to this point.

The Red Sox did pick up a big 10-7 victory over their longtime rival, the New York Yankees, on Saturday night, giving them a shot to pick up a series victory on Sunday. They will look to hand the American League East leading Yankees a tough loss when they return to action at Yankee Stadium, with first pitch for this clash being scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Dodgers' Mookie Betts Admits Reason for 'Doubt' as Slump Persists

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers had retained their lead in the National League West division after taking the series from their closest rival, the San Diego Padres, on Wednesday. Though the pitching staff has been snakebit by injuries, the offense has remained elite all season. And that's even as one of LA's most dependable hitters, Mookie Betts, suffers a harsh season so far. Betts' campaign kicked off with a stomach bug that forced him to miss the season opener in Japan and ultimately caused him to lose a significant amount of weight. Since making his season debut, Betts has been working to master the shortstop position and suffered a fractured toe. It seems the ongoing tribulations have taken a toll on his offense. Betts has slashed .269/.349/.417 in the first 242 at-bats so far for the Dodgers, marking significant dips compared to his career averages across the board. (Photo by) Petersen/Getty Though there are clear external reasons for the slump, Betts acknowledged that some doubt about his ability to recapture his previous form has creeped in. "Yeah, definitely there's doubt," Betts told Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register. "The game is moving and if you don't keep moving with it you'll get left behind. Look, man — I've never been the fastest on the field, I've never been the biggest on the field, I've never been the strongest on the field. I am literally average across the board in all facets of the game. I have to rely on a lot of things in my process to be perfect. That's just the way it is." As Betts re-examines his mechanics in an attempt to put the slump behind him, there are signs he has perfected that process once again. He logged a .351 batting average and a .901 OPS in the first nine games since returning from his toe injury. That sample size might be a bit too small to say whether Betts has returned to his All-Star level, but he knows there is only one thing he can really control even as doubts about his performance surface. "I don't have a superpower to fall back on," he told Plunkett. "So I feel like mine is my process and my hard work. That's really the only thing I can control." As the Dodgers look for a repeat World Series championship, they'll be hoping their star player has found a process that will turn his season around. MLB rumors: Pair of top insiders detail why a 2026 MLB lockout is guaranteed

There have been rumors for months that MLB could be headed to a lockout next year. Well, a pair of notable insiders claimed this week that the scenario is guaranteed. MLB is doing very good business currently. With teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees contending for a World Series title, the league is very healthy financially. Earning a record $12.1 billion in revenue last year. However, there is trouble brewing on the horizon. Advertisement Related: MLB games today – Get a look at tonight's MLB schedule With the wealthiest teams going to absurd lengths to improve their rosters, and the poorest doing next to nothing to upgrade their own, there are many teams in the middle unhappy with the state of the league. It is why there have been rumors that there will be a lockout once the current collective bargaining agreement ends next December. It was a topic of conversation on former MLB executive David Samson's 'Nothing Personal' podcast this week. As he asked The Athletic's MLB insider Ken Rosenthal if he also believes the league is headed toward CBA armageddon next year. 'I am guaranteeing a lockout at the end of '26. But are you as certain as I am about that?' Samson asked Rosenthal. Advertisement 'Pretty much yes. And I'm certain about it because the commissioner has already said in an article that a lockout can be a very useful thing,' Rosenthal said. 'The owners' thirst for a salary cap has never been greater. There is a percentage of owners who are willing to shut down the sport to get what they want.' Samson added that all it takes is eight very unhappy owners to force a lockout. And he believes that it won't be hard to find them when the time comes. However, while the wealthiest teams in the league won't be in favor of a salary cap, Rosenthal believes they could align with the lowest spenders, who don't want a salary floor. MLB players are some of the best-paid in professional sports. However, the Dodgers' use of deferrals and the Mets forking over $765 million to Juan Soto have the league hurdling to insane contract numbers. Furthermore, teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Athletics taking revenue sharing money without investing in their clubs is just as big a problem. The league and its players will have some huge issues to figure out when CBA negotiations begin next year. Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Yankees and the Red Sox 'Aaron Judge is currently hitting .3942 and no Yankee has ever hit .400 let alone the last MLB player being Ted Williams in 1941. Judge is ripping this season and hitting .353 this month with nine hits through 10 games. With Red Sox up, then the Angels, Orioles, Reds, and Athletics over the next four series — I see a lot of hits coming for Judge, so I played the +1300 for .400 by the All-Star break and sprinkled +5500 for the season.'
