The Telangana fire department has identified the 17 victims. Eight of them are children, the youngest just one. Four are senior citizens, and five are women.
When a fire erupted in a home near Hyderabad's Charminar, residents rushed in as first responders and started bringing out those trapped inside. One of the residents, identified as Zahir, a bangle seller, shared a heart-wrenching account with NDTV.
Zahir described finding a woman who had desperately hugged her children, trying to shield them from the flames. Tragically, they were all burned beyond recognition in her final embrace. 'We managed to get inside shortly after the fire started. The flames were huge. Inside the room, a woman had hugged the children. She was dead," Zahir said.
According to the information so far, the fire was caused due to an electrical problem and the victims were caught unawares because they were sleeping. Rescue efforts were severely hampered by the building's outdated structure. The century-old shops had rooms constructed above them, with rows of windows that were likely closed at night due to air conditioning.
In the case of a fire, this would lead to a massive build-up of smoke in the small rooms. Another problem is the single, narrow entry point to access the rooms.
'We brought out 13 people. We could not see anything due to the smoke. We pulled down a wall to get inside," Zahir said, adding that most victims burned to death, and smoke choked the others.
The Telangana fire department has identified the 17 victims. Eight of them are children, the youngest just one. Four are senior citizens, and five are women. Only one family member survived because she was out for a walk.
Y Nagi Reddy, director general of Telangana fire services, said that after receiving the information about the blaze at 6:16 AM, 11 fire engines with the required staff were dispatched immediately. The firefighters had to use oxygen masks and breathing apparatus to rescue the people trapped in the building.
He said the fire seems to have started at the electrical mains and then spread to the shops on the ground floor. 'Then the smoke spread to the other floors, a lot of heat was generated in the area," he said, adding that inhaling smoke makes people unconscious, making escape difficult.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his anguish at the loss of life in the Hyderabad building fire. He also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakhs from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of those who lost their lives. Rs 50,000 will be given to those who were injured in the mishap.

How Much Can You Save On Electricity Bill By Raising Your AC Temperature 1°C?

Last Updated: If you're running your AC for 8 hours a day, that small tweak in temperature could save you anywhere between Rs 3 and Rs 5 per day In a move aimed at curbing electricity consumption and promoting energy efficiency, the Centre is considering setting a standard operating temperature for air conditioners. Under the proposed measure, consumers may no longer be able to set their ACs arbitrarily high or low, as authorities prepare to enforce fixed temperature limits in the near future. The policy is rooted in the idea that small changes in thermostat settings can lead to big savings, not just for individual households, but for the national power grid as well. It may sound trivial, but adjusting your AC temperature by just 1 degrees Celsius can have a measurable impact. Lowering the temperature by 1°C can increase power usage by 3-6%, while raising it by the same margin reduces consumption by a similar percentage. In simple terms, if you bump up your AC setting from 24°C to 25°C, you can cut your electricity use by 3-6%. Let's take an example: A 1.5-ton 5-star inverter AC, considered one of the more energy-efficient models, typically consumes around 1 kWh per hour at 24°C. Increasing the setting to 25°C could save you around 0.05 kWh (or 50 watts) per hour. Translating Watts to Wallet If you're running your AC for 8 hours a day, that small tweak in temperature could save you anywhere between Rs 3 and Rs 5 per day, depending on local electricity rates (assumed here at Rs 8 per unit). That adds up to Rs 100-Rs 150 in monthly savings and around Rs 1,200-Rs 2,000 annually. Energy efficiency isn't just about temperature settings. The model and rating of your AC make a significant difference. According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a 5-star rated AC consumes much less power than a lower-rated model. Inverter ACs also adjust compressor speed based on room temperature, offering better performance at lower energy use, especially when paired with moderate thermostat settings. Room insulation, regular maintenance, and complementary use of ceiling fans also help reduce load on air conditioners. Poor insulation forces ACs to work harder, increasing energy draw. Cleaning filters, sealing gaps, and limiting sunlight exposure with curtains or blinds can significantly improve performance. While the government has not yet issued a final directive, the proposal to mandate a fixed AC temperature – possibly around 24°C or 25°C – is part of a larger national effort to manage peak electricity demand. India faces increasing pressure on its grid during summer months, and such micro-level changes in consumption could add up to macro-level relief. The initiative may also encourage manufacturers to pre-program ACs with default settings aligned to government norms. Consumers, however, may still have some flexibility within a defined range. Cobra swallows 1-foot knife in Karnataka, rescuers use scissors to pull it out. Watch

In a shocking incident, a cobra managed to swallow a kitchen knife in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district. According to reports, the incident unfolded when the cobra entered a house in search of food, mistaking the knife for prey. The incident occurred at the residence of Govinda Naik in Hegde Village, located around 4 km from Kumta Taluk's sub-district headquarters, NDTV reported. Snake rescuer Pavan and veterinary assistant Advaith Bhat were called to the scene to help rescue the cobra. A now-viral video shows the rescuers carefully removing the cobra from a sack used to capture it. As the reptile slithers out, the outline of the knife is visible inside its body. The knife was 12 inches long (1 foot) and two inches wide. In another video, the two men are seen carefully working to pull out the knife. While one held the cobra's upper jaw, the other inserted medical scissors to gently open and stabilise its mouth. A second pair of scissors was then used to carefully remove the embedded knife from the snake's throat. Sharing the video on X, Yasir Mushtaq, a journalist, wrote, 'In a rare incident in Hedge Village in #Karnataka's #Karwar,a #Cobra mistakenly swallowed a kitchen knife while searching for prey. #snake rescuer Pavan & veterinary assistant Advaith safely removed the 12-inch #knife using medical tools. The video of the giant snake being rescued from the house emerged on social media. The reports stated that it weighed 6.7 kgs and was released into the Dukra wildlife range in Mayurbhanj. In the same year, in July, rescuers captured a 12-foot-long King Cobra in South Karnataka. The snake was spotted crossing a main road, following which the locals alerted the forest department.
