Dead congressman's social media accounts resurrected to boost former chief of staff's congressional bid

Fox News5 hours ago

Before passing away last month, Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., endorsed Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw, his former chief of staff, to succeed him in Congress — but more than a month after Connolly's death, posts on social media accounts for the late lawmaker were fired back up to promote Walkinson's congressional bid.
"Early voting starts TODAY in VA-11! Before passing, Gerry endorsed @JamesWalkinshaw to carry the torch. Let's honor that legacy and vote for bold leadership that'll fight for us every day," a Tuesday post on the @ElectConnolly X account declared, sharing link to a page on Walkinshaw's campaign website as well as a picture of the two men together.
The bio section of the X account notes that the congressman died on May 21 and explains that "All posts made with the consent of the Connolly family."
The account features a link to gerryconnolly.com, which also highlights Connolly's support for Walkinshaw's bid.
A post backing Walksinshaw also appeared on a Facebook page that is labeled as Connolly's campaign page.
"Early voting starts TODAY in VA-11! This is our first chance to stand up for our workers, our schools, our democracy, and everything Gerry fought for. Before his passing, Gerry endorsed James Walkinshaw to carry on that legacy because he knew James would never stop fighting for us. Make your plan to vote early and bring a friend. Every vote matters," the post declares, providing a link to a page on Walkinshaw's campaign site.
The special election to fill the seat in Virginia's 11th Congressional District is scheduled for Sept. 9, while the related Democratic nominating contest — an "unassembled caucus" — is taking place this week.
Prior to the posts on Tuesday promoting Walkinshaw's bid, the latest posts shared on the two social media accounts had been a Connolly Family statement announcing the death of the lawmaker on May 21.
Shortly after winning re-election in November, Connolly announced that he had esophageal cancer, noting, "A few days ago, I learned I joined the ranks of millions of Americans. I have cancer of the esophagus. It was a surprise because, except for some intermittent abdominal aches and pains, I had no symptoms."
Then in late April, he announced that following "grueling treatments, we've learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned," noting that it would be his final term in office.
The lawmaker had served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2009.

Trump Rips Zohran Mamdani After NYC Primary Triumph: 'Communist Lunatic'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. President Donald Trump unloaded on democratic socialist and New York state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani after Mamdani set off a political earthquake in New York City by defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the city's Democratic primary Tuesday night. The outcome is not yet final—the New York City Board of Elections is expected to release the full results on July 1—but Mamdani is on track to secure the Democratic Party's mayoral nomination. Trump attacked Mamdani on his social media website, Truth Social, while pointing to the likely Democratic nominee's support from progressive lawmakers including New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. "It's finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor," Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday afternoon. "We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart, he's got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!" The president added: "I have an idea for the Democrats to bring them back into 'play.' After years of being left out in the cold, including suffering one of the Greatest Losses in History, the 2024 Presidential Election, the Democrats should nominate Low IQ Candidate, Jasmine Crockett, for President, and AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President, and three High Level Members of the Cabinet – Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!" This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.

More than 1,600 immigrants detained in Southern California this month, DHS says

WASHINGTON — Between June 6 and June 22, immigration enforcement teams arrested 1,618 immigrants for deportation in Los Angeles and surrounding regions of Southern California, according to the Department of Homeland Security. DHS did not respond to requests for information on how many of those arrested had criminal histories and a breakdown of those convictions. As immigration arrests have occurred across Southern California, demonstrators have protested the federal government's actions and bystanders have sometimes confronted immigration officers or videotaped their actions. Between June 6 and June 22, 787 people have been arrested for assault, obstruction and unlawful assembly, a DHS spokesperson said. Figures about the Los Angeles operation released by the White House on June 11 indicated that about one third of those arrested up until that point had prior criminal convictions. The 'area of responsibility' for the Los Angeles field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement includes the Los Angeles metropolitan area and the Central Coast, as well as Orange County to the south, Riverside County to the east and up the coast to San Luis Obispo County. Data from the first days of the Los Angeles enforcement operation show that a majority of those arrested had never been charged with or convicted of a crime. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Monday that 75% of nationwide arrests under the Trump administration have been of immigrants with criminal convictions or pending charges. But data published by Immigration and Customs Enforcement show that figure is lower in recent weeks. Nationally, the number of people arrested without criminal convictions has jumped significantly and many of those are nonviolent offenders, according to nonpublic data obtained by the Cato Institute that covers the period from last Oct. 1, the start of the federal fiscal year, to June 15. The most frequent crimes are immigration and traffic offenses. Serious violent offenders account for just 7% of those in custody, according to Cato. Immigration enforcement officers have recently intensified efforts to deliver on President Trump's promise of mass deportations. In California, that has meant arrests of people in courthouses, on farms and in Home Depot parking lots. But, with a daily goal of 3,000 arrests nationwide, administration officials still complain that agents are failing to arrest enough immigrants. Democrats and immigrant community leaders argue that agents are targeting people indiscriminately. Despite the chaotic nature of the raids and protests in Los Angeles, 1,618 arrests by DHS in southern California over more than two weeks is about 101 arrests per day — a relatively small contribution to the daily nationwide goal. Perhaps the bigger achievement than the arrests themselves, advocates say, is the fear that those actions have stoked. Times staff writer Rachel Uranga contributed to this report.
