Apple's Grand CarPlay Plans Crumble Amid Automaker Pushback

Apple may not be taking over your car's entire dashboard just yet Earlier this month, Apple CarPlay Ultra was revealed as the next major leap for in-car connectivity. Whereas normal CarPlay allows you to handle more basic connectivity and infotainment functions, CarPlay Ultra goes a lot deeper. It offers CarPlay functionality across all display screens, including the gauge cluster area. Although the idea seemed positive at first, a new report from the Financial Times suggests that multiple major automakers are rejecting CarPlay Ultra, with no intention of introducing the functionality in new vehicles. So, why is this happening? Multiple Reasons Behind CarPlay Ultra Hesitancy Source: Apple The report indicates that Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Polestar, and Renault are among the brands that have decided against introducing CarPlay Ultra. All of these brands were part of a list of automakers Apple originally said would use the new software, back in 2022. More recently, Apple said that Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia also committed to implementing Ultra. Automakers like Renault don't want CarPlay Ultra in its cars as the tech allows outside companies to access more vehicle data, while replacing automakers' own controls for features like the climate control. Beyond this apparent intrusion, automakers are also keen to exploit in-car services as a revenue source, offering customers the option of paying for new features, whether long-term or temporarily – that's despite subscription services being widely shunned by drivers. Still, by handing more control over to CarPlay Ultra, this opportunity could be disrupted for carmakers. Source: Apple Renault seems to feel particularly strongly about not implementing CarPlay Ultra, telling Apple: 'Don't try to invade our own systems.' Automakers like Ford and Nissan have seemingly not yet made up their minds about CarPlay Ultra integration. Normal Apple CarPlay To Stick Around Source: Apple While CarPlay Ultra has initiated a heated debate, the use of traditional CarPlay will likely remain. Almost 100% of new cars sold in the USA have Apple CarPlay equipped, and the majority of drivers consider it and/or Android Auto to be essential features. Audi and BMW, for instance, have indicated their continued interest in traditional CarPlay, even if neither has committed to CarPlay Ultra. Apple can't be pleased about this frosty reception to what sounded like a revolutionary in-car experience, but the tech giant remains upbeat. 'We're collaborating closely with automakers to provide the best of iPhone and the best of the car and this work takes time,' said Apple to the Financial Times. If other brands also jump on board and the reception is positive, the likes of Audi and Renault may again backtrack and consider the tech for their models. For now, though, Apple has a tough job on its hands to win over the approval of major automakers. For consumers who want to experience the tech, well, they may have to choose between that and their preferred car brand. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

Family of Greg Monks gather for funeral as mourners donate to children's charity

Greg Monks sadly died after he vanished hours into a stag do in the party resort of Albufeira in the Algarve. A funeral has taken place for a man who was found dead after going missing on a stag do in Portugal. Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, vanished just hours into a stag do with his pals in the Algarve party resort of Albufeira. ‌ The 38-year-old had been missing for a week before Portuguese authorities discovered his body at the bottom of a ravine on Wednesday, June 4. ‌ Police believe Greg became lost while attempting to find his way back to his hotel and tragically fell to his death. His devastated family, including his mum, cousin and girlfriend Nicole, were forced to return home without his body as they waited for repatriation. His family and loved ones gathered at Daldowie Crematorium's West Chapel near Glasgow to say their goodbyes today. The service was also shown in the East Chapel and live-streamed online for those unable to attend in person. Mourners were asked to donate to children's charity Cash for Kids instead of bringing flowers. Those celebrating Greg's life spoke after the service. Sharon Cooke said: "A truly beautiful service, you did Greg proud. All the love in the world to you all." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! His friends and family did him very proud. Rest in peace now Greg." On Monday evening before his funeral, loved ones gathered for an emotional balloon release at Fullarton Park in Glasgow. Attendees brought a blue balloon with a personal message to Greg. ‌ Greg's sister, Jillian Monks, previously spoke to the Daily Record about the agony of losing her brother – but said the family were grateful for some sense of closure. She said: "It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. ‌ "We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send-off he deserves." Greg had travelled to Albufeira for a five-day stag do, where he was due to be a groomsman. However, just hours into the trip he became separated from the group on the strip. The last sighting of him was captured in a quiet residential area around three miles from the main strip. Jillian has urged groups heading abroad to look after one another and stay together. ‌ She said: 'In places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened. 'Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home.' A fundraiser launched during the search – and later used to help with repatriation - has raised more than £34,000, showing just how loved Greg was by all who knew him.

Kia's new app turns your phone into a car insurance black box

Kia's new app essentially turns your phone into a 'black box', providing feedback about your driving and passing on details to car insurance providers, potentially saving you money. Partnering with data analytics firm LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Kia has developed a special 'Driving Insights' feature, which acts a bit like a backseat driver, rating several elements such as your speed, braking and distance travelled to provide an overall safety score. Once rated, users can choose to send this data to insurers and, much like with a traditional black box policy, receive a personalised insurance quote, which can fluctuate depending on how they drive. Advertisement - Article continues below The Head of connected cars at Kia, Olivier Pascal, says the new feature is 'empowering our customers with real-time driving insights while supporting the insurance industry with meaningful, privacy-conscious data, enabling insurance providers to deliver tailored solutions like never before.' This comes at a time where car insurance premiums sit at an average of £757, according to price comparison site, This is the lowest they've been in the past two years, but usage-based insurance policies have the potential to bring down costs even further – or make things more expensive, depending on how you drive. Kia's new app isn't just a way to rate your driving; the Korean firm's new companion app has also combined several features that were previously only available via separate applications, such as accessing warranty information, locking and unlocking the car, and accessing chargepoints via the Kia Charge service. If you download the new app, Kia says existing accounts will be automatically transferred over, meaning you'll only need to sign in once to access all of the features it has to offer. The new Kia App is available to download now on both iOS and Android Devices via the App Store and Google Play Stores respectively.
