Duchess celebrates community spirit in Northamptonshire
A county's "unique history and creative energy" have been celebrated during a whistle-stop royal visit. Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh began a busy day of engagements at Northampton Bike Park, seeing the positive impact the development has had on the local community since it opened in 2022.The park was given a £250,000 investment from Sport England on behalf of the Places to Ride programme.Chris Holmes, chief executive of Northamptonshire Sport, said: "It was a real honour to welcome Her Royal Highness and to share the story of what has been a truly community-powered project."
"This space has been created by and for local people, with the support of national partners to provide a fun, safe and inclusive place for everyone to ride," he said.
The duchess met volunteers, local authority representatives and board members from Northamptonshire Sport - and spoke to pupils from Boothville Primary School.Local riders performed a mountain bike skills demonstration and concluded with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Nick Barr, head of participation at British Cycling, one of the funders of the bike park, said the long term goal of the facility was to achieve a "healthier, happier nation"."Enabling more young people and riders from diverse backgrounds to access the full breadth of the cycling disciplines is central to our long-term strategy," he said.
During the duchess' visit to the county, she also marked the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton and was presented with fire-themed artwork from local schoolchildren at the town's Market Square. She visited areas of the town centre linked to the fire's history, including All Saints Church. The duchess learned about its role in the town's recovery - and the connection to the annual Oak Apple Day commemorations. "This was a truly special day for West Northamptonshire, shining a spotlight on our county's unique history, creative energy," James Saunders Watson Esq, Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, said.
The duchess also met girls from Northampton School rugby team to acknowledge the Women's Rugby World Cup coming to West Northamptonshire this summer. The visit ended at Northampton's historic Guildhall, where the duchess joined community, heritage and voluntary organisations.

Wimbledon increases prize money by seven per cent to £53.5m total pot this year
Wimbledon prize money will increase by seven per cent to a total pot of £53.5million for this summer's Championships. The winners of the men's and women's singles titles will each receive £3million, an increase of more than 11 per cent on 2024, while a main draw spot is worth a minimum of £66,000, up 10 per cent year on year. The All England Club's announcement comes amid growing player demands for a bigger share of grand slam profits. In April, 20 leading players sent a letter to the heads of the four majors calling for greater contributions and discussions were held at a meeting during the French Open. At Wimbledon's pre-tournament media briefing, chair Debbie Jevans said: 'We are absolutely committed to continuing our long-standing commitment to player compensation. 'We're immensely proud of the fact that if you look back 10 years, you can see the increase over that period (of 100 per cent) and seven per cent this year. 'We have listened to the players, we have engaged with the players. Of course we will always listen and discuss with them but the focus on just the prize money at four events, the grand slams, does not get to the heart of what the challenge is with tennis. 'The challenge with tennis is the fact that the players don't have an off season, which they want, they have increasing injuries that they're speaking about and we've always said that we as Wimbledon are willing to engage and talk with the tours to try and find solutions and that door remains open. 'As yet, there hasn't been any proposal to us as to how the tour is able to change its structure. 'There's a bigger picture here but, as a tennis player, they're always going to, I think, ask for more money.' Two big changes at this year's tournament – which starts on June 30 – had previously been announced, with the singles finals moving from 2pm starts on the final weekend to 4pm, while line judges are being replaced by a live electronic calling system. The latter decision follows a move within the wider sport, although the French Open has resisted change and this year's event was again held with line calls decided purely by human officials. Wimbledon's removal of line judges was met with dismay by many and the All England Club revealed around 80 former officials would be employed this year as match assistants, with two on each court offering support to the umpire, while they will also provide back-up, should the electronic system fail. Behind the scenes, Wimbledon's biggest project remains the planned expansion into neighbouring Wimbledon Park, which would add a further 39 grass courts but is currently mired in legal challenges. Although planning permission has been granted, a local protest group has brought a judicial review, which will be heard at the High Court on July 8 and 9 during the second week of the tournament. A hearing into whether there is a statutory trust on the land will be heard in January 2026, further delaying the project, plans for which were first submitted in 2021. Wimbledon, meanwhile, will continue to provide support for Ukrainian players in terms of practice facilities and accommodation.

Major League Cricket 'not a threat' to Hundred now
Major League Cricket (MLC) chief executive Johnny Grave says the tournament should not be seen as a danger to The Hundred any third edition of the United States' franchise league starts on Friday at 02:00 BST when defending champions Washington Freedom face San Francisco emergence caused some uneasiness in English cricket with fears a clash with The Hundred would create a scramble for the best English and overseas relations between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and MLC have improved with both parties keen to work together so the tournaments do not overlap where possible.A number of American investors - including some with interests in MLC - are in the process of finalising deals to acquire stakes in franchise in The Hundred following the ECB sale earlier this year."The likes of England and Australia and India have had complete monopolies and global dominance," Grave told BBC Sport."There's always a bit of emotional threat from anything that's new that could destabilise what's been before."But I think now the relationship and communication with the ECB is great. Certainly, I don't think we [MLC] are a threat to the ECB." Washington Freedom will have Steve Smith, currently playing for Australia in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, available for two games of in the summer Smith will hook up with Welsh Fire for a stint in The Hundred. Freedom are owned by American-Indian IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil, who also agreed a deal to buy a 50% stake in attended an informal meeting of global franchise owners at Lord's last week and is optimistic of an ongoing spirit of cooperation."I'm certainly philosophical around the need to coexist," said Englishman Grave, who previously held senior positions at Surrey and the Professional Cricketers' Association."Particularly with The Hundred and the Caribbean Premier League that exist closely to the window that we currently are in."MLC is really only interested in developing a home audience. ‘I can't see the difference…' – Man Utd fans fume as new 2025/26 kit is released with ‘nod to Old Trafford'
MANCHESTER UNITED have released their home kit for the 2025/26 campaign. The Red Devils announced the release with a dramatic video, showing a giant shirt held aloft inside Old Trafford. 5 5 5 The new strip pays tribute to the Theatre of Dreams, and sees United return to a red and black theme. In a change from last season the iconic Adidas stripes on the arms are black instead of white, as are the cuffs of the sleeves. For some the shirt is strikingly similar to last season, although the 2023/24 kit is perhaps a better comparison given that also bore black stripes. Adidas state the "home kits are crafted with the best of sporting technology, with AEROREADY materials that leave you feeling cool, dry, and comfortable on matchday, whether you're on the pitch or in the stands". They retail for £85 or £90 depending on sleeve length, while the 'authentic' top will set fans back £120 or £130 - the latter is the long sleeve which sold out within hours of being released. Captain Bruno Fernandes featured in the shirt promotion shoot, along with Amad, Patrick Dorgu and Leny Yoro. Some fans feel the jersey is a copycat from last year, with one saying: "I didn't spot a difference w 24/25 Home kit." Another added: "It's the 23/24 kit."
