Israel military says 'currently' launching attacks on several sites in Iran

New Indian Express11 hours ago

TEL AVIV: Israel's military on Saturday said it was "currently" launching attacks on several sites across Iran as it kept up its campaign targeting the Islamic republic's military and nuclear sites.
"We are currently launching attacks on several sites in Iran," military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said in a televised press conference after Iran responded to Israeli strikes with waves of drones and missile barrages.
Earlier, Israel's defense minister warned that 'Tehran will burn' if Iran continues firing missiles, as the two countries traded blows a day after Israel launched a blistering surprise attack on Iranian nuclear and military sites, killing a number of top generals.
Israel's military said the strikes had also killed nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran's nuclear program.
Iran's U.N. ambassador said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded in the attacks.
Iran retaliated by launching waves of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel, where explosions lit the night skies over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and shook buildings.
Speaking after an assessment meeting with the army's chief of staff, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Iran will pay a heavy price for harming Israeli citizens.
"If (Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front — Tehran will burn,' Katz said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that his objective was to eliminate any Iranian threat to Israel, but he also urged Iranians to rise up against their leaders. Israel would welcome the government's overthrow even if it is not actively seeking it.

World of wars and bonfire of G7 vanities

A week is indeed a long time in geopolitics. On Tuesday, the world markets celebrated headlines about a trade deal between China and the US. On Friday, world markets plummeted following Israeli strikes on Iran. Real wars tend to make trade wars look insignificant. This week, the G7, the group of advanced economies, is observing the 50th anniversary of its origin in picturesque Kananaskis in Alberta, at the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The theme, as always, is lofty: international peace and security, global economic stability and growth, digital transition and global challenges. The ground realities mock at the ballyhooed heft of advanced economies to sustain predictability and stability. Global trade is upended, thanks to Donald J Trump's America First tariff policies. Sure, there is a ceasefire on tariffs, a détente with China and talks about talks with other countries. Peace is in pieces. Trump's promise of peace in 24 hours is consigned to the bunker by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The ceasefire-for-hostages deal in Gaza is comatose. Newly 'liberated' Syria is haunted by sectarian killings despite a relief on sanctions—US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned the country is weeks away from an epic civil war. On Wednesday, after US declared the 'end of bombing', the Houthis warned of attacks. This week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu upped the ante as he authorised Israeli forces to attack Iran. With it, Trump's agenda in West Asia—and a possible Nobel honour—was washed off. In a sequence of complex manoeuvres, Israeli forces targeted the leadership of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, nuclear scientists, military units and nuclear facilities. The sequence is instructive. The audacious attacks were executed just before officials from Iran and the US were to meet in Oman over a new nuclear deal. The US president authorised the talks for the new deal and gave a deadline of 60 days; the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six countries including the US took 20 months.

Israeli military attack hits Yemen, reportedly targeting senior Houthi leader

Israeli forces recently carried out a targeted strike in Yemen, in an apparent assassination attempt against a senior figure in the Iran-backed Houthi movement, according to Israeli media. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not officially confirmed the operation, and both Israeli and Houthi officials have so far refrained from making public statements on the Houthis, who control large parts of northern Yemen, have been engaged in a campaign of maritime attacks in the Red Sea since November 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The group is believed to have launched over 100 assaults on commercial vessels traversing one of the world's key shipping TENSIONS BETWEEN ISRAEL AND IRANThe reported strike in Yemen comes as Israel and Iran exchanged fresh hostilities late Saturday, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict. The Israeli military expanded its campaign against Iran with a surprise strike targeting the South Pars gas field, the world's largest, prompting a fierce response from Tehran. Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel, according to Iranian state media, while the IDF confirmed it had intercepted multiple incoming projectiles and was continuing operations against military targets in Tehran. Missile strikes lit up the night skies over Jerusalem and Haifa, where a direct hit on a residential building killed a woman in her 20s and injured at least 13 canceled a scheduled round of nuclear talks with the United States in Oman. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the discussions were impossible amid what he called "barbarous" Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Iran had "seen nothing yet" and hinted at further action. Meanwhile, the White House said President Donald Trump had cautioned Iran against further escalation, offering a diplomatic off-ramp in exchange for a significant rollback of its nuclear program.

NIA cracks down on terror network of Hizb-ut-Tahrir in MP, Rajasthan

Bhopal/Jaipur: NIA on Saturday raided three locations in MP's Bhopal and two in Rajasthan's Jhalawar as part of its probe into a terror conspiracy by the banned radical outfit Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT), which is accused of radicalising Muslim youth and attempting to forge links with global terror networks such as ISIS. The extensive searches were triggered by the data recovered from the mobile phone of Mohsin Khan --- a key conspirator, financier, and recruiter for HuT in India --- who was arrested by NIA in Bhopal last week. The information led to the identification of another suspect in Jhalawar's Manohar Thana town. "Mohsin Khan motivated Muslim youth to spread violence in a bid to overthrow India's democratically elected govt and establish an Islamic state governed by Shariah law through the creation of a Caliphate," said an NIA source. NIA seized digital devices and incriminating materials during coordinated search operations at Aishbagh, Ashoka Garden, and the Shahjahanabad area in Bhopal, as well as a house in Kaji Chowk and a shop near Jama Masjid in Jhalawar. The recovered devices are being sent for forensic analysis to gather further evidence related to the conspiracy. "The case, registered by the NIA as part of its efforts to dismantle various terrorist and radical networks attempting to spread mayhem across the country, relates to HuT's conspiracy to radicalise and recruit vulnerable Muslim youth," NIA said in a release. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP?
