Scammers using fake QR codes on parking meters to con Scots drivers
Trading Standards Scotland issued a warning after recent reported cases of 'quishing' in Perthshire, just weeks after figures revealed a 14-fold increase in the scams in the space of five years.
Scammers are using fake QR codes on parking meters to dupe Scots out of cash across the country, experts have warned.
Trading Standards Scotland issued a warning after reported cases of 'quishing' in Perthshire, just weeks after figures revealed a 14-fold increase in scams linked to the codes designed to be scanned by mobile phones in the space of five years.
The watchdog has also investigated reports of fake barcodes being used in Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and East Lothian council areas.
Victims found fake codes had been stuck on top of legitimate codes on parking meters, directing them to sites aimed at stealing data, installing malware, or tricking users into giving away sensitive information.
The scam comes at a time when organised crime gangs have been identified as being behind a sharp rise in QR frauds.
Trading Standards Scotland said: 'QR codes are commonly used in car parks or at electric car charging points to allow people to pay without using cash. However, in some areas, criminals are sticking their own codes on top of the legitimate ones on parking meters.
'There have been recent reports from Perthshire of stickers with scam QR codes being stuck onto parking meters. The stickers have the logo of parking app RingGo, but lead to a malicious website which is designed to gather customers' payment and personal details.
'Scanning a fake QR code could also allow scammers to access other functions and apps on your phone. In addition, anyone who scans a scam QR code in a car park will not realise that they have not in fact paid for their parking, and so could also end up being fined by the council or owner of the car park.'
In April, the national fraud reporting centre, Action Fraud, received 1,386 reports of people being targeted last year using QR codes, compared with 100 in 2019.
Contactless payment hotspots - like parking meters and restaurant menus - have been reported as common targets.

Over the past five years, Action Fraud received almost 3,000 reports in total.
Katherine Hart, lead officer at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, said the reporting centre had seen 'huge amounts lost this way', with people's life savings being drained by finance criminals.
Hart said quishing was significantly under-reported and now presented a 'huge challenge' to authorities around the world.
Trading Standards Scotland said most councils don't use QR codes on their parking meters and have issued advice on how to avoid the scam.
The RAC advises to avoid using the codes altogether when making a payment at a council-owned car park, electric vehicle charge points and private car parks, instead using an official app downloaded from your smartphone's app store.
If you do decide to use the QR code, check to see if it has been stuck over another code.
Review the preview of the QR code's URL before opening it to see if it appears legitimate.
Make sure the website uses HTTPS rather than HTTP, doesn't have obvious misspellings and has a trusted domain.
If you are worried that you have made a payment to a scam website after scanning a QR code, check your bank transactions and contact your bank.
Victims are urged to contact the police and report incidents to National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Two men in court over gangland 'firebomb' attack and gun found in Edinburgh
Liam McDermid, Denin Mackenzie appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff court while a third man was reported to the Procurator Fiscal. Two men have appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged gangland firebomb attack and the recovery of a firearm. Liam McDermid and Denin Mackenzie were taken into custody by officers investigating a spate of violent incidents across Edinburgh and Glasgow. He appeared in the dock to face a charge relating to being involved in serious organised crime under Section 28(1) of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010. He made no plea and was remanded into custody. Raids also took place at addresses in South Queensferry and Edinburgh after a vehicle was firebombed while parked on Peacocktail Close in Edinburgh on Friday, May 16. Mackenzie, of Edinburgh, was taken into custody by police and appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, June 16, where he faced five charges. The 22-year-old was charged with two counts of knife possession, one charge of wilful fireraising and one charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive way and one of vandalism. The vandalism charge was in relation to a property. He made no plea and was remanded into custody. Both men are expected to appear in the dock again next week. A 21-year-old man was also detained in the raids and has reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with wilful fireraisings at three properties in April. Police probing the murder of Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr in Spain had a suspect within hours, it has been claimed. Lyons Jr, 46, and Monaghan, 43, were gunned down in Fuengirola after they watched the Champions League final on the evening of Saturday, May 31. The killer walked into the bar and calmly first shot Lyons Jr dead before targeting Monaghan. Shortly afterwards, graphic security camera images of his killing were released to the Spanish media - however, until now, the existence of other footage has never been made public. The gunman was in and out of Monaghan's Irish Bar within 25 seconds in what experts describe as a "military-style" killing. However, as he left, he was inadvertently caught on another CCTV camera providing police with a vital breakthrough. It is not known if his identity was immediately known to the Spanish or if that came after they liaised with their counterparts back in the UK. A source told the Scottish Daily Express: "This was absolute dynamite for investigators. The fact that his image was so clear provided them with a major breakthrough within a very short time. It is apparent that they knew who they were looking for extremely quickly." Authorities in Fuengirola believe the killer was picked up a short distance from the crime scene and driven the 270-mile, three-hour trip across the border into Portugal. On Friday, Merseyside Police detained a 44-year-old male on an international arrest warrant on behalf of the Spanish. Michael Riley was later transferred from Liverpool to London, where he appeared before Westminster Magistrates' in connection with the double killing on Saturday morning. It is not yet known if the Liverpudlian will contest the application to return him to Spain. Within days of the murders Police Scotland issued a statement saying they were not in any way connected to the current ongoing gang war which has engulfed Scotland. The subsequent day, it was confirmed by officials that the fashion designer, also a father of two young children, sustained injuries that led to his death at hospital, reports the Mirror. Suspected shooter Gamboa was apprehended by law enforcement on the evening of the incident facing accusations of murder, despite the absence of clarity regarding his intentions. The Samoan native, Ah Loo, had recently embraced American citizenship and cast his vote for the first time in the 2024 election. Utah Representative Verona Mauga, speaking to KSL TV, recounted her time with Ah Loo earlier that night at the rally, saying: "Afa is a person who believed in equity and equality for all people and all communities. He believed that everyone was deserving of basic human rights. And that's why he was there. He was with his community and he was with people he cared about, marching and rallying for all of those things that make our community, like, really great." Mauga elaborated that she wasn't with him during the shooting; he was out with mates when shots rang out. She confided that after not hearing from him, they surmised "something wrong may have happened". Ah Loo, a contestant on Project Runway in 2019, had a passion for crafting garments for loved ones. He also co-created the Creative Pacific Foundation and imparted sewing skills through workshops. In homage, Mauga remarked: "He brought joy and laughter to the community, and he shared his art and his talents so freely with people."
