"US constantly bullying India in name of trade, Modi government is silent": Congress' Supriya Shrinate
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Tuesday said the Donald Trump administration is constantly 'bullying' India in the name of trade, adding that the Modi government is silent against the threats being made by the United States.
Speaking to ANI, Shrinate also pointed out that Indian students are facing issues with the admission procedure in the US, highlighting that a huge visa backlog has been created.
'Our students' visas are not being processed, a backlog is being created. The reality is that the admissions of our students are being cancelled. Another reality is that 682 Indians were deported to India, handcuffed, in military planes by America. The reality is that Donald Trump has taken credit for the ceasefire 12 times. Again and again, he says that he threatened India in the name of trade. I feel that the United States is constantly bullying and insulting us, and the Modi government is silent,' Shrinate told ANI.
Earlier on May 31, US President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, asserting that he used trade as a negotiation tactic.
Speaking at the Oval Office during an event marking Elon Musk's departure from his advisory role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump said, 'We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned out into a nuclear disaster, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan, and I want to thank my people. Also, we talk trade, and we say we can't trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons. They're great leaders in those countries, and they understood and they agreed.'
Meanwhile, India has clarified that the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan took place on May 10 following contacts between the two DGMOs and while there were conversations between Indian and US leaders on the evolving situation since Operation Sindoor was launched, the issue of trade or tariff did not come up in any of those discussions. (ANI)
On video of an Indian student handcuffed and pinned to the floor at an airport in the United States that went viral on social media., Shrinate said, 'He is a young student who went to America with the hope of building his future. But the way he was treated -- the way he was slammed and thrashed, the way he was handcuffed, the way he was trampled under boots, the way he was deported -- why is he being treated like an animal? This is happening to our students continuously.'
In this regard, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government and accused it of 'failing' to protect and safeguard the dignity of India and Indians abroad. (ANI)

ED searches on Cong MP, MLAs ‘conspiracy' to divide party: Kharge
Kalaburagi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday termed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searches against a party MP and three MLAs in the state, as a 'conspiracy' to divide the party in Karnataka. Without taking the name of the ruling BJP at the Centre, he claimed that the grand old party was being targeted, aimed at creating difference within the party, to reap benefits out of it, but they wouldn't be successful in their attempts as all Congress legislators are united. 'I don't know the details. I just saw it on TV. Naturally, if the ED has done it, they have been angry with the Congress party since the beginning. If they are targeting the Congress MLAs, there seems to be a conspiracy to divide our party,' Kharge said. Speaking to reporters here, he said if they harass them by bringing up something now that is said to have happened during the election, it is not right. 'The matter should have been looked into during the election, but after one year, one-and-half year, if they are taking it up now, it seems to be an attempt to divide the party legislators here. Let's see how the ED takes the case. I will get information from the CM over the phone and see what needs to be done,' he added. The ED on Wednesday conducted searches against Congress Ballari MP E Tukaram and three MLAs of the party as part of a money laundering investigation into the alleged Valmiki scam-linked money laundering case, official sources said. They said five premises in Ballari and three in Bengaluru city are being searched under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). These include houses belonging to Tukaram and MLAs Nara Bharath Reddy (Bellary city), J N Ganesh (Kampli) and N T Srinivas (Kudligi). To a question about an allegation by the ED that the corporation's money was misused, Kharge said, 'They may say so. It is a matter left to ED. I will not interfere. Such inquiries happen. During elections, crores of rupees are seized. Where is it? To whom does it belong? So far, things haven't come out. Money was seized from all parties then. Where is that money?' Noting that everyone knows who spends how much during elections, while indicating to the BJP, he said, 'They especially target one party (Congress) because, if they trouble this party naturally, there will be differences within, and they feel that it will benefit them. But it is impossible. Despite all their harassment, all our MLAs are united, and this is nothing new in Karnataka...I don't want to comment more until the inquiry is completed,' he added. Sources said the searches are being conducted in order to gather evidence on the allegation that funds siphoned off from the accounts of the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki ST Development Corporation (KMVSTDC) were used for election expenses -- to distribute cash to voters and Congress workers of the Ballari seat during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Kharge slams 11 years of Modi-led NDA govt
Kalaburagi: Slamming 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday accused the Prime Minister of committing 33 mistakes during this period. He claimed that he had never seen a PM who lies so much and 'traps' people and deceives the youth. 'It has been 11 years and 33 mistakes have been committed. You are aware and I have been saying it in parliament too -- I have never seen a Prime Minister who lies so much, who commits so many mistakes, who traps people, who deceives youth, who traps the poor and gets votes. I have been in power for 55 years, and in politics for 65 years. There has been no one like him,' Kharge said. Speaking to reporters here, he said the PM lies for everything and does not implement anything that he says, and when questioned he does not have any answers for it. 'Whether it is demonetisation or employment generation or MSP, there are many such things. He has never admitted that he has lied to people and has committed a mistake, and never apologised for it. He keeps on saying things one after the other and it has been 11 years now,' he added. Prime Minister Modi took oath for a third term on June 9, 2024. The Modi government marked its first anniversary in the third term and 11th overall on Monday. Kharge also said that he has written a letter to PM Modi stating that, in accordance with the Constitution, a Deputy Speaker should be appointed for the Lok Sabha, and that the government has to function in accordance with the Constitution. 'Modi says democracy, democracy. No Prime Minister after Independence has kept the Deputy Speaker post vacant, but during both his tenures (as PM), now the third period is going on, the post has been kept vacant,' he said. Noting that there is a provision in the Constitution about the election of Deputy Speaker, Kharge said when UPA government was there, a leader from the opposition was made the Deputy Speaker and this had been done earlier too. 'Modi's act is illegal, undemocratic, and he doesn't even want to give the post of Deputy Speaker to the Opposition. It shows he has no faith in democracy,' he added.

Canada's defence spending declaration is a wake-up call for India. US' credibility is low
The issue came to light when spare parts for Denmark's fleet of stealth F-35 combat aircraft were diverted to Israel, which is in the midst of a brutal assault on Gaza. The argument, and contracted at that, is that spare parts belong to the US Defence Department until they are installed on the planes. All future operating software and such updates also remain the sole property of the US, thus severely undermining individual members' sovereignty, and with the patronising attitude of President Trump acting as a wake-up call, Canada has declared its security intentions clearly and emphatically. This 2006 pledge was repeated in 2014 by NATO Defence Ministers, and remains the essential figure for each member country to spend to make the alliance a formidable and globally employable institution. The Russia-Ukraine war has compounded NATO members' anxieties, but it is the erratic nature of policy formulation in Washington that has finally pushed members over the edge. They can't sit idly and be secure about the viability of the US security umbrella. Even as it questions the commitment of individual members towards NATO, the US has attached bizarre contractual conditions on delivered high-end combat equipment. The magic of collective security can be tossed out of the window in a flash, as Canada has learnt from the mercurial behaviour of United States President Donald Trump. And threats from this 'dangerous and divided world' have led Canada to make an executive declaration — to spend '2 per cent of GDP on defence' by the end of the current fiscal year. In doing so, it will match the basic standard figure expounded by the Brussels-headquartered military collective, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Member states, including Canada, pledged in 2006 to hit this figure. Many such powers across the world will have to look within, analyse threadbare, dispassionately, and then predictably come to the same conclusion. That in the current unstable world, made more wobbly by President Trump's policy upheavals, they will also be defined not just by the 'strength of our values, but also by the value of our strength', as current Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently declared. It's obvious, to even the most simple minds, that this can only come from greater defence spending, hence the magic figure of 2 per cent of GDP. This, of course, also includes the overall welfare of soldiers as well as research and development expenditure that contributes to defence. Also read: Victor Gao claims all land north of Ganga for China. People say he's a 'diplomatic fighter' India's position Much has been said about India and its defence expenditure, especially as a percentage of GDP. Like all data-driven debates, analysts are not on the same wavelength when it comes to calculating the precise figures. So if the purpose is to arrive at a reliable figure, in an unsubstantiated environment, it is safest to fall back on the original global institution, the World Bank. And the World Bank chart clearly shows that India's defence spending as a percentage of GDP has been hovering above the magical figure. And has been consistently so for the past few years. India is, of course, the only country that has two nuclear-armed neighbours, both of whom covet Indian territory. It is also the only country that has had armed conflict with these neighbours. And both these countries violate international treaties and norms only to pin down India. This is not an easy task given the current national resolve, emphatically visible during the recently concluded Op Sindoor. Whatever the initial global marketing blitz and hype, post-operation analysis with cool heads has shown reality to be very different. Even the stock market has corrected itself. Global turbulence, and not just of the stock market variety, should, nevertheless, serve as a wake-up call for Indian policy planners to prepare for far greater challenges coming to the neighbourhood. Especially given the fact that the prevailing unity among the democratic order has been subverted. By monetising security agreements at any opportunity, Washington has only lowered its own credibility ratings in the global security sphere. And all this while the world is not sitting idle, especially not those countries that see an opportunity beckoning. For the first time, two Chinese aircraft carriers are now seen operating in different parts of the Pacific Ocean, clearly sending a message as much to Washington as to the rest of Asia. An aircraft carrier, after all, doesn't operate in isolation. It is part of an enormous flotilla of ships, a carrier group in naval parlance. It takes fairly good operational art and extremely impressive military logistics to operate two carrier groups simultaneously. And when deployed in the same oceanic space, it is the simplest message to decipher. As the first part of the Indo-Pacific hyphen, India must lead.
