South Africa: Spaza Shop Support Fund information session to be held in Limpopo
Limpopo spaza shop owners will get an opportunity to learn more about how they can access financial and non-financial support from the Spaza Shop Support Fund at an interactive session at the George Phadagi Town Hall, in Thohoyandou, on Friday. The session is part of a countrywide campaign aimed at creating awareness about the Spaza Shop Support Fund. The campaign, which began in KwaZulu-Natal last month, is hosted by the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (the Dtic) and the Department of Small Business Development (DSDB). The R500m fund was launched by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, and the Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, in Soweto, on 8 April 2025. The national education and awareness campaign is being held in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA) and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), the agencies of the DSBD and the Dtic, respectively, which will be responsible for administering the fund. The interactive session with spaza owners in the Vhembe District Municipality will be an opportunity to learn more about how to apply for the fund and which requirements will they be expected to comply with. According to Minister Tau, government is taking a concrete step to formalise and empower the informal sector with the fund. Tau said supporting spaza shops would enable entrepreneurs, often women and young people, to participate fully in the economic process. 'These small businesses generate employment, drive local commerce, and channel much-needed income into communities that have long been underserved. Studies show that small businesses account for a significant portion of job creation in South Africa. 'By providing spaza shop owners with financial support, infrastructure upgrades, and essential business training, we are setting the stage for sustainable job creation,' Tau said. Minister Ndabeni said the role played by Sedfa and NEF was truly appreciated and that the department believed this fund would go a long way in assisting shop owners that are registered and have operating permits. 'Our partnership ensures that spaza shop owners are not only funded but are also trained, mentored, and integrated into reliable supply chains. This is about building long-term sustainability for township retail,' Ndabeni said. The aim of the fund is to support South African-owned township community convenience shops, including spaza shops, to increase their participation in the townships and rural areas' retail trade sector and to provide critical financial and non-financial support to township businesses, including community convenience stores and spaza shops. The fund also provides various types of support including the initial purchase of stock via delivery channel partners, upgrading of building infrastructure, systems, refrigeration, shelving and security, as well as training programmes which includes point of sale devices, business skills, digital literacy, credit health, food safety, business compliance. The fund also seeks to bolster the broader supply chain by fostering partnerships with local manufacturers, black industrialists and wholesalers. Through bulk purchasing arrangements and the promotion of locally produced goods, spaza shops will benefit from reduced costs and increased access to quality products.

Final deadline to benefit from Egypt's 2025 tax relief is August 12: ETA chief
Egypt - Rasha Abdel Aal, Head of the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA), has confirmed that 12 August 2025 is the final deadline for businesses to benefit from the relief incentives provided under Law No. 5 of 2025. She urged business owners to take prompt action, as the authority intensifies efforts to engage the business community and raise awareness of the new measures. 'Our engagement with the business community is based on the principle of partnership and mutual benefit, in line with the state's development goals and citizens' aspirations,' said Abdel Aal. She added that hundreds of awareness seminars—both in-person and online—have already been held across Egypt, and these efforts will continue to foster a tax-conscious, voluntarily compliant society. She emphasized that the tax relief measures are time-limited and called on businesses to seize the opportunity to settle outstanding obligations under favorable terms before the deadline. 'This is a chance to open a new chapter based on trust, cooperation, and mutual support,' she said. Abdel Aal also highlighted targeted support for small and micro enterprises under the simplified tax system, applicable to businesses with annual revenues under EGP 20m. These entities are subject to a proportional tax—starting at 0.4% for revenues below EGP 500,000 and up to 1.5% for those under EGP 20m. Additional incentives and exemptions are available under Law No. 6 of 2025, including free technical support and access to operational tools provided by the authority. Abou Zeid Abdel Rahman, Director of Customer Service at the Large Taxpayers Centre and Head of the Integrated Call Centre, explained that Law No. 5 of 2025 waives all penalties related to the submission or amendment of tax returns for the years 2020 to 2024. The law also enables the resolution of disputes from earlier tax periods—ending before 2020—through partial payment of assessed taxes. For businesses with audited accounts, full exemption from late payment interest and additional tax is granted upon payment of the original tax owed. Mohsen El-Gayar, Head of Customer Service for the Suez Canal cities, added that Law No. 7 of 2025, which amends parts of the Unified Tax Procedures Law, limits late payment interest and penalties to no more than the original tax due, regardless of the tax period. The law also allows reconciliation in procedural violations not involving tax liabilities—such as the failure to submit nil returns on time. He also announced enhancements to the Investor Support Unit, the launch of a Pre-Ruling Unit for consultations and feasibility reviews, and a 24/7 complaints unit to provide rapid resolution of taxpayer concerns. New sector-specific audit guidelines and investor-focused manuals are now available on the Egyptian Tax Authority's official website, offering clear information on obligations, entitlements, and incentives. Mohamed Abdel Aziz Amer, Head of the Badr Development Authority, commended the tax authority's outreach and awareness campaign, describing the reforms as a 'remarkable shift in tax policy thinking.' He urged investors in Badr City and beyond to capitalize on the available incentives to support long-term growth and expansion.

South Africa: Govt pays $335,634 from spaza shop fund
Government has so far disbursed R6m out of R500m in funding through the Spaza Shop Support Fund (SSSF) to eligible spaza shops and other food-handling outlets. The fund, aimed at increasing the participation of South African-owned spaza shops in the townships and rural areas retail trade sector, was launched last month. 'This is moving in a slow pace due to all the parties that are involved in coordinating the work, which includes inspections, verification of citizenship as well as site and health inspections. 'The fund will assist shop owners that met the deadline for the registration of an operating permit,' Minister of Small Business Development Stella Tembisa Ndabeni said during a media briefing in Pretoria on Thursday, 29 May. It offers funding of up to R300,000 per shop through a combination of grants and low-interest loans. In addition, it allocates funding specifically for initial stock purchases, infrastructure improvements, business development tools, and Point of Sale (POS) system adoption. The fund is being administered by the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and the Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency (Sefda). Through the fund, shop owners will be provided with assistance in meeting hygiene and regulatory standards to ensure the provision of safe, high-quality products. Inaugural Global SME Ministerial Meeting Marking the countdown to the first-ever Global Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) Ministerial Meeting to be hosted by the South African government and the United Nations Small Business Agency in Johannesburg, the Minister shared the vision and expected outcomes of the Ministerial meeting. Taking place from 22-24 July 2025, the Ministerial Meeting will serve as a dedicated platform for ministers and officials responsible for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to share strategic insights, shape future policies, and foster global consensus on the small business agenda. Countries from around the world have confirmed their participation, including Brazil, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, India, Indonesia and Switzerland, among others. Nearly 50 countries are expected to be at the event. 'As a country, through the Department of Small Business Development, we are steadfast in our commitment to create a more enabling legislative and policy environment that empowers small businesses to grow, scale up, and compete on the global stage. 'In addition, we will galvanize a call-to-action to influence dialogues and decisions at the Group Twenty (G20) Summit under South Africa's leadership. We are unequivocal that the G20 needs a sharper MSME focus with its own dedicated Working Group, and we will use this Global Ministerial to bolster this position. 'We will also use this Global Ministerial to develop and activate strong partnerships across governments, multilateral institutions, and businesses. We do not want a talk- shop. We will emerge with practical initiatives that strengthen the global MSME support eco-system, as well as country-level partnerships that translate policy into action,' the Minister said. Startup20 Task Force The Department of Small Business Development will also be hosting the Startup20 Task Force planning sessions in the days preceding the Ministerial. This will provide the opportunity for Task Force leaders to share thinking with global MSME leaders beyond the G20. 'The challenges that small businesses face is vast and cannot be tackled by any one nation alone. Thus, I passionately urge governments, international agencies, development partners, and the private sector to join us in strengthening MSME ecosystems. 'Let us deepen our regional and global cooperation, share knowledge, and uplift MSMEs especially those led by women, youth, and persons with disabilities,' the Minister said. South Africa assumed the G20 Presidency from 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025 under the theme: Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.
