Utah County warming centers complete first year of operation
UTAH COUNTY, Utah () — Utah County warming centers that opened last fall are now completing their first year of operation.
The Utah County Winter Response Center rotated between three locations: the Provo Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Genesis Project church in Provo, and a Utah County-owned warehouse, known as the 'Red Warehouse.'
It served an average of 75 people experiencing homelessness each night, with the most people the shelter served in one night being 113. The first night that it opened was Oct. 15, 2024. Today, Wednesday, April 30, will be the last night of its first season.
Utah County will open 3 warming centers during the winter season
The center was a part of the county's 2024-2025 winter response plan following requiring counties to provide winter shelters.
The warming center, operated by Community Action Services & Food Bank, worked to connect those experiencing homelessness with community resources.
According to a press release from Community Action Services & Food Bank, the operation was reported to be successful, with zero weather-related deaths in the county.
'We can't say enough about the community support we received for the warming centers. Volunteers made this possible,' says Jessica Miller, Chief Impact Officer. The Utah County Response Task Force reports that it will now start preparing for its second year and see what improvements can be made.

Abilene TV station damaged, knocked off air by storm
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A severe storm late Sunday damaged a TV station north of Abilene, Texas, according to the station's social media account. Pictures posted by KTXS show damage to a section of the station's roof and walls. Another picture shows a steel tower lying on the ground. KXAN sister station KTAB posted a gallery showing the storm's aftermath, including photos of KTXS. The station said that none of its employees were injured during the storm. Time codes on the social media posts suggest that the station was hit after 11 p.m. Sunday. KTXS Meteorologist Mark Rowlett said in a social media post that the damage was caused by strong winds. The damage knocked the station off-air, he said. KTXS is a Sinclair-owned station and ABC affiliate that covers the Abilene area.
