'Massage, needles, hyperbaric, H waves': What Tyrese Haliburton said about his injury

INDIANAPOLIS -- Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton acknowledged Wednesday that he is dealing with a right calf strain and coach Rick Carlisle still categorized his status for Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder as close to a game-time decision at media availability Wednesday.
The Pacers are down 3-2 and facing elimination in Thursday's 8:30 p.m. game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The Pacers held a walk-through Wednesday morning and a shootaround open to media for about half an hour around noon. Haliburton participated in both and had no issues shooting the ball, but Carlisle acknowledged there was no real running involved.

"We'll see where we are (Thursday)," Carlisle said. "It's a topic that people want to hear about and know about. There's going to be a lot of questions about it. We will not really know for sure until late tomorrow afternoon or early evening."
Haliburton has been getting treatment on his lower right leg since Game 2, but he acknowledged Wednesday that the injury he was dealing with in Game 2 was an ankle issue and he didn't have a calf problem until Game 5 when he tripped and fell trying to drive to the lane in the first quarter. He struggled through the rest of the game and finished with four points on 0 of 6 shooting, but after Game 5 he said he intended to play in Game 6 and that in the NBA Finals, he would want to play if he could walk.
However, on Wednesday, he also acknowledged he'd have to listen to the Pacers' medical staff to make sure he's not running the risk of turning a minor injury into a major one. Kevin Durant missed four games in the NBA Finals with a calf strain in 2019, returned for Game 5 and then suffered an Achilles tendon tear that kept him off the floor for the entire 2019-20 season.
"I think I have to be as smart as I want to be," Haliburton said. "Have to understand the risks, ask the right questions. I'm a competitor; I want to play. I'm going to do everything in my power to play. That's just what it is."
Haliburton said he expects the treatment to be near-constant over the next 30 hours.
"I think just around-the-clock stuff as much as I can," Haliburton said. "Massage, needles, hyperbaric, H waves. Everything you can do to get as comfortable as you can going into it. The right tape and stuff while I am performing I'm sure there's a bunch of medical professionals who could give you a better answer. Just doing everything I'm told. Trying to do everything I can."
Haliburton is, of course, used to the process of game-time decisions related to medical issues as he's dealt with an array of injuries over the last three seasons including a elbow sprain in 2022-23, a hamstring strain in 2023-24, a groin strain this season and back issues. He's had injuries he's played through and others that have led to him being shut down and has said in the past that the medical staff sometimes saves him from himself when he wants to push past an injury he shouldn't.
"I have a lot of trust in our medical staff," Haliburton said. "I have a lot of trust in our organization to make the right decision. I think there's been many situations through the course of my career where they've trusted me on my body. You're here more than anybody. You know I'm questionable from time to time throughout the course of season. They trust me to make the right decision on my body when the power is in my hands. I'm trying to try my best to do that. I mean, you understand that. I want to be out there. That's the plan."
Haliburton acknowledged, though, that the calculus is different in the NBA Finals. In the regular season, he'd probably sit out a week or two weeks to heal.

The Buss family is selling a majority ownership stake of the Lakers

The Buss family is selling a majority ownership stake of the Lakers On Wednesday, during the latter stages of the NBA Finals, some huge news involving the Los Angeles Lakers has broken. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Buss family has agreed to sell a majority share of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, who is CEO and chairman of diversified holding company TWG Global. However, Jeanie Buss, who has been the governor of the Lakers, will remain in her role. Via ESPN: "The Buss family is entering into an agreement to sell majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter for a franchise valuation of approximately $10 billion, sources told ESPN, the most ever for a U.S. professional sports team," Charania wrote. "The Buss family will keep a minority share of the team, just over 15%, for a period of time, a source said. "In addition, Jeanie Buss will remain the Lakers' governor and continue to run the team for 'at least a number of years,' sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. It was guaranteed as part of the agreement that Jeanie Buss would remain in charge for the foreseeable future, and Walter fully endorsed this plan, according to sources." The Buss family purchased the Lakers in 1979 from previous owner Jack Kent Cooke. At that time, Buss' father, the late Dr. Jerry Buss, became the owner of the team, and it went on to win the NBA championship the very next season. Four more world titles followed in the next eight seasons, transforming the Purple and Gold from the bridesmaid franchise it had been in the 1960s and 1970s into the gold standard of basketball. It won another five championships in an 11-season span starting in the 1999-2000 campaign with Kobe Bryant as its driving force, as well as an additional one in 2020 with LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way. Walter's TWG Global owns interests in several other sports franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won the National League West in 11 of the last 12 years and the World Series in two of the last five Major League Baseball seasons. He has owned a stake in the Purple and Gold since 2021.

Locked on Rockets: How aggressive should Houston be in its trade pursuit of Kevin Durant?

Locked on Rockets: How aggressive should Houston be in its trade pursuit of Kevin Durant? Wednesday's Locked on Rockets show explores many of Houston's considerations in a potential Kevin Durant trade with Phoenix. That includes the long-term fits of both Jabari Smith Jr. and Jalen Green. The specifics of Houston's trade offer for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant have yet to be identified in a report. However, financial analysis from Rockets Wire points to a package headlined by Jalen Green or a combination of Dillon Brooks and either Jabari Smith Jr. or Reed Sheppard as the most likely starting point. Draft equity and further matching salaries would likely be a component, as well. Phoenix is reportedly underwhelmed by the current offer, though negotiations are ongoing. The Rockets are believed to be on Durant's list of desired destinations, along with the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. Furthermore, suitors not on that list (such as Minnesota) are reportedly not willing to bid aggressively without a change in the All-Star forward's stance. Since Durant's current contract expires after next season, his choice to sign (or not sign) an extension carries significant weight in these talks, since many teams won't risk surrendering significant asset capital if they might lose him as an unrestricted free agent a year later. So, if that makes a Durant-to-Houston deal increasingly realistic: Would the Rockets be better off with a deal headlined by Green, or one featuring Brooks and Smith or Sheppard? Or, could perhaps both Green and Smith be included if Houston keeps pick No. 10 in the 2025 first round? In theory, that selection could then be used to select a Smith replacement. Should a Rockets-Suns deal happen, either Green or Brooks would likely be replaced by Durant in Houston's starting lineup for the 2025-26 season. Featuring credentialed media members Jackson Gatlin and Ben DuBose as hosts, Wednesday's Locked on Rockets podcast episode explores the current state of Durant talks and what makes the most sense for the franchise as negotiations enter the closing stages. Tune in below! Another discussion topic is Smith's looming contract extension, and what role (if any) that could have in determining if he's included in a Durant deal. By contrast, the value of Green's second NBA contract is already known, since he was drafted a year earlier. Green and Smith were drafted by Houston at No. 2 and No. 3 in the 2021 and 2022 first rounds, respectively. Green was the leading scorer on the 2024-25 Rockets, who finished at 52-30 and with the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. Smith operated as a versatile forward providing both perimeter shooting and defensive value, though he finished the year as a sixth man after being bumped to the bench in favor of Amen Thompson. Then again, despite his regular-season success and growth as a player, Green had a very underwhelming playoff run during a seven-game, first-round series loss to the Golden State Warriors. With the long-term hierarchy still somewhat in question, Wednesday's episode breaks down many of the considerations for general manager Rafael Stone and head coach Ime Udoka. Those considerations also include the massive age gap between Smith (22), Green (23), and Durant (36), and how much that discrepancy should be weighed during Houston's ongoing talks with Phoenix. Stay tuned! More: Jalen Green reportedly determined to improve upon playoff struggles, stay in Houston
