Amadou Bagayoko: the blind Malian musician whose joyful songs changed west African music

Amadou Bagayoko (1954-2025), iconic Malian guitarist, singer and composer of the famed duo Amadou & Mariam – known as 'the blind couple of Mali' – passed away on 4 April in Bamako. He was 70.
The married singers, who met when she was 18 and he 21, took traditional Mali music and blended it with western rock and many other influences to shape a whole new sound that was both rich and playful. They would sell millions of albums for hits like Sunday in Bamako and Sabali.
They would tour the world, opening the 2006 men's Football World Cup, closing the 2024 Paralympics, singing at former US president Barack Obama's Nobel Prize concert, winning awards and selling millions of albums.
Despite this fame, they remained tireless activists for Africans with disabilities. They were known and admired at home for their integrity, where Amadou's passing is much lamented.
As a musician and professor of music with a research focus on Mali's music, I met and interviewed Amadou several times. His passing heralds the end of an era for Mali's long-held musical dominance in the international market.
Amadou and Mariam Doumbia were both dedicated promoters of the work of the Institute for the Blind in Bamako – where they had first met in the 1970s as students and went on to be music teachers. They married in 1980 and remained inseparable, forming Amadou & Mariam.
Their hit songs combined the musical traditions of the southern part of Mali where they both came from – Bougouni, Sikasso – together with elements from rock, reggae, Cuban rhythms, and more – all transformed through their own ingenuity, but also, later on, by the ideas of influential producers.

In fact, the surnames Bagayoko and Doumbia are both from the ancient lineage (called Boula) of blacksmiths that date back to the time of the emperor Sunjata Keita, who founded the Mali empire in 1235. The blacksmiths (numu) were often powerful kings. This shared heritage in the noble past of the blacksmiths is significant in their musical synergy.
Amadou's career spanned more than five decades, beginning in the early 1970s when he played electric guitar in several influential dance bands of Mali of the time, including Les Ambassadeurs, fronted by the legendary singer Salif Keita.
President Moussa Traoré's 23-year military regime from 1968 to 1991 favoured the voices of the griots. These hereditary musicians sang the praises of the people in power in a flowery, strident style.
The life of these dance bands was on the wane by the late 1980s, which is when 'la grand couple aveugle du Mali' (the blind couple of Mali) were launched – at first, two simple voices accompanied by Amadou's guitar, recorded on cassette. At the end of Traore's rule, Amadou & Mariam's music responded to the new spirit of democracy that the country was hungry for.
There were many things that set this duo apart from other musicians of the region. They were not griots. Their lyrics are often about the power of love – not a straight forward topic in a country where polygyny (up to four wives, as permitted by Islam) is the norm. Their presence on stage as a blind couple, looking affectionate and mutually supportive – with their chic coordinated attire – also raised the profile of people with disabilities. Their melodies were catchy and upbeat.
Sorting through my research recently I came across a photo I took of them on my old slides, buried in my archives. It was a revelation to see it again.
I took the photo, with their permission, when I first met Amadou and Mariam in 1992 in Bamako. It was at the recording studio that is now known as Bogolan, where they were hoping, at the time, to make some recordings.
It shows Amadou and Mariam in their youth with pride and dignity, values that remained constant for them in later years. On that first encounter, I was struck by their graciousness, their belief in their musical project, and their determination to bring it to a wider public.
I wished at the time that I had the contacts in the record industry to help them. But they did not give up and they slowly built up their career, building on their sound and image which was and remains unique within the variety of Malian music.
Against all the odds, with their conviction, talent, strong melodies and good production, Amadou & Mariam became hugely successful in the early 2000s. The album that really launched their international career was Dimanches à Bamako (Sundays in Bamako) brilliantly produced by French-Spanish singer-songwriter Manu Chao, who had had a big international hit with his creative and catchy album Clandestino in 1998.
He brought some of those production values into Amadou & Mariam's songs. Dimanches à Bamako celebrates the vibrant culture of wedding parties held in the streets of Bamako on Sundays, (a day when civil marriage ceremonies are free).
'Dimanches à Bamako' was the first of several successful albums by Amadou & Mariam that were produced by European producers such as Damon Albarn, with songs like Tie ni Mousso (Husband and Wife) that played on the charming and iconic stage presence of Amadou & Mariam as a devoted husband and wife. The songs were accessible and appealing but still delivered pop punch.
After that first meeting in 1992, we met up again many times, frequently for radio.
Amadou was a much respected and admired musician whose music reached out to audiences around the world. He was hugely loved and appreciated both at home and abroad not just for his talent and musical creativity as an excellent guitarist and song writer – but also for the iconic image that he and Mariam created on stage.
Together hey will be remembered and respected for the values they represent in their music: equality, love, perseverance against disability, and truth. My condolences to Mariam.

Thirteen people went on trial in Paris on Wednesday over a "racist" insult targeting Franco-Malian singer Aya Nakamura, who faced criticism from the far right and harassment over her performance at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. The defendants, linked to extreme-right group Les Natifs (the Natives), are on trial for unveiling a banner in March 2024 that read: "No way, Aya, this is Paris, not the Bamako market" -- a reference to Mali's capital, where the singer was born. Nakamura's performance sparked a political firestorm among far-right politicians and conservatives in a reaction French President Emmanuel Macron at the time described as "racist" and "shocking". The 13 defendants, who are aged between 20 and 31, now face charges of publicly inciting hatred or violence -- or complicity in such incitement -- on the grounds of ethnicity, nationality, race, or religion. Only three appeared in court, while the remaining 10 were represented by their lawyers. Les Natifs espouses the far-right, white nationalist so-called "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory, according to which white Europeans are being deliberately supplanted by non-white immigrants. Nakamura responded to the group's stunt on social media at the time, writing: "You can be racist, but you're not deaf... and that's what really bothers you! I'm suddenly the number one topic of debate -- but what do I really owe you? Nothing." Nakamura was neither present at Wednesday's hearing nor represented by a lawyer. - 'Shock public opinion' - The 30-year-old is the world's most listened to Francophone singer, and her July 2024 performance on one of Paris's fabled bridges, the Pont des Arts, was among the most-watched moments of the opening ceremony. But when rumours began circulating in March that the Mali-born and Paris-raised superstar was going to perform, far-right politicians and groups vehemently criticised the decision. An appearance by Nakamura, who mixes French with Arabic and Malian slang, would "humiliate" the country, far-right leader Marine Le Pen suggested, taking aim at her supposed "vulgarity" and "the fact that she doesn't sing in French". Far-right media amplified Les Natifs' banner which they unfurled along the capital's River Seine, another in a series of provocative stunts by the group which it shares with thousands of followers on social media. In March, the group covered portraits of veiled women on display in a church in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis with black sheets. One of the thirteen defendants set to stand trial on Wednesday, Stanislas T., 24, will also face charges in that case on Thursday. And in February, they plastered an Air Algeria office in Paris with posters reading "Re-migrate 'light' from France to Algeria, for a one-way ticket with no return" written over a single suitcase. The goal for groups like Les Natifs is to "provoke massive reactions and shock public opinion so we have no choice but to talk about them", said Marion Jacquet-Vaillant, an expert on far-right movements in France. Among the defendants are Les Natifs' leader Edouard M., a 28-year-old finance professional, and the group's spokesman, Antoine G., a 27-year-old lawyer. Both were absent from the hearing. Capucine C., 22, who until March 2025 was a "parliamentary assistant" to three far-right National Rally MPs, was in the courtroom on Wednesday. In April, one of Les Natifs' roughly 50 members described the group's identity as "civilisational, European; national, French; and local, Parisian". The so-called fight against the "great replacement" is the "mother of all battles", said Gabriel, 25, who works in finance. In 2024, the UN human rights chief warned that the conspiracy theory is "delusional and deeply racist," and a direct driver of violence. Nakamura's complaint is not the only one stemming from the opening ceremony to head to trial. A French court in May found seven people guilty of bullying Thomas Jolly, the artistic director for the opening ceremony who is openly gay. Just like Anne (and Princess Kate), Queen Silvia is known to recycle decades-old pieces of clothing—and even passes them down to daughter Crown Princess Victoria. But on Saturday, May 31, she made one performer do a double-take in a nearly 50-year-old evening dress. Per Vanity Fair, Queen Silvia—who married King Carl XVI Gustaf in 1976—wore the same sparkling yellow Dior gown that she debuted shortly after her royal wedding while appearing on a new episode of Swedish show Vilket liv! over the weekend. And she didn't just recycle the gown for any old reason; Silvia wore the Dior dress to surprise drag performer Christer Lindarw, who has been impersonating the Swedish queen since the '70s. The designer and actor created his own copy of the bright yellow gown to wear for a 1977 drag performance after Queen Silvia wore it to the 1976 Nobel Prize ceremony and a state visit to the Netherlands. In a video shared by the Swedish family on Instagram, the performer is seen gasping and covering his mouth when Queen Silvia walked out on stage in her famous yellow gown and the priceless Napoleonic Cut-Steel Tiara. "The Queen appeared tonight in TV4's "Vilket liv!" the royal court captioned the post. "The TV program pays tribute to the artist Christer Lindarw, who for many years impersonated Her Majesty in the drag show group After Dark's performances. 🪩👸." The moment paid tribute to Lindarw's 1977 performance, during which he gave Queen Silvia a rose as she watched from the royal box with King Carl Gustaf. This time, the queen returned the favor and presented him with a pink rose and gave Lindarw a hug as the crowd gave the pair a standing ovation. "From a queen to another queen," Queen Silvia said to an emotional Lindarw. And as for her Dior dress? "It's the original," she declared.

When Elvis and Ella were pressed onto X-rays – the subversive legacy of Soviet ‘bone music'

When Western Electric invented electrical sound recording 100 years ago, it completely transformed the public's relationship to music. Before then, recording was done mechanically, scratching sound waves onto rolled paper or a cylinder. Such recordings suffered from low fidelity and captured only a small segment of the audible sound spectrum. By using electrical microphones, amplifiers and electromechanical recorders, record companies could capture a far wider range of sound frequencies, with much higher fidelity. For the first time, recorded sound closely resembled what a live listener would hear. Over the ensuing years, sales of vinyl records and record players boomed. The technology also allowed some enterprising music fans to make recordings in surprising and innovative ways. As a physician and scholar in the medical humanities, I am fascinated by the use of X-ray film to make recordings – what was known as 'bone music,' or 'ribs.' This rather bizarre, homemade technology became a way to skirt censors in the Soviet Union – and even played an indirect role in its dissolution. At the end of World War II, Soviet censorship shifted into high gear in an effort to suppress a Western culture deemed threatening or decadent. Many books and poems could circulate only through 'samizdat,' a portmanteau of 'self' and 'publishing' that involved the use of copy machines to reproduce forbidden texts. Punishments inflicted on Soviet artists and citizens for producing or disseminating censored materials included loss of employment, imprisonment in gulags and even execution. The phonographic analog of samizdat was often referred to as 'roentgenizdat,' which was derived from the name of Wilhelm Roentgen, the German scientist who received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901 for his discovery of X-rays. Roentgen's work revolutionized medicine, making it possible to peer inside the living human body without cutting it open and enabling physicians to more easily and accurately diagnose skeletal fractures and diseases such as pneumonia. Today, X-rays are produced and stored digitally. But for most of the 20th century they were created on photographic film and stored in large film libraries, which took up a great deal of space. Because exposed X-ray films cannot be reused, hospitals often recycled them to recoup the silver they contained. In the Soviet Union in the 1940s, some clever people realized that X-ray film was just soft enough to be etched by an electromechanical lathe, or sound recording device. To make a 'rib,' or 'bone record,' they would use a compass to trace out a circle on an exposed X-ray film that might bear the image of a patient's skull, spine or hands. They then used scissors to cut out the circle, before cutting a small hole in the middle so it would fit on a conventional record player. Then they would use a recording device to cut either live sound or, more commonly, a bootleg record onto the X-ray film. Sound consists of vibrations that the lathe's stylus etches into grooves on the disc. Such devices were not widely available, meaning that only a relatively small number of people could produce such recordings. The censors kept a close eye on record companies. But anyone who could obtain a recording device could record music on pieces of X-ray film, and these old films could be obtained after hospitals threw them out or purchased at a relatively low price from hospital employees. Compared with professionally produced vinyl records, the sound quality was poor, with recordings marred by extraneous noises such as hisses and crackles. The records could be played only a limited number of times before the grooves would wear out. Nonetheless, these resourceful recordings were shared, bought and sold entirely outside of official channels into the 1960s and 1970s. Popular artists 'on the bone' included Ella Fitzgerald and Elvis Presley, whose jazz and rock 'n' roll recordings, to the ears of many Soviet citizens, represented freedom and self-expression. In his book 'Bone Music,' cultural historian Stephen Coates describes how Soviet authorities viewed performers such as The Beatles as toxic because they appeared to promote a brand of amoral hedonism and distracted citizens from Communist party priorities. One Soviet critic of bone music recalled of its purveyors: 'It is true that from time to time they are caught, their equipment confiscated, and they may even be brought to court. But then they may be released and be free to go wherever they like. The judges decide that they are, of course, parasites, but they are not dangerous. They are getting suspended sentences! But these record producers are not just engaged in illegal operations. They corrupt young people diligently and methodically with a squeaky cacophony and spread explicit obscenities.' Bone music was inherently subversive. For one thing, it was against the law. Moreover, the music itself suggested that a different sort of life is possible, beyond the strictures of Communist officials. How could a political system that prohibited beautiful music, many asked, possibly merit the allegiance of its citizens? The ability of citizens to get around the censors and spread Western thought, whether through books or bone music, helped chip away at the government's legitimacy. One Soviet-era listener Coates interviewed long after the USSR's collapse described the joy of listening to these illicit recordings: 'I was lifted up off the ground, I started flying. Rock'n'roll showed me a new world, a world of music, words, and feelings, of life, of a different lifestyle. That's why, when I got my first records, I became a happy man. I felt like a changed person, it was as if I was born again.'
