Saudi Arabia prepares for Hajj 2025 with simplified visas and enhanced pilgrim services

Arab Times26-04-2025

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, April 26: As millions of Muslims prepare for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has confirmed its full readiness for the 2025 Hajj season. The ministry has introduced a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving the pilgrim experience in line with national objectives.
Among the key measures, the ministry has simplified the issuance of temporary work permits through the 'Ajeer' platform. This initiative is designed to facilitate seasonal employment during Hajj, ensuring that necessary services are adequately staffed.
In addition, the ministry is working to make Hajj and Umrah work visas more accessible for businesses involved in supporting the pilgrimage. This effort aims to ensure a stable and efficient workforce is present at essential service points throughout the holy sites.
To uphold labor standards during this critical period, the ministry will intensify inspection visits. These inspections will focus on enforcing the Kingdom's Labour Law and its regulations, safeguarding appropriate working conditions for employees engaged during the pilgrimage.
Beyond employment and regulatory support, the ministry is expanding its social services across the holy sites. Pilgrims will benefit from access to family counseling and a variety of social support services. Notably, children's hospitality centers, staffed by trained professionals, will be available to offer supervised care.
Volunteerism is also a major focus for the 2025 season. The ministry is actively promoting and organizing volunteer activities, ranging from welcoming pilgrims at border checkpoints to providing guidance inside the Grand Mosque. Volunteers will assist the elderly and people with disabilities, as well as help distribute food and water across the pilgrimage zones.

All 8,000 Kuwaiti pilgrims have arrived; teams at highest readiness: Hajj Mission Chief

MAKKAH, June 4: Dr. Bader Al-Mutairi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Head of the Kuwaiti Hajj Mission, announced Tuesday that all 8,000 Kuwaiti pilgrims have arrived in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The pilgrims are part of 60 organized Hajj missions in preparation for the upcoming pilgrimage season. In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Dr. Al-Mutairi confirmed that all participating teams from various Kuwaiti government agencies are fully operational and working around the clock at the holy sites to ensure the safety and comfort of Kuwaiti pilgrims. He noted that preparations at Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah have been completed, crediting the efforts of mission teams who have been working diligently since the early stages of planning. These efforts reflect a unified commitment to providing a secure and well-organized environment for pilgrims to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind. Dr. Al-Mutairi urged all Kuwaiti pilgrims to strictly follow the instructions issued by the Saudi authorities, prepare themselves for the rituals, and fully cooperate with the supervisory and service teams of the Kuwaiti Hajj Mission. The Kuwaiti Hajj Mission comprises representatives from several government and public agencies, including the Ministries of Islamic Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Information, and Health. It also includes personnel from the General Fire Department, the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition, the Public Authority for Youth, and the Kuwait Red Crescent Society—all dedicated to serving the guests of God during the pilgrimage.

Pilgrims gather in Makkah for hajj

MAKKAH: More than a million Muslim pilgrims poured into the holy city of Makkah ahead of the annual hajj, with authorities vowing to hold a safer pilgrimage amid searing desert heat and a massive crackdown on illegal visitors. Officials have beefed up heat mitigation measures hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's hajj, which saw 1,301 pilgrims die as temperatures reached 51.8 degrees Celsius. Temperatures were forecast to exceed 40 degrees Celsius this week as one of the world's largest annual religious gatherings starts on Wednesday. The hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, must be performed at least once by all Muslims with the means. As of Friday, more than 1.3 million pilgrims had arrived in Saudi Arabia for the multi-day pilgrimage, according to officials. This year, authorities have mobilized more than 40 government agencies and 250,000 officials, doubling their efforts against heat-related illness following the lethal heatwave of 2024. Shaded areas have been expanded by 50,000 sq m, thousands more medics will be on standby, and more than 400 cooling units will be deployed, Saudi Arabia's hajj minister Tawfiq Al-Rabiah told AFP last week. On Monday, with temperatures topping 40 degrees Celsius, the health ministry said 44 cases of heatstroke had already been treated. The latest artificial intelligence technology will also help monitor the flood of data and footage, including video from a new fleet of drones, from across Makkah to better manage the mammoth crowds. Despite the punishing heat, pilgrims were overjoyed as they arrived in Makkah. 'This is really a blessing from Allah,' Abdul Majid Ati, a Filipino lawyer and sharia counsellor, told AFP near the Grand Mosque. 'We feel so peaceful and safe in this place.' Abdulhamid, from Nigeria, said he was 'very happy' to be performing his second pilgrimage in a row at just 27 years old. But the young man said he never walks out without his sunglasses, describing the temperatures in Mecca as 'very, very, very hot'. The rites in the holy city and its surroundings, which follow a lunar calendar, fall again this year during the hot month of June. Last year, most of the deaths were among unregistered pilgrims who lacked access to air-conditioned tents and buses. In the run-up to this year's hajj, Saudi authorities launched a widespread crackdown on unregistered worshippers, using frequent raids, drone surveillance and a barrage of text alerts. Hajj permits are allocated to countries on a quota system and distributed to individuals by lottery. But even for those who can obtain them, the steep costs prompt many to attempt the hajj without a permit — though they risk arrest and deportation if caught. Along with hefty fines, those found illegally entering Makkah during the hajj face a potential 10-year ban from Saudi Arabia. For Mariama, a 52-year-old pilgrim from Senegal, the journey to Makkah has fulfilled a lifelong dream. 'I was dreaming about it, thinking about it every time to come here to do the hajj,' she said. – AFP
