Did S.F. moderates ‘rile up' Chinese Americans on recalls only to abandon them?
It was billed as a press conference by the Chinese American Democratic Club, but it was more of an unload session on San Francisco Supervisor Joel Engardio, whom the group is trying to recall.
The anger was palpable from those speaking at the April 22 event who repeatedly called Engardio a 'liar' who failed to represent his constituents in the Sunset District.
'We have to recall this man and get us a person that truly represents the Sunset,' small-business owner and club member Albert Chow said.
At issue: the permanent, 24/7 closure of the Upper Great Highway to car traffic. Chinese American Democratic Club members said Engardio betrayed and surprised them by becoming the lead proponent for closing the Great Highway after earlier supporting a 2021 compromise worked out by his predecessor, Gordon Mar, for reopening the road to cars on weekdays after it had been closed during the pandemic.
'Supervisor Joel Engardio has shown us time and time again that he isn't a leader,' Chinese American Democratic Club spokesperson Julia Quon said.
If that rhetoric sounds familiar, it should.
West side voters, many of them Chinese American, were a driving force behind recalls of San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin and three school board members in 2022. The Chinese Democratic Club, a citywide organization, endorsed both recalls. Most of these same voters put their trust in Engardio, who supported the recalls; the more progressive Mar did not.
Engardio rode this populist wave to a slim victory over Mar in 2022 in the District 4 race. It was an election year that was also a referendum on San Francisco's liberal politics, with the recalls generating millions from wealthy political donors seeking to push the city's government to the political center.
Now Engardio is the target of a populist revolt, though it's not drawing the same political firepower as the Boudin and school board recalls.
'You would have hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not a million bucks, going into the effort to recall a progressive-leaning supervisor,' said political consultant David Ho, who worked on Mar's campaign.
The campaign opposed to Engardio's recall received $382,325 in donations this year through April 15, including $125,000 from Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppleman; the recall signature drive campaign has received $67,535 during the same period, according to city political campaign disclosure records.
Ho said it's troubling to see tech oligarchs and other big political donors 'rile up' Chinese Americans for the district attorney and school board recall but not support the community on other issues.
'Money-wise, yeah, we're not pulling in the $300,000, $400,000 that Joel is,' Vin Budhai, a lead recall campaign organizer, said in an interview. 'But people-wise, that's what this campaign is built on, volunteer power, and it's working.'
Recalling Engardio is an effort run by 'volunteers for and by District 4 residents' and 'that sort of funding from our local community is just as important,' Quon said in an interview.
Politically, however, this recall effort is different: Keeping Engardio on the Board of Supervisors maintains the moderate majority that's been crafted in the past few elections, which is probably why many of the groups that backed previous recall efforts have stayed quiet or are supporting Engardio.
'Ideologically, Supervisor Engardio has been aligned with groups like ours and with many other more moderate political organizations out there,' said Cyn Wang, a board member of the Westside Family Democratic Club, which opposes the recall and endorsed Prop K.
Wang co-founded the club after the Boudin and school board recalls, which she supported and said galvanized many club members to get involved in politics. Wang said Engardio is 'an ally to us' and disagreeing with his support for Prop K 'doesn't rise to the level of a recall.'
The fight over the Great Highway shares similarities to political battles from two decades ago when the elevated Embarcadero and Central freeways were torn down over the opposition of many Chinese Americans in Chinatown and the west side over concerns about neighborhood access and traffic.
'That was sort of the first time that west side Chinese organized and actually flexed their muscle at the ballot box,' Ho said. 'But ultimately they did lose.'
Several speakers at the Chinese American Democratic Club's press conference echoed the past feelings of being ignored, saying the recall was a way to make their concerns heard by their representatives.
Until Prop K, it didn't seem like Engardio could draw much scorn. He's mostly worked to support issues important to his constituents, like bringing algebra classes back to middle schools. The Sunset Night Market he championed has been popular, and he's worked to address homelessness and crime in the neighborhood.
'I don't think he predicted such a strong outcome against leading the effort' on Prop K, Ho said.
The campaign to oust Engardio has until May 22 to gather 10,000 signatures of District 4 residents to place a recall measure on the November ballot. If it makes the ballot and Engardio is voted out, Mayor Daniel Lurie would choose someone to fill the remainder of the term, which ends in January 2027.
If that happens, all the anger will just give District 4 residents a new supervisor a year earlier than otherwise possible, and the newly named Sunset Dunes Park will still be there on the closed Great Highway.
I don't agree with many of my neighbors and support closing the Great Highway, and I worry that the recall will be a waste of their growing political capital.
Recall proponents say they want a supervisor who will represent the community's interests. About 40% of the west side's population is Asian American, mostly Chinese. Instead of being just used as a political cash 'ATM,' as Ho put it, let's get more Asian American candidates, who have been in short supply lately, running for office — moderates, progressives and even conservatives. That's more democratic than a recall.

This governor vetoed a bill that would ban China from purchasing land. Here's why
Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs is facing criticism for vetoing a bill that would have prevented China from buying land in the state. In her veto letter, dated June 2, Hobbs said she considered protecting infrastructure important. 'However, this legislation is ineffective at counter-espionage and does not directly protect our military assets,' she said in the letter. 'Additionally, it lacks clear implementation criteria and opens the door to arbitrary enforcement.' Foreign entities own about 40 million acres, or 3%, of U.S. farmland as of 2021. Out of this, China owns 1%, much lower in comparison to Canada, which owns 33%, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This may seem like a small percentage, but it carries sizable national security implications, whether it's over concerns of who is controlling U.S. assets or whether the land could be used to conduct espionage. The bill in Arizona set out to address these concerns. In Arizona's Maricopa and Pinal counties, more than 294,000 acres of agricultural land is owned by Chinese corporations, as per the USDA Farm Services Agency. When Hobbs announced her decision to veto the bipartisan bill, she faced pushback. Arizona state Senate Majority Leader Janae Shamp claimed the veto was 'politically motivated' and 'utterly insane.' Shamp introduced the bill to protect the 'state's military, commercial and agricultural assets from foreign espionage and sabotage,' per the text of the legislation. She claims China attempted to lease land next to Luke Air Force Base, where the military trains fighter pilots. Michael Lucci, the CEO and founder of State Armor Action, a nonprofit organization that is pushing 70 bills targeting China in states across the country, said Hobbs hung an ''Open for the CCP' sign on Arizona's front door,' and made critical assets like Luke Air Force Base, Palo Verde nuclear power plant and Taiwan Semiconductor factory more vulnerable. 'Allowing Communist China to buy up land near our critical assets is a national security risk, plain and simple,' Lucci told Fox News. 'Gov. Hobbs is substantively and completely wrong when she says that SB 1109 'is ineffective at counter-espionage and does not directly protect our military assets.'' The White House attempted to ban China from buying U.S. land. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins confirmed this move earlier in February. 'One of the very, very top of the list perhaps is the Chinese purchase of our farmland. A lot of that land is around some of our military outposts,' Rollins told Breitbart News. Many states, especially the ones led by Republicans, are taking note. As of March 17, 27 states are considering 84 bills that restrict foreign property ownership in some way, according to Committee of 100, a nonprofit that advocates for Chinese Americans. Twenty-two states passed nearly 40 bills that restrict foreign property ownership, 17 of which became law last year. The idea of curbing investments from foreign adversaries into the U.S. for national security reasons isn't new. The U.S. restricted Chinese-based telecommunication company Huawei from doing business with American companies. Beijing-based social media app TikTok has so far survived a ban passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court, thanks to President Donald Trump, who extended the deadline for its Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest the app's assets in the U.S. It's possible Trump will extend the deadline a third time ahead of June 19, considering the app has 170 million users in the U.S. Still, the idea of restricting certain foreign investments isn't as popular in the Western U.S. as it is in the Midwest and the South. Only Idaho and Utah have laws on the books against international property buyers. Meanwhile, Nevada, California, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado and New Mexico do not. In the Beehive State, foreign-owned land is less than 40,000 acres. But it ranks in the top five in the country for the amount of acreage at risk due to the number of key military installations it hosts, including Hill Air Force Base, the Utah Test and Training Range and Dugway Proving Ground, as the Deseret News previously reported. Utah's foreign investment restriction laws attempt to nip the problem in the bud instead of letting it fester. Last year, the GOP-held state Legislature passed HB516, which prevents some countries — North Korea, China, Iran and Russia — from buying land in Utah. As the Deseret News previously reported, this bill sought to address national security concerns. The Utah Department of Public Safety is tasked with documenting these land holdings and compiling a database to reverse foreign investments. Sen. John Curtis, R-Utah, originally cosponsored a bill that would address this issue on the national level. In 2023, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed another bill, the Restrictions on Foreign Acquisitions of Land Act, that prohibits or restricts foreign investments and landholdings in Utah. In 2023, the Idaho Legislature codified a law that would restrict foreign governments or foreign-government owned businesses from buying farmland in the state or holding claims to any mineral or water. The Legislature fell short of enacting any enforcement for this law but remedied this two years later. In April, Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a law that authorized the state's attorney general to enforce the foreign ownership law.

Trump and Epstein: the history of their messy friendship
Resting his hand on Jeffrey Epstein's shoulder, Donald Trump smiled as he posed for a photograph with his old friend in Palm Beach in 1997. At the time, the pair, who moved in the same wealthy social circles and bonded over their love of beautiful women, had been friends for years. Eleven years later, Epstein was a convicted paedophile. Eleven years after that, he killed himself while in prison awaiting trial on sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. Ever since Epstein's crimes first came to light, the internet has been filled with conspiracy theories about Mr Trump's relationship with the sex offender. Now Elon Musk's bombshell accusation that Mr Trump is named in the Epstein files has put the president's old relationship with the paedophile under renewed scrutiny. Mr Trump is yet to comment on the allegation. Mr Trump and Epstein's friendship stretched back decades. The two wealthy businessmen would fly from New York to Palm Beach together. They would party at Mar-a-Lago Club and dine together at Epstein's Manhattan mansion. 'I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy', Mr Trump told New York magazine in 2002. 'He's a lot of fun to be with,' Mr Trump said. 'It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side,' he added. In a clip from the NBC archives of the two men at Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in 1992 they can be seen pointing out women on the dance floor. Credit: NBC That year, Mr Trump is said to have hosted a 'calendar girl' competition, which George Houraney, a Florida-based businessman, had organised at Mr Trump's request. Mr Houraney said he arranged for 28 girls to fly in, but later discovered the only other attendees would be Mr Trump and Epstein. 'I said, 'Donald, this is supposed to be a party with VIPs. You're telling me it's you and Epstein?'', he told the New York Times. Epstein also attended an event at Mar-a-Lago in 2000 with Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for grooming teenage girls to be abused by Epstein. Mr Trump and Epstein's relationship took a turn, however. They are said to have become rivals in 2004, each going up against each other to buy up Palm Beach properties, but the reason for their falling out is not fully understood. After Epstein's arrest, Mr Trump distanced himself from the sex offender. 'I was not a fan,' he told reporters in July 2019. 'I had a falling out with him a long time ago.' On Maxwell's arrest in 2020, his words were warmer. 'I haven't really been following it too much. I just wish her well, frankly,' he said at the time. 'I've met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach, and I guess they lived in Palm Beach. But I wish her well, whatever it is,' he added. In 2022 Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison after she was found guilty of sex trafficking. She was accused of conspiring with Epstein to set up a scheme to lure young girls into sexual relationships with Epstein from 1994 to 2004 in New York, Florida, New Mexico and the US Virgin Islands. But despite distancing himself from the sex offender, Mr Trump's name came up at Maxwell's 2021 trial, when a woman testifying under the pseudonym Jane said Epstein took her to meet Mr Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort when she was 14. She did not allege any improper behaviour from Mr Trump. Mr Trump insisted he had never been on Epstein's plane or private island, but flight logs released during the trial suggested the US president flew on the plane seven times. According to the logs, on at least one of the trips between New York and Florida, Mr Trump was accompanied by his former wife Marla Maples and their daughter Tiffany. Another log listed his son Eric as a passenger. Other notable passengers on Epstein's plane included former President Bill Clinton, Robert F Kennedy Jr, Prince Andrew and actor Kevin Spacey. Virginia Roberts Giuffre, an Epstein victim who killed herself last month, claimed she was working at Mar-a-Lago as a locker room attendant when she was 'recruited' by Maxwell. There were no new revelations about Mr Trump's relationship with Epstein in the files released by the Biden administration. But last year Stacey Williams, a former Sports Illustrated model who dated Epstein, told The Guardian the financier had taken her to Mr Trump's Fifth Avenue penthouse in 1993 and encouraged Mr Trump to grope her in a 'twisted game'. Mr Trump denied the allegations. Weeks later Michael Wolff released tapes of Epstein describing himself as 'Donald's closest friend for 10 years'. Mr Wolff, who has written several books about Mr Trump, said the recordings were from 2017 when he was having a discussion about writing Epstein's biography. Karoline Leavitt, who was the Trump campaign national press secretary, accused Mr Wolff of 'outlandish false smears' and engaging in 'blatant election interference on behalf of Kamala Harris'. Mr Musk's bombshell claim was part of a spectacular war of words between the world's most powerful men, with the president claiming the Tesla boss has 'Trump derangement syndrome', and Mr Musk insisting Mr Trump only won the election because of him. Earlier in the day Mr Trump told reporters during a sit-down with Friedrich Merz, Germany's new chancellor: 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore.' In February, Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, pledged to release all of the information the government holds on Epstein, which have come to be known as the Epstein files. She invited a select group of pro-Maga influencers to the White House where they were handed binders containing what she said was 'Phase One' of the full document release. However, the 200-page document contained only phone-book contacts and flight logs, most of which have been available since 2015. No date has been set for releasing the remaining files. As Elon Musk, Trump fight on Twitter, here's a look back at SpaceX CEO's visits to Mar-a-Lago
From bromance to nomance: The Donald Trump-Elon Musk fight is on. The SpaceX CEO and owner of social media site X posted a "big bomb" tweet linking President Donald Trump with the infamous Jeffrey Epstein files and ending the post with a passive-aggressive farewell. On June 5, Musk posted: "Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!" Within 17 minutes, the tweet had 6.8 million views, 132,000 likes, 63,000 retweets and 34,000 comments on X. Trump did not stay silent, firing back on social media: "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!" In another tweet, Trump states: "Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!" How did it get to this point? Musk, the Tesla CEO, was critical of Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," a tax bill that narrowly passed the U.S. House of Representatives on May 22. At more than 1,000 pages long, the Big Beautiful Bill Act will now move on to the Senate. Musk also left his post with the Trump administration — leading the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE. Less than six months ago, Musk appeared at Trump's Inauguration Day events and has since held press conferences in the Oval Office at the White House and even flown aboard Air Force One to Trump's private club, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. On some occasions, his son, Little X Musk, accompanied him on these high-profile visits with Trump. Below is a roundup of the times Elon Musk, SpaceX and Tesla CEO, has visited Mar-a-Lago. When Trump was president from 2017 to 2021, Mar-a-Lago became known as the 'Southern White House' or the "Winter White House" because of his frequent trips there. It's a private club so generally Mar-a-Lago is not open to the public. Mar-a-Lago closes on Mother's Day after the traditional final brunch of the social season and reopens on Halloween. At 17 acres, Mar-a-Lago is a big estate, but there's a lot going on there. The private club has 500 members. Amenities include tennis, the Beach Club, croquet court and a spa. The exact size of the living quarters of Mar-a-Lago isn't known — but it is speculated to be somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet, according to Palm Beach Post and Palm Beach Daily News coverage. So far, Trump has spent all but three weekends of his second presidency in Florida, skipping out on Easter weekend at Mar-a-Lago for the first time in years. On two of the weekends that he returned home, there were nationwide Donald Trump-Elon Musk protests, with some down the road from Mar-a-Lago. Since Jan. 20, Trump has visited his home state of Florida 11 times and his Mar-a-Lago estate 10 times. Here's a recap: Weekend of Jan. 24, 2025, marked Trump's first return to Florida since Inauguration Day. Trump spoke at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami, Florida — days after Inauguration Day events and the same weekend as Donald and Melania Trump's 20th wedding anniversary. The couple married Jan. 25, 2005, in Palm Beach with a reception at Mar-a-Lago. Weekend of Jan. 31, 2025, marked Trump's second return to Florida and his first trip home to Mar-a-Lago as the 47th president of the United States. Weekend of Feb. 7, 2025, marked Trump's third visit to Florida and his second visit to Mar-a-Lago. He typically attends an annual Super Bowl watch party at Trump International Palm Beach Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Instead, he made history by becoming the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl. Donald Trump Jr., three of his children, girlfriend Bettina Anderson, Ivanka Trump and her son Theo Kushner, and Eric and Lara Trump also attended Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Weekend of Feb. 14, 2025, marked Trump's fourth visit to Florida and his third visit to Mar-a-Lago. Following Super Bowl weekend, he attended the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, with Eric and Lara Trump and their two children, Luke and Carolina Trump. Donald Trump also celebrated Presidents' Day, as he typically does, at Mar-a-Lago. Weekend of Feb. 28, 2025, marked Trump's fifth visit to Florida and his fourth visit to Mar-a-Lago. Trump's time in Florida the weekend of Feb. 28 was book-ended by two controversial moments. Before he left for Florida, he had a tense meeting at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. And as he prepared to fly to Palm Beach, controversial influencer and self-described misogynist Andrew Tate and his brother landed in nearby Fort Lauderdale, after the Trump administration allegedly pressured Romania to lift the brothers' travel ban, due to crimes they've been charged with in Romania. Weekend of March 7, 2025, marked Trump's sixth visit to Florida and his fifth visit to Mar-a-Lago. First lady Melania Trump's father Viktor Knavs and Elon Musk accompanied Trump on Air Force One to Palm Beach. Weekend of March 14, 2025, marked Trump's seventh visit to Florida and his sixth visit to Mar-a-Lago, right before St. Patrick's Day and ahead of the birthdays of his youngest son Barron Trump and father-in-law Viktor Knavs. Elon Musk and his son, Little X Musk, accompanied Donald Trump on Air Force One to Palm Beach. Weekend of March 28, 2025, marked Trump's eighth visit to Florida and his seventh visit to Mar-a-Lago. He arrived on the heels of a scandal involving security officials in his administration — including Florida's Marco Rubio and Mike Waltz — who mistakenly added a journalist to a group chat in which they were planning U.S. attacks on Iranian-backed forces in Yemen. A "Saturday Night Live" cold open skit with Oscar winner Mikey Madison poked fun of the texting chat. Weekend of April 3, 2025, marked Trump's ninth visit to Florida and his eighth visit to Mar-a-Lago. On this weekend, Trump managed a golf trifecta — he attended, played or competed at all three of his Trump National Golf Club sites in Florida. Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami, where he appeared, also hosted the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tournament that weekend. On April 5 and April 6, 2025, protesters converged in about 1,300 Trump-Elon Musk "Hands Off, Fight Back" rallies nationwide, with 45 in Florida alone and some down the road from Mar-a-Lago. Weekend of April 11, 2025, marked Trump's 10th visit to his home state and his ninth visit to Mar-a-Lago. Trump was the named keynote speaker and DOGE chief Elon Musk was slated to receive an award at a Palm Beach County Republicans event at Mar-a-Lago. Trump arrived aboard Air Force One with Elon Musk and his young son, Little X Musk. Together, they rode the presidential limousine, known as The Beast, to Mar-a-Lago. Weekend of May 1, 2025, marked Trump's 11th (and final) visit to his home state and the 10th visit to Mar-a-Lago since he was sworn in. Vice President JD Vance also flew in to Palm Beach via Air Force Two but left the state before Trump's arrival. For a second time, Trump returned to his home state the same weekend there were nationwide rallies and protests aimed at Trump and Musk. Since President Donald Trump's second term started Jan. 20, 2025, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has visited his home and private club, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, a number of times. Big Dog Ranch Rescue announced a fundraising weekend raising $4.3 million at its annual Wine, Women and Shoes benefit event with surprise visits from President Donald Trump and SpaceX, Tesla CEO Elon Musk along with Big Dog Ranch Rescue board member and host Lara Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on March 1 and March 2, 2025. Shown are Lara Trump and veteran John Wayne in support of veteran service dog training program. Since Jan. 20, Donald Trump has visited his home state of Florida 11 times and his Mar-a-Lago estate 10 times, sometimes with Elon Musk deplaning from Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport. Elon Musk has accompanied the president to Palm Beach via Air Force One more times than first lady Melania Trump and their only child Barron Trump. In fact, the last official appearance with Donald Trump, Melania Trump and Barron Trump on board Air Force One together from Palm Beach International Airport was ahead of Inauguration Day festivities.
