Phillies and Mets Expected to Get Into Bidding War Over Same Relievers at Trade Deadline

Phillies and Mets Expected to Get Into Bidding War Over Same Relievers at Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for more bullpen help at the MLB trade deadline. As is the case every year, they won't be alone in their pursuit of high-leverage arms out of the bullpen.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic pointed out that the Phillies will target high-leverage relievers at the MLB trade deadline. However, he makes a point to mention they won't be alone, specifically competing with the New York Mets.
"According to industry sources," Bowden writes, "both organizations are focused on high-leverage arms and will be chasing similar relievers."
With the Phillies and Mets both targeting the same relievers, there could be a bidding war for the top options. From Ryan Helsley and Pete Fairbanks to Mason Miller and Felix Bautista, the Phillies and Mets will both be active in the same trade market.
That's bad news for the Phillies, as the competition between the two could lead to an overpay in a trade. With how the Phillies have approached recent trade deadlines, there is a possibility that they give up too much to acquire one of their top options.

The Phillies' bullpen has been a mess. From Jordan Romano sitting in the double-digit ERAs through the first month of the year to Jose Alvarado getting suspended for 80 games for PED use, the Phillies' bullpen has been shaky.

While relievers like Tanner Banks and Orion Kerkering have shown interesting stuff for the Phillies, neither is trustworthy enough to be a high-leverage arm for the Phillies in the postseason. Matt Strahm and Romano have those roles, and in Alvarado's absence, another reliever is likely to join the fray.
Bowden's report is a sign that the trade deadline could get tricky for the Phillies, as not only will they compete with other teams around baseball, but they'll have to compete with the Mets for a lot of their top targets.
The bidding war that will occur between the Mets and Phillies is a tough situation to be in. While there are plenty of interesting options, a lot of their targets overlap with the Mets' targets.

Kamilla Cardoso Sends Three-Word Message to Angel Reese on Wednesday

Kamilla Cardoso Sends Three-Word Message to Angel Reese on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky lost to the New York Liberty on Tuesday by a final score of 85-66. The Sky are now 2-6 on the season. Advertisement Chicago All-Star Angel Reese has gotten off to a rough start this season. While the lefty is averaging 10.1 points and 12.1 rebounds, she's shooting only 35.8% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 67.7% from the free-throw line. Reese has been getting bashed for her poor shooting splits this season, but the LSU star is staying strong in the heat of adversity. On Wednesday, Reese posted the following caption on Instagram along with 14 pictures: "Every successful person you admire survived a season you didn't see. Idols turn into rivals. Everything becomes about survival." Several people commented on Reese's post, including her teammate, Sky center Kamilla Cardoso. Advertisement "Keep going 5!" Cardoso wrote, followed by the heart emoji. Kamilla Cardoso has Angel Reese's back. Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Reese and Cardoso were drafted by the Sky in the first round of last year's draft. They are being tasked with turning the Chicago franchise around. Cardoso is averaging 10.5 points and 6.5 rebounds this season while shooting 50.7% from the floor and 75.0% from the foul line. She's having much more success shooting from the field than Reese. However, Reese shot the ball well against New York on Tuesday. She finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes while shooting 8-of-13 overall. The Sky are back in action on Friday when they take on the Atlanta Dream for another Commissioner's Cup game. It will be fascinating to see if Reese can have another good shooting game. Reebok CEO's Opinion of Angel Reese Made Clear With Strong Comments

Reebok CEO's Opinion of Angel Reese Made Clear With Strong Comments originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was the first basketball player Reebok signed after the company relaunched its basketball brand. Advertisement Reese's first signature shoe will be coming out later this season, Reebok CEO Todd Krinsky told Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. During his interview with Vorkunov, Krinsky opened up about why Reese is the basketball player he's building around. "If you think about when we've really been successful, it's been having these bigger-than-life personalities that are embracing on- and off-the-court culture," Krinsky said. "Shaq was like that. He was larger than life. He wasn't just a center. He transformed the game. And he had this bigger-than-life personality." "Allen Iverson, we signed him in '96. Obviously, he changed the way players look and dress. He changed the culture of the game. And I think that's what Angel is." Angel Reese agreed to a multi-year endorsement contract extension with Reebok in Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Reese has over five million followers on Instagram and over 690,000 followers on X. Advertisement The former LSU forward made the All-Star team last year as a rookie and won the rebounding title. In 42 career games with the Sky, Reese is averaging 12.9 points and 12.9 rebounds. She has already established herself as one of the top rebounders in WNBA history. "Angel is a provocative disruptor," Krinsky said. "But she doesn't do it just for clicks or whatever. She does it because she really has this very, kind of unique, rebellious attitude. And those are the type of athletes that — athletes have something to say. "Athletes are more than just athletes, away from the court. That's the formula of what's really worked for us in the past, so we can build these icons, and she's definitely one of them. She fits the Shaq/AI mentality." Advertisement Reese signed a four-year, $324,383 contract with the Sky last year after getting drafted in April. The 23-year-old then agreed to a multi-year endorsement contract extension with Reebok in October 2024.
