The guy who was most recently Scotland's first-choice goalkeeper is 42 and currently out injured. His likely replacement doesn't have a club. The next two in line - depending on your view of the pecking order - have been in and out of the Kilmarnock team this season and made just a handful of senior appearances respectively. All other contenders for the position are either out of form or out of favour. That led head coach Steve Clarke to recently suggest that Scotland's lack of options in goal has been an oversight.Angus Gunn will likely be the preferred choice for the impending friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein. But is he the answer longer-term? And if not, who is?
What did Clarke say about it?
The Scotland head coach admitted concern at the dearth of goalkeepers coming through when announcing the squad for these matches, adding that it had been "probably an oversight" given the quality of options over the past two decades. He pointed to the likes of the injured Craig Gordon, and the retired David Marshall and Allan McGregor as the kind of talent that currently just isn't there. The answer, in his view, lies in giving young goalkeepers the opportunity to play competitively, earlier."A lot tend to be kept in squads to sit on the bench," Clarke said. "They are working with good people and learning good habits but only in training."Maybe we can find a way to get these young goalkeepers out to clubs in League 1, League 2, the Championship at an earlier age where they play and do well."The boys need a chance and, when they get a chance, they need to take it."
Gunn encouraged by younger deputies
Gunn returns to the squad for these friendlies and seems likely to start despite currently being a free agent after leaving Norwich City. With 15 caps, he was first choice at Euro 2024 before injury struck, allowing Gordon to reclaim his spot. Now it's his chance to turn the tables.Uncapped duo Robby McCrorie and Cieran Slicker provide back-up, with the latter having played just 10 minutes as a substitute for Ipswich Town all season.McCrorie made 20 Premiership starts for Kilmarnock, while the majority of Scottish top-flight goalkeepers come from other countries.Other recent squad members such as Rangers Liam Kelly and Zander Clark at Hearts are also lacking game time."I wouldn't say there has been an issue," Gunn said on Tuesday. "I think the nation's been blessed with top goalkeepers for many years. Things happen in cycles. "The three guys here training with us this week all look top-quality young keepers but it's about experience and game time in big games."I was quite inexperienced when I came into the squad. Playing at the Euros was a big learning curve for me and a big opportunity. "Only things like that can help and benefit goalkeepers and without experience you're not going to get any better."
What other options are out there?
While it often proves futile to speculate on the next big thing, Clarke clearly thinks hope lies with Callan McKenna, who has joined the squad this week in training. The 18-year-old was number one for Queen's Park in the Scottish Championship at the start of season 2023-24, before moving to join English Premier League side Bournemouth, where he is part of their development squad. The fact that Clarke has brought him into the fold supports the idea that experience of the international environment is key but not just in training over the longer term.McCrorie and Slicker will undoubtedly do everything in their power to stake their claims over the coming days, but Clarke's openness on this subject suggests he believes he needs more options longer-term.That said, with World Cup qualification next on the agenda after this friendly double-header, Clarke will surely look to rely on experience in such a key position for the opening fixtures away to Denmark and Belarus.

Torino part ways with manager Vanoli

June 5 (Reuters) - Torino have parted ways with manager Paolo Vanoli, who had one year left on his contract, the Serie A club said on Thursday. Vanoli was appointed a year ago but after Torino finished last season in 11th place, well away from the relegation battle but never in the mix for European qualification, the club have decided the time is right to make a change. According to Italian media reports, former Lazio manager Marco Baroni is the likely replacement for 52-year-old Vanoli.

'We need to back him now and hope he delivers'

We asked for your views on Russell Martin's appointment as Rangers head are some of your comments: Harris: I'm happy that we finally got a manager but I was hoping for Why appoint the man that threw Southampton into shambles?Jeff: Well hopefully he is not one dimensional. 3-5-2 seems to be a good formation when playing Pretty underwhelming appointment, however, I hope the fans get behind him and give him a chance to prove Time will tell, we need to back him now and hope he delivers. Read comparisons to big Ange Postecoglou this week, if true it could make him the right This is a brilliant appointment. A studious coach that has the ability to man manage and also coach technically very well without overly complicating the game. He earns the respect of his players and I feel he will bring our great club the success we have yearned for these past few years.

'The myth' about Russell's tactics

What is the "myth" about new Rangers head coach Russell Martin's tactics?Scottish coach and analyst John Walker feels there is a misconception with how people view former Swansea City and Southampton boss Martin's possession-based style, insisting it doesn't just mean the ball is just "passed about the back"."Martin's football is possession based, but it's attacking football," Walker said on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "If he can get it forward in two passes, it's going forward in two passes. "People keep coming at me with the same thing, 'he's never played against a low block'. He's played against a low block loads because teams were scared of how his teams were playing. "If teams want to drop into a low block and fear Rangers, that suits Martin. That's what Martin wants. That's where Rangers will see a lot of goals being scored. "The flipside of that is there'll be a high defensive line, there'll be high risk, there'll be one-v-one defending at the back. And that's where you see Martin's horrendous goals against stats."Do the Premier League struggles of Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou prove managerial performance in England and Scotland's top flights is incomparable?Large numbers of Rangers fans appear to be underwhelmed at the appointment of former player Martin as their new head is somewhat fuelled by the ex-Scotland defender's gruelling experience as a manager in England's top won just once in 16 games before sacking Martin in December, but Walker feels the Premier League is "just not a comparable metric for how successful you can be in Scotland".Despite winning the Europa League, Postecoglou, a hugely successful Celtic manager, oversaw Tottenham's worst ever Premier League season last term, with the team finishing the 2022-23 campaign, Celtic boss Rodgers had Leicester heading towards relegation when he departed in the April. The Foxes ultimately went next move would be a return to Parkhead, where he has resumed cleaning up domestic prizes."Martin's Southampton experience rubs people the wrong way," said Walker."Rodgers had good seasons in England, but he also had bad seasons. With Postecoglou, league wise, this is a terrible time at Tottenham. "But he dominated and revolutionised Scottish football for two years, so there just is no comparison."
