New Delhi: A Delhi court recently observed that the abhorrence society as a whole has towards sexual predators targeting children should find reflection in the judgments of the courts.Awarding five years of imprisonment for the sexual assault of a six-year-old child to a 27-year-old man under provisions of the
Pocso Act
, additional sessions judge Manoj Kumar said that the alarming rise in offences against children and society's cry for justice for such children led to the formulation of such law.According to the prosecution, the man, who was the neighbour of the child's family, called her on the pretext of offering her sweets at his home. There, he removed her clothes and touched her private parts. The court was hearing the arguments on the quantum of sentence against the man who was convicted under Section 10 (
aggravated sexual assault
) of the Pocso Act. "The purpose of the criminal justice system is not only to attain catharsis by handing down proportional punishment to the offender but also to rehabilitate the victim, who is scarred physically and mentally, forever," it stated."If we fail to do so, we are also abdicating our duties towards the child victim, whose psychological well-being has been dented and may have longer repercussions," the court said.Earlier, additional public prosecutor Vikas Singh said that the convict did not deserve any leniency and that he should be punished severely to send a strong deterrent message. The court also awarded Rs three lakh compensation to the survivor.
