When the Edmonton Oilers face elimination in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday night against the Florida Panthers, either Stuart Skinner or Calvin Pickard will lead them on to the ice as their starting goaltender.
The defending champion Panthers have no such debate. Two-time Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky has started 63 consecutive playoff games going back to early in the playoffs in 2023, and he is a big reason they are on the cusp of winning a second consecutive title.

'He puts so much time into his focus and his ability and then the experience that he has, so there's a calmness that comes with Sergei that's spread throughout the team,' coach Paul Maurice said Sunday. 'He's the incredible, elite player that gets totally underappreciated: taken for granted, I guess, by us because he's so consistent with his game.'
Bobrovsky has stopped 165 of the 181 shots on net during the final, allowing 16 goals with a save percentage of .912. Skinner and Pickard have combined to stop 141 of 163, allowing 22 with respective save percentages of .860 and .878.
Many of those goals scored by Florida and allowed by Edmonton had more to do with the skaters in front of whoever is in the crease, hence a rotating door at hockey's most important position in the final. Skinner started the first four, Pickard entered Game 4 and won in relief, then lost Game 5.
Skinner will probably get the nod in Game 6, but coach Kris Knoblauch is not saying which way he's leaning.

'It's not an easy decision,' Knoblauch said. 'We've got two goalies that have shown that they can play extremely well, win hockey games and we feel that no matter who we choose, they can win the game."
That confidence is even stronger around the Panthers, given how steady Bobrovsky has been. Even though Game 5 turned into a rout, Maurice credited the goalie known as 'Bob' for a handful of important early saves to make it possible.
It is something Bobrovsky has done all series, all playoffs and all season for a long time.
'He keeps us in the game so many times at key moments and is making huge saves," top defenseman Gustav Forsling said. "He always gives us a chance to win every night. He's been amazing for us.'

Bobrovsky at 36 is adored by teammates. Aaron Ekblad, who has played with him for six seasons, called him simply the best.
'We love him,' Ekblad said. 'There's no doubt about it.'
That admiration has been earned. Bobrovsky has developed a reputation for his tireless work on dry land and the practice habits on the ice that have translated into results: a lot of winning.
It's no coincidence the Panthers have won 10 of 11 playoff series since Bobrovsky took over for Alex Lyon three games into the first round in 2023.
'He just sticks kind of to the same routine, and his preparation is unlike anything I've ever seen while being in this league,' forward Evan Rodrigues said. 'It almost becomes routine some of the incredible saves he makes.'

There is nothing routine about how the Oilers' goaltending has developed over the course of the final. Skinner and Pickard have each been hung out to dry by turnovers, mistakes and missed coverages.
They have also made some unexpected stops along the way to keep this series going.
'They've both been amazing," veteran winger Corey Perry said. "It doesn't matter who's in the net or who's back there. We have trust in both of them.'
Maurice, who has coached more games in the NHL than anyone but nine-time Stanley Cup champion Scotty Bowman, has made it clear he knows nothing about goaltending and has no interest in learning about it. But he has defended all the goaltenders in this final between 'two really powerful offensive teams' with plenty of star power.

Still, Bobrovsky has the ability to swing it in Florida's direction with another of the performances his team has come to expect from him.
"His ability to focus is trained — maybe it's a talent," Maurice said. 'If one gets by him that he doesn't like, it has nothing to do with what's going to happen next.'

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Orlando Magic shocked the NBA world on Sunday morning, pulling off the first blockbuster trade of the NBA offseason. Desmond Bane is headed to Orlando in exchange for four unprotected first-round picks, a pick swap, Cole Anthony and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Advertisement This move comes on the heels of disappointing first round playoff losses for both teams, and it addresses glaring needs for both teams. The Magic needed another perimeter shooter and scorer to go along with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, and now they have that in Bane. On the other side, the Grizzlies needed to shake something up in an attempt to go backwards to get some more room to take a leap next year. The core of Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Bane seemed to have hit its ceiling, and now the Grizzlies have some breathing room to make a big roster pivot. How did each team make out in the deal? Here are grades for both teams for this Father's Day blockbuster. Magic get more star power, much-needed shooter A deal like this for Orlando feels like it needs to be discussed in two parts. Advertisement First, there is the addition of Bane, which looks like a home run. He is one of the elite perimeter shooters in the NBA and can work both on and off the ball. Bane can shoot off the catch and on the move and will give Orlando some immediate artillery on the perimeter. Bane can also handle the ball at times and initiate the offense, taking some burden off of Banchero and Wagner. With this extra ball handler, the Magic can use Banchero down low to attack mismatches, and they now have a true perimeter threat to deploy with him in the two-man game. Bane and Banchero are a great fit together on paper and it will be fascinating to see how they work together next season and beyond. Wagner's playmaking should also help set Bane up as an off-ball scorer, a role that he thrived in playing alongside Morant over the last few seasons. The Magic now have a lethal starting core of Banchero, Bane, Wagner and Jalen Suggs, which should immediately help them take a step forward next season. On the other side, the price of the trade has to bring the grade down a bit. The Magic gave up four unprotected first-round picks in this deal. Four!! Those include the No. 16 pick this year in a draft rich with potential role players. Crucially, it also included the Phoenix Suns' unprotected pick in 2026. Advertisement With the Suns coming off of a nightmare season and steamrolling toward a breakup with Kevin Durant, there is a chance that next season could go very poorly as well. That pick could end up being a valuable asset in the lottery in a 2026 NBA Draft that is expected to be full of talent. Giving up Cole Anthony and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as a salary match isn't as big of a deal considering what Bane brings on the court, but what happens if this core tops out short of a title? The Magic now don't have many avenues to pivot. This trade is just as much a bet on Banchero becoming a true superstar as it is on Bane lifting the Magic in the present and the future. While that could very well pay off, it's worth questioning whether Bane is the level of player that warrants a gamble this expensive. Grade: B- Grizzlies ready to build around Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. Dale Zanine-Imagn Images The Grizzlies clearly had to pivot after getting swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder this season. They already made a big move to fire head coach Taylor Jenkins near the end of the regular season, and now they have made their big move to shake up the team. Advertisement It doesn't come as much of a surprise that Bane was moved. Morant is a beloved athlete in Memphis and Jackson has flashed so much two-way upside over the last few years, which left the TCU product as the odd man out. Now, the Grizzlies have plenty of flexibility to build around their two big-money stars. They get an extra draft pick this season to help supplement Morant and Jackson, and the Suns pick in 2026 could end up being very valuable as discussed above. Caldwell-Pope is on a bad contract and has a player option at the end of next season, but he could be moved next offseason on an expiring deal. He underperformed last season, but there is a chance that he could rebound in a better offensive ecosystem in Memphis. Anthony is on a team-friendly contract and has a club option after next season, so the Grizzlies have some control there. This opens up a lot of room for the Grizzlies to make a big move down the line, or to use the draft assets that they just brought in to make another swing this offseason. Kevin Durant, anyone? The first full day of action at the inaugural edition of the 32-team club tournament saw newly crowned European champions PSG produce a scintillating 4-0 rout of Atletico Madrid after Bayern's double-digit drubbing of Auckland City. Could Shohei Ohtani return as a pitcher soon? Dodgers manager Dave Roberts teases comeback
Shohei Ohtani is now a year and a half into his Los Angeles Dodgers career without throwing a pitch from an MLB mound. That might finally change soon. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated an Ohtani return could be near while speaking with reporters ahead of Sunday's game against the San Francisco Giants. He announced Ohtani would be throwing to live hitters early next week, then was asked if that would be his final step before making a full return to the mound. Advertisement The first, and most important, word of Roberts' answer: "Potentially." His full response: "Potentially. He's getting very eager, getting very exited. I think that there's a point in hearing from Shohei that the effort that it takes to throw live and play a game, let's use those bullets in a game. So he's getting very excited." Ohtani was expected to be a hitter only in his first season with the Dodgers, but the team hoped he could resume the two-way responsibilities that made him a superstar by Opening Day of this year. That obviously hasn't happened, as a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder sustained in the 2024 World Series threw off his offseason rehab timetable. The Dodgers have been as hazy as possible when it comes to Ohtani's current timetable, though it's well-established he won't be going on a rehab assignment because his bat is too valuable. Roberts' comments on Sunday indicated the date might not be too far ahead in the future. Advertisement It's been a chaotic time in general for the Dodgers' rotation, which is currently without Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki and many more. Glasnow and Snell could both be a month away, while Roberts said Sunday that Sasaki has been shut down from throwing, with no timetable for a return. When asked if Sasaki, currently on the IL with a right shoulder impingement, was no longer in the team's long-term plans for 2025, Roberts answered in the affirmative. The rotation is at least set to get a boost soon, as Emmet Sheehan, out since spring training of 2024 with Tommy John surgery, is currently finishing up a rehab assignment. Roberts said there is a "very high likelihood" of him getting activated to fill a rotation hole on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
