Lok Sabha panel flags understaffed cybercrime units
The parliamentary standing committee on women empowerment has raised concerns about severe understaffing in cybercrime units and a perceived lax attitude towards online crimes targeting women and children.
The panel, during its fourth meeting convened on Monday, heard briefings from the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) and the ministry of home affairs (MHA) on 'cyber crimes and cyber safety of women'. Cyber experts and NGOs also presented their views.
Multiple lawmakers, speaking anonymously, said the committee confronted ministry representatives over critical shortcomings.
An MP told HT that the MHA unit specifically handling cybercrimes against women operates with inadequate staff. 'We unequivocally said it's unacceptable and that the staff should be increased as the ministry is failing in keeping a check on such crimes,' she said.
HT had previously reported on May 7 that the D Purandeswari-headed committee, in its first meeting, discussed about cybercrimes against women –– including the online harassment faced by Himanshi Narwal, the widow of Lt. Vinay Narwal who was killed in the Pahalgam terror attack.
The lawmakers, on Tuesday, said that said women and children face increasingly violent and sexually explicit online abuse that has spread beyond major cities into rural areas. According to the MPs, the panel told ministry representatives there is a 'dire' need to speed up action against cyberbullying and harassment, criticizing a 'lax' official approach that often allows online crimes to escalate into real-world stalking and harassment
The committee cited the case of foreign secretary Vikram Misri and his daughter, who faced intense online abuse and trolling in May, following Operation Sindoor and the subsequent cessation of hostilities with Pakistan.
'If the foreign secretary and his daughter are not safe from these cyberbullies then imagine what happens to the common women and children,' a second MP who took part in the meeting said.
A key issue raised by the committee was the fragmented legal structure across ministries. 'One thought that came up was, can we have one legal... one act which would control cybercrime and abuse against women and children,' the second MP said.
The committee also discussed the limited awareness of government programmes among rural women, particularly those who are technologically challenged. 'There is cyber security, but is that enough? That is not enough is what they felt,' the second MP added.
Both MeitY and MHA have asked for written suggestions from the panel to be submitted within a week. The committee decided the ministries, collaborating with NGOs, will develop solutions to mitigate cybercrime risks. These include technical and legal mechanisms aimed at preventing such crimes and ensuring immediate assistance reaches victims of online abuse.

Mahalingam in establishing 35 educational institutions since 1957 right till his nineties, enabling youth to transform into enlightened citizens. Shankar Vanavarayar, president, Kumaraguru Institutions said the award instituted in 2014 was meant to recognise the services of exalted personalities in the realms of spirituality, enterprise and literature.

She claimed that soon after Combs started paying her rent, it made it harder for her to say no to his demands. She feared that if she refused, Combs would stop paying the rent, and she would lose the home where she lived with her son. But Combs' prosecutors defended him, saying the women who took part in "freak-offs" agreed to do it willingly and were not forced. Last week, she alleged that after a vacation to Turks and Caicos in March 2023, the two agreed to a two-year "love contract." In this, Combs would pay her $10,000 every month for two years so that she could use that money to pay her house rent, according to a report by HT. Giving credit to Operation Sindoor for exposing China and Türkiye as a threat to India's sovereignty and trade, Swadeshi Jagran Manch, the economic wing of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), on Thursday (June 12, 2025) said that India must see this as a wake-up call to totally shun foreign goods and become self-reliant. While launching a pan-India drive to create awareness about manufacture and use of 'swadeshi' goods in Delhi on Thursday (June 12), the SJM also said that it will awaken people about domination of e-commerce websites like Amazon, Walmart (Flipkart), etc. in the Indian market causing heavy losses to local traders. Speaking to The Hindu, SJM's national co-convener Ashwani Mahajan said the drive for mass awareness to shun foreign goods and e-commerce platforms is named as 'Swadeshi Suraksha evam Swavlamban Abhiyan'. The launch was attended by industrialists, traders, farmers and workers from across the country. 'Leaders present in the meeting expressed their views that today is the most opportune to start this campaign, giving call to all the citizens of India, to boycott use of foreign goods and services, and adopt Swadeshi. 'It was also expressed that defence equipment developed and produced indigenously were far superior to defence products supplied by China and Turkey and used by Pakistan. The impact of the present trade war, which has changed the world order by destroying global supply chains, was also highlighted,' said Mr. Mahajan. He added that Operation Sindoor disrupted global supply chains and also exposed China and Türkiye as a threat to the country's sovereignty and trade. The participants decided to boycott the goods from the two countries and also create nationwide awareness urging people for the same. 'Given the scenario created by President Donald Trump's administration of raising tariffs, imposition of tax on remittances sent by people of non-US origin, SJM has also given a call to people of this country to boycott e-commerce companies like Amazon, Flipkart-Walmart and many others with foreign funding,' Mr. Mahajan said. He added that the organisation would request the Government of India to impose high tax on outflow of foreign exchange in the form of royalty, dividends, technical fee, outflow of Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), based on the principle of reciprocity.
