US calls on India, Pakistan for immediate de-escalation, backs direct dialogue between the two sides
Washington/New Delhi/Islamabad, May 8 (UNI) The US today called on India and Pakistan to immediately de-escalate the situation and backed direct dialogue between the two sides and efforts to improve communication.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio today conveyed this when speaking with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and with Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif.
US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce in a statement said:
'Secretary Marco Rubio spoke today with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The Secretary emphasized the need for immediate de-escalation.
'He expressed U.S. support for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encouraged continued efforts to improve communications.
'The Secretary reiterated his condolences for the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam and reaffirmed the United States' commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism.'
EAM Jaishankar, in a post on X, said:
'Spoke with US @SecRubiothis evening.
'Deeply appreciate US commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism.
'Underlined India's targeted and measured response to cross-border terrorism.
'Will firmly counter any attempts at escalation.'
In his phone call with the Pakistani PM, Rubio 'emphasized the need for immediate de-escalation. He expressed U.S. support for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encouraged continued efforts to improve communications.'
'The Secretary expressed sorrow for the reported loss of civilian lives in the current conflict.
'He reiterated his calls for Pakistan to take concrete steps to end any support for terrorist groups.'
According to Dunya News, the Pakistani PM told the US Secretary of State that 'India's attacks had violated Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, while gravely jeopardizing peace and stability in the South Asia region.'
He also 'reaffirmed Pakistan's firm resolve to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs, and stressed that Pakistan reserved the right to act in self-defence'.

Kashmiri parents urge PM Modi, EAM Jaishankar to evacuate students from Iran
Scores of parents from Kashmir, whose children are studying in Iran, have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and foreign minister S Jaishankar to ensure immediate evacuation of their children from Iran as they have been making frequent distress calls to their families here. As per unofficial estimates from education consultants, over 1,500 students from India are doing MBBS in Iran, of which over 60% are from J&K. Hundreds are pursuing other courses and higher studies in Iran. A good number of these are in Tehran, which came under Israeli attack recently. Besides students, hundreds of pilgrims and businessmen from Kashmir and other parts of India frequently travel to Iran every month. Some parents gathered here at the Press Enclave on Sunday demanding immediate shifting of students to safe locations within Iran and ensuring their evaluation as soon as possible. "We request our prime minister and foreign minister to evacuate our children as soon as possible. GoI is capable of doing so as they evacuated students during the Russia-Ukraine crisis," said Suhail Muzammil Qadri, one of the aggrieved parents. Sania, who is pursuing MBBS in Tehran and is currently there, says that the students have been unable to sleep over the past three days. India, US close to finalising 'early tranche' of trade deal
File photo: Union minister Piyush Goyal with US secretary Howard Lutnick (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: India and the US are close to working out the final contours of the "early tranche" of the proposed bilateral trade agreement and are now starting work on the possible text for the deal, which is likely to be finalised before July 9, when American president Donald Trump plans to remove the freeze on reciprocal tariffs. Govt is likely to offer concessions for some of the farm products that are of interest to the US, along with concessions on automobiles, in return for getting a 10 per cent duty - Trump's baseline tariff - for labour-intensive products, such as textiles, footwear and, possibly, certain auto parts. With the current US administration lacking Congressional mandate to finalise trade deals, a zero-duty regime will have to wait until things settle down in the US. With a 10 per cent levy on products where India has a comparative advantage, the government is hoping to make Indian exports more competitive, especially if the reciprocal tariffs kick in. In any case, India, with 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs, including the 10 per cent baseline duty, was seen to enjoy a competitive advantage over several countries with which its exports compete. Besides, with sanitary and phytosanitary standards and technical barriers to trade also discussed during the last round of negotiations with American officials between June 4 and 10, the government is hoping that some of the issues faced by exporters shipping goods to the US will also be addressed. Digital trade, customs and trade facilitation and the legal framework were part of the discussions in the Capital earlier this month. Government sources indicated that India is keen for a text to be ready in some form before the deal is made public. This is seen to be crucial as the current US administration has been making announcements without the draft text in place and then claiming victory. Even the Chinese authorities have had to contend with the claims made by Trump on social media after the last dialogue. The announcement with the UK was seen to be more structured. By all accounts, several issues, including the court ruling on reciprocal tariffs for which Trump had invoked emergency provisions, will, however, play a part in finalising the early tranche for which a Fall (Sept/ Oct) date had been fixed. Besides, India is keen that an arrangement be worked out where it retains an advantage over its peers in case the tariffs are declared illegal by American courts.
