Deadly intersection on Hwy. 101 is closing as work on bridge moves ahead
A project to enhance safety at one of San Luis Obispo County's deadliest intersections is 'ahead of schedule,' and the currentcrossing will be closed for good on Monday as work to build a new bridge proceeds, Caltrans said in a news release.
The project to build an undercrossing beneath Highway 101 at Wellsona Road near Paso Robles — where six people were killed in car crashes between 2012 and 2016 and three within the past five years — will move into its next phase early.
On Monday, Caltrans will close the road median with a concrete barrier, permanently blocking traffic from crossing the highway, Caltrans District 5 Spokesman Jim Shivers told The Tribune.
No official detour will be routed as 'local travelers can typically find and choose their own route and we wish not to direct traffic to a specific location,' Shivers said.
In order to put the median barrier in place, alternating highway lanes will be closed in both directions in the area overnight on Sunday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday.
The Wellsona Safety Improvements project calls for building an 112-foot-long bridge on Highway 101 over the new undercrossing, just south of the existing intersection, eliminating the need for motorists to make left turns or drive straight across traffic on Highway 101.
A new road will connect the undercrossing with Wellsona Road on either side of Highway 101.
The $12.2 million project, which has been in the works for years and was postponed by multiple delays, is finally expected to be complete by 2026, the release said. The notoriously deadly intersection of Wellsona Road and Highway 101 near Paso Robles.

General Motors Company (GM) to Invest $888 Million in Tonawanda Propulsion Plant
General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) on Tuesday announced plans to invest $888 million in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant to support the production of the sixth generation of V-8 engines used in SUVs and full-size trucks. A group of technicians in a garage, inspecting car parts and ensuring safety compliance. This will mark the largest single investment made by the company in an engine plant and builds on the strategic investments made over the last 15 years, including the half-billion-dollar investment announcement for its Flint Engine plant in January 2023 for the production of the sixth generation of V-8 engines. The investment in the Tonawanda Propulsion plant will include new equipment, machinery, tools, and facility renovations. According to General Motors Company (NYSE:GM), the new engines are expected to be stronger than the current ones in use, benefit the fuel economy, and reduce carbon emissions. New York's governor, Kathy Hochul, says the project is likely to support 870 jobs at the plant, including several that were deemed at risk. The state intends to provide nearly $17 million in tax credits for the investment commitments. Having said that, the investment announcement is a shift from an earlier $300 million commitment from General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) to make EV drive units at the plant, which is being seen as yet another sign of automakers adapting to slower-than-anticipated demand for EVs. While we acknowledge the potential of GM as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. Construction on 15 Freeway offramp in Temecula to create mid-week traffic nightmare
A day-long construction project will create a traffic nightmare in Temecula this week as crews perform a core-drilling operation on a busy I-15 Freeway off-ramp. Though the work will only be conducted between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on the southbound ramp at Rancho California Road, heavy traffic is expected in the area, especially in the early morning as commuters make their daily trips to San Diego. California Department of Transportation crews will post signage to alert drivers of the upcoming maintenance work and to reduce their speeds in the work zone. Other Temecula ramps, namely Temecula Parkway and Winchester Road, will likely see an influx if their typically daily traffic as drivers avoid the closure.
